One of if not the BEST post ever

I guess it made me think about my mom and recently passed
grandmother and how much they believed in me and what I do
(not pool) but those of us with good mom's are truely blessed
Nice post Grey Ghost....

Regarding Gabe....

When Gabe started to get serious at about 16 yrs old, he was broker than broke! He would just hang out at pool hall and either practice or play for $1.00 or 2 a game. Would enter local tournaments to pick up a few bucks. When I could, I would give him $50 - $100 to go play Jr. Brown in Wichita.....(did that very often, actually)...and told him he would lose it, but just play Jr. and learn!

He had no car, I had to transport him quite often to Shooters in Wichita, and pick him up late at night, or he would cab it. Once there was a tournament out of town, about 150 miles away, but he really felt he could win it. A big snowstorm came through, but we went. I stayed in hotel while he played. But he took FIRST place! Won the cash & the cue stick prizes. He actually had to play some of the most feared players in the state in that tournament.

A few months later he won his first big match & placed well in a tournament in Vegas at 17 yrs old, (we had to take him because he was underage in the Casino)....and with those winnings, he bought his first car (on his own), moved to Tulsa, rented first apartment.

There he met up with JJ and things slowly began to look up even more. It's now been 15 yrs of playing. He owns a couple of homes now and does fairly well, considering all of the other great players he has to battle.

So it can be done with very little, and I mean very little money to start....because that was the road Gabe had to take. (But i was also praying alot too!)

I wish robleyF7 the very best in his endeavor!

Sorry to hear of your grandmother's passing. Your short post sends a very big message my friend. Your doing so on a post of a mother that sets a prime example of what you speak is very fitting. Hats off to yea!

I love this post. Matt90 is so right when he said : .... "those of us with good mom's are truely blessed." Gabe, if you are reading this, you are truly blessed indeed! (You're Mom is an angel, but you're a monster! )

Robleyf7: I really enjoyed our time last night at that French site with you me and sde. The one thing you aren't is a "nit" and that's for certain.

Some good advice here from some solid folks that know of what they speak and I am sure there is more to come. Steve (sde) had some solid stuff in the chat as well. Take it to heart and we'll be happily seeing you on a stream someday (soon I hope) taking the cash. I do look forward to that day!

Bob <Loves watching Mom sweat in the chat -- she's a hoot!>

PS: Gabesmom: Tried to rep yea on your wonderful post; but, it seems I gotta pass it on some more -- dad nabbit anyway!

There's a Derek Fontenot that's played in the big Mobile barbox tourny a couple of times. I believe he's out of Louisiana, also. He plays pretty sporty.

Any relation?

good luck kid

couple of questions:

if you don't practice, how do you expect to improve?
you "play" to see where you need to improve, then go practice your weak points.
How do you expect to improve if you don't practice?

you say you play with a crapy sneaky pete--
do you know any local cue makers?
do you have the dimensions of the cue you want?
you looking for a mass produced cue or a custom cue?

you said you had a handicap, does it limit your play or your ability to stay on you feet for the HOURS of long sets or sessions?

you listed several regional (local) players, did ya beat them in a 2 out of 3 on bar boxes or 9 ahead (not race to 9) on a pro-tour 9'?
there is a difference!
chris miller won out in vegas a little while back (APA singles), how do you match up with him?

being a road player is tough all the way around, do you want to play tourney or session pool? or both?

you don't say whether you play BCA, APA, ACS or some other local-league pool but they all have rankings, have you achieved the top level/top ranking possible? (not all achievements are about $)
also they all have finals, have you gotten to the finals
not @ the local level-@ the national level?

the game has a food chain, are you beating all the locals now?
after you beat ALL the locals, then there is the state level, then the regional level, THEN the national level.
ya take the local $ and then go to the next level.
the game has a way of telling you where you are at.

like i said at the beginning-good luck kid

ya sound like ya got some heart

good luck

I see only one way out for you. Make the commitment to move and live in a pool meca. Los Angeles, New York, etc... You will not get anywhere living where your at. Find a cheap flat and be prepared to live there for at least a year. You will work somewhere for 8 hours a day, then play pool when you are not sleeping. You will play rotation, straightpool, and one pocket on tight 9 foot tables. You will gamble with all comers, for as cheap as they will play. You will watch and observe, and try and play, the local shortstops and pros.

I think I'm pretty good, but have been humbled gambling with Deuel, Frank, SVB, Mcminn, Joyner, etc.... The top pros are unbelievably good, you miss once and they might run out the set. I would never say that I don't have anything to learn. Pool is a continueing education. Speaking of which, I highly suggest you go to college or get your GED while you are in this city.

Ultimately, pool is really a pastime, even for the "professionals".

Good luck

I keep seeing where u keep saying that you never practice...If you really want to get better...there are no shortcuts.besides getting a instructor which will speed it up a lil...I've been around really goodto great players all my adult life..Guys that give Chris Miller the wild 7,8 and last 4...none of them..not even 1 of them got to that level without putting in the table time...a good benchnote to follow..2 years 8 hours a day everyday or once you've hit that millionth ball...not trying to be negative..I wish you all the success & hope you become a pro & rack up a bunch of titles...just my two cents..Good luck with your journey...Troy

i hear ya Troy an i agree 110% but i just don.t think its a waste of qaurters practicing on a bar box unless its free if i could get on a big table yea i would practice 8-12hours a day no problem i would eat chit an sleep pool lol but closest place that has 8-9foots is laf 1hour away an no car sucks for me :P

well hopefully something in your situation changes for you..we all can only play the cards that are delt to us 1 hand at a time..was just sharing with you from my experiences with players that have reached top levels at the sport..Good luck & take care...Troy

Well, I know I'll incurr the wrath of heck for this, but here goes the skeptic. Let me present my credentials. I'm a bona fide dropout from the 9th grade. My worst subjects were English and composition. I hated my English teacher and she hated me. When I turned in a paper she would give it a brief look then tear it in half and drop it in the waste basket saying, I can't read that. These were hand written you understand, in pencil, and I have poor handwriting. My point? Nobody could write and spell that badly accidently. It has to be deliberate.

But I'll tell you what I'll do. If you are real I'll send you a dictionary. If you will use it it, it will do you more good than all the pool practice you could possibly do.
