Best bar box player

I would think that players and sweaters on AZ that have been around awhile have saw a lot of 2nd and 3rd tier players in the zone running rack after rack for a few hours or a night. But to do it over time against the best of the best at the drop of a hat and give them the nuts for big money takes talent only a few ever had or have. That's what sets the McCready's. Hall's, SVB's apart from the rest. A champion is not a one night stand. Johnnyt

When Glenn made it to all the finals in Reno this year, boy was I pleasantly surprised!!!! I think he was too!!!
I have had many conversations with him regarding his performance in Reno.
He has never thought for a second that just because he won 1st overall, he is the best in the world.
I honestly think he is just darn proud to be considered in the elite group of players who he admires and respects so much.
In short, Glenn had a VERY GOOD week!!!!:)

Quote from Mr Atwell, "Hey if a 51 yr old:D can keep up with the younger players once in awhile, then thats an accomplishment I feel good about"

I have been watching Glenn compete for many years. All his hard work paid off this time. He may never do it again, and he is very realistic about that fact.

I have known "Mr. Atwell" for 25 years. He was an unknown monster before the Reno Open. Everybody knows who he is now. Glen had a great week in Reno but he can't beat SVB in a long race.

Keith McCready on a barbox playing rollout was unbeatable when he hit his high gear. When everything was right he would run over anybody. He could give anybody (including SVB) the 8 ball and win. Keith could run sets out and his opponent wouldn't even shoot. Its unbelievable how well he could play. The players of today can't understand how good he was. He ran more 10+ packs than most have ran 5+ packs. He was the best barbox player every IMO.

Very well said Johnny.:)

From this players perspective, and being Glenns friend and watching him work very hard on his game, I should also add I dont think he is done yet.
I will predict he might have a couple more big wins in the near future.
IMO, old man Glenn is not a one night stand. Shoot, he has been around since the caveman days.:D (Glenn mentions quite frequently how old he is getting )

Hi Bob,:)

Yes, I agree. Glenn would not be the favorite in a long race with SVB.

I did not come from the time when the talented Mr McCready was in his prime. Have heard many stories about how great he was.(and still is,IMO)
You are probably very accurate. The players of today can't understand how well he played back then. Acutally, Glenn has mentioned that fact on a few occasions.

Ok, i'm tired of hearing Glenn can't win in a long race. Let me point out one fact.

In Reno Glenn played the longest race of anyone there. Player after player came up and he just kept knocking them down. He played more games then anyone, and he won more games then anyone, and the heat was one EVERY MATCH. Period!

Now, will he be favorite to win against SVB? Maybe, maybe not, does Glenn have the cash to play 5k sets? Probably not, but if someone backed him he'd play anyone. Her in little Portland there is not big backer action.

Also, I don't care what Glenn did 2, 4, or 10 years ago. Right now Glenn is playing the best pool of his life. He has won every big tournament here in the NW no matter what table size. And on a bar box he is near the top of the list.

I'm not trying to say Glenn is the best, but if he had the $$ to play these challenge matches he'd be there. And Glenn can play in the heat.

Nice Post.:)
Yes, Glenn is playing the best pool of his life. I 100% agree!!!!!
If he did get in a big $$$ match with a player like SVB, I certainly wouldnt count him out. I just think Shane would be the favorite in a long race.
Ironically, I just had this same conversation with Glenn. He is very realistic about the odds in a long race.
But from those of us who know him, he is a grinder!!!!
The give up in his game is hard to find.
When he goes on auto-pilot he is hard to beat, just like the other elite barbox players.
There are probably 10 players in that category. Isnt it cool that one of our own is in that elite group. What do ya know, from the little ol' Pacific Northwest.:D

Had to throw this one in.

I have to throw this guy in also as 1 if the best bar box players of all time, even though noone likes him his talent on the barbox was undenied, and at 1 time he has beat all these guys you have mentioned.
Jack Hines (coulda been one of the all time greats) Just a rotten piece of work.

I am not saying that SVB is the best bar table player in the world, but if anyone thinks that they are I will stake Shane against them in 8 ball or 10 ball.

Ok I am saying that SVB is the best bar table player in the world! :)

I will be at Derby and will be willing to bet up to 20K on Shane in a long race or an ahead set.

Thought I heard a little story that Gene Albrecht beat said Dave Matlock pretty good last time they played.

Also knocked out Frost, Mitch Ellerman, Gus Briseno, etc. in Phoenix.

Won the Masters ACS this year in 9-ball, 2nd place in 8-ball Masters.

Gene may beat Dave in some small tournaments when he was living around here but for the money I never heard of him playing Dave. Heck, I've beat Dave in some small tournaments and Gene too but when Dave wants to play it's still an awesome sight. I've watched Dave hit such a high gear it's scary. Every once in awhile, a glimpse of it comes out. His game is so powerful when he is on. During the last big bar table ring game last year at Shooters, it was starting to come out.

SVB is awesome and consistent and would be big favorite now but watching when Dave hits a gear is something special (and I think that I still like Dave's gear vs. SVB and I watched the SVB and Frost match). He still has a very strong gear, it just doesn't come out very often. Don't get me wrong, Gene is a strong player but he isn't beating Dave in the long run, imo....

In our little weekly tourn. here, Jason has to go to 6, and I have to go to 4 against him. The last 3 times we played I beat him 4-3. Two weeks ago I beat him twice for the win. Put him in the losers, and then beat him in the finals.

Well, you know how local word likes to spread. Last week, I was practicing before the tourn., and he comes up to me and asks me if he can practice with me. He never does that. I look at him, and he has a small smile, and that look in his eye. I say sure, but I know what is going down.

I don't know for sure, but I strongly suspect word got back to him about me beating him lately, and he wasn't going to put up with it. This was time to 'put me in my place'. I know that the tourn. wins don't mean anything, and he knew it too. But he wanted his 'pecking order' back. He got it. He beat me 10 ahead in about 30 min. The guy can play a 'little'.

After the first 5 racks, I started 'putting the rack' on him, just so I could practice a little too. It didn't help.

I know Glenn has played him a few times in the last couple years. And if my memory serves me correctly, Jason beat him in the 9ball singels at the Valley Nationals this year!!!!! Very strong indeed!!!!
And I believe he won the Grand Masters division at the BCAPL Nationals in 2008!!!

Hey Neil, if you need some pointers on the rack, pm me. :D

All those names getting thrown around...

and Daz only gets one little tiny mention?

Just putting it out there..... not one to overlook.

Oh I was thinking gambling, but if you're talking tournament since I been in the Midwest Jamie Barracks and Chip Compton might not have missed on the bar box in a year.

I watched Jamie play for an hour and a half without missing a shot on a big table.. shot after shot... I thought.. "I'm watching a future world champion".

SVB Should Play Archer

Match Shane VanBoening up with Bowman or Atwell or anyone else you can think of in a race to 100 on a bar box and let me know how much you want to bet. Shane is clearly the best bar box player in the world and is willing to play anyone out there in 8, 9, or 10 ball to prove it.

Jesse Bowman doesn't come to the Bar Box Championships in Reno or go anywhere else. Glenn had an awesome week in Reno last February, but it takes more than a good week to be called the best bar box player in the world.

I don't think either of these guys would put their money up against SVB in a race to 100 on the bar box.

You should stake him against Johnny Archer and see if you like it. Johnny is a very good bar table player and I dont see SVB asking him to play. Johnny has offered to play him those nice long sets to 100. Also, Johnny has been playing at this high level for about 15 yrs. See if Shane would like to go to Georgia
