During the live stream of the Mezz classic ten ball final, we were lucky enough to have Johnny Archer and Stevie Moore commenting. Johnny poked some fun at himself for playing a little slow in the 14.1 finals and showed why he is a class act in the pool world. He also went on to mention that he has a Brunswick Gold Crown V in his home with 3 7/8 corner pockets. Practising on 3 7/8 pockets will slow anyone down, if they want to pocket balls. Those are some tiny holes .

Johnny was a hoot....and talking about how the women and ESPN did the men in.
 
I've enjoyed watching him play since I first saw him in a tournament at the Sands where he defeated Mike Defino in the finals.

He's one of my favorite players he doesn't play the popular "fast and lose" (Didn't misspell) style but he's normally never going to shoot the wrong shot (like a Nick Varner) so I learn watching him play.

As far as picking lint I have no opinion but he paid his entry fee so he might as well enjoy the entire course.
 
The men did themselves in by making no effort to be entertaining on television. A handful of men make an effort to add some color but the rest don't and they lose $$$ because of it.

Apparently the men and women (tour) were together at one point and negotiating for more TV money from ESPN. And holding out from signing a contract. According to JA, the women then struck a deal with ESPN, giving them their broadcast at no charge, leaving the men with nothing.

Everytime somebody complains about Johnny playing slow or picking lint I can only think to myself I wish I played that slow and made the HOf when I turned forty. The man is an amazing player and a pleasure to watch slow or fast. It seems many pool fans just watch to make fun of the players and it gets kinda boring after a while.

BTW - I know you weren't complaing I was just commenting on all the negative feedback I here about Johnny's game. Meanwhile he is virtually unbeatable on tight tight pockets.

Very well said! Johnny's style may not be made for TV, but it is made for winning. I'll admit, I like to watch someone who can quickly fly around the table effortlessly draining shot after shot (not JA's style). However, as a pool player you have to appreciate the results of JA's methodical, and error-free style.

Some of the greats are not very entertaining to watch. Actually, I would say most aren't. I like watching very aggressive 1P because you get to see some crazy attempts. A beautiful safety is appreciated by most AZers, but the rest are like watching paint dry.

We don't see nearly the quality or amount of great kick shots anymore because of the jump shot today. A jump shot is not as hard as a kick.

I was a pool fan and an amateur player when JA started. I have accu-stats videos of JA playing in his younger days and I got to see him play a lot also and he didn't play slow then and won most of his matches and tournaments. For some reason as he got older he slowed his game down a lot and from a spectators stand point watching slow play just isn't exciting. He wins a lot now, but it's not as entertaining to watch as when he was a younger usually ranked number 1 player winning most of his matches playing at a good pace. He was also voted the player of the decade in the 90's.

I have some of those accu-stats videos as well. Back then he was more of a rapid-fire shooter. Even though his pace has slowed, it's still pretty amazing to me that he has sustained such a high level of play for so many years.
 
Hey, whatever works. Johnny managed his career well, and it will culminate in October when he will be inducted into the hall of fame, a symbol of enduring excellence for all times. A young aspiring player would do well to choose Archer as his role model.

PS Using the implied logic of this thread, I think we must assume that Drago and Salvas practice on 6 inch pockets.

I completely agree. Mika reportedly was complaining after the match but Johnny ran 70+ at one point on that ridiculous triple shimmed gold crown. The previous high run on that table was around 30.

Mika also was complaining about Shane during the 10 ball finals.

I don't know why anybody would hold a 200 point 14.1 match on a table that tight, but nobody should expect a quick game from it. Straight pool isn't 9 ball, if you use tight equipment the game is going to take awhile.

Well said. In my opinion straight pool should not be played on equipment that tight. A soft double shim with simonis 860 is perfect.
