In a handicap tourney what strategies to use on a low ranked player?

Safe, and re-Safe. Keep in mind that you want to get the object ball and the 9 ball on different ends of the table. Use ball-in-hand to make a few balls and again put your opponent in difficult situations.

I wouldn't necessarily group the 9 with other balls, as we all know it will end up lining dead into the corner.

I usually don't tie up balls in this situation either because this player is rated much lower because they can't run 7-9 balls. I manage the game until I either know that I can get out, or I can run many balls and have a lock up safe late in the game.

If you get in a tough shot late in the game, instead of going for the difficult shot (aka. the sell out), try and duck, give them a tough bank, etc.

I agree with this 100%. Johnnyt

Is there a handicap where someone only needs one game in a race to 4? That sounds tough.

Played in sad tourny, KK9 should have mentioned that his opponent was a girl, he may have missled the forum by saying "What would you do say if he did so in so?" Just wanted to clear the air. ;)

In Miami, all the weekly run tournaments are handicapped. Its mostly ball weight with the better players giving up as much as the 5 out and 2 games racing to 6. I have found that the mindset you have to have when you play these types of situations where your giving out monster ball or game weight is that you have to CONTROL the table. Others have alluded to not scratching and trying to three foul but it really comes down to you trying to dictate what kind of shot the incoming player has.

I have to disagree with Cocobolo cowboy above. You dont want to play like your playing a pro because in general, the better your competition, the more you sometimes need to take risks. When your opponent has to only go to one, you cannot take any risks and you need to play lock down, conservative pool. Control the break, sacrifice runouts in favor of safeties, dont give them any air.

Handicapping

I don't play in handicapped tournaments. Too much sandbagging and favoritism going on.........and even if there isn't, it always seems like there is.

Play heads up with people your own speed or better....imo.

Don't worry, everyone knows Coocoo is the one getting the spot. (If he even plays pool)! He plays too loose, that's why he loses! LOL.

In Miami its this situation:
Monday night: Handicapped 9ball
Tues night: Handicapped 8ball
Wed night: handicapped 9ball
thurs night: Handicapped 8ball
fri night: no tournies
sat night: no tournies
sunday night: Handicapped 9ball

In South Florida, we have to wait for the maybe 1x a month events like Southeast/viking/KFcues/oneday9balltour, or you have to travel 2-5 hrs to get to a non handicapped event. If you want to get out during the week and play in a tournament, you either play ball with them with their rules or you sit on the sidelines and hope to match up.

As an experienced tournament golfer, I quickly got to that same place Ray. But I think it's far easier to sandbag in golf tourneys. In pool, perhaps I will get there as well. I guess I gotta learn that for myself (hard head!)

It's a whole different game strategy-wise when you give or get games on the wire to a lesser skilled opponent.

As it is a different game when you give or get ball weight.

It's great that people on AZ can learn quicker rather than later.

WHO is the girl?? I AM taking notes:thumbup:

A lot of the opinions expressed here are fine but IMO every situation is different and you need to analyze it and do whatever it is to insure that you get back up to the table.

Many times you'll find yourself doing something new and abstract. That's the beauty of this game, getting creative, it's like playing an intriguing game of chess. Aside from missing a routine ball and giving up a shot most of the times you have many options. When you think you've seen all of the options there's usually at least one more.
