It couldn't be a moral thing as he did use ivory in cues, just not nearly as much as some other makers. It might be out of respect for the Japanese market but strangely enough (or not), most of Tad's big ivory pieces reside in Japan. I can't recall ever seeing an ivory jointed Tad, although I have seen a few with ivory points.
If anyone has a big Tad that they'd like to share pics of, I'd welcome a slight derailment of this thread.

PS Now that I think of it, junksecret had a "Martin Style" Tad and I can't remember if that flat-faced joint was ivory or not.
I don't believe anyone got a specific answer to why Tad Kohara doesn't use ivory other than the reason being because of export. I'm not surprised that the really big TAD cues reside in Japan when the popularity of TAD cues also resides primarily in Japan and Asia.

It was in the Michigan Union in about 1974. Dieckman had invited you to play in the Ann Arbor 9 Ball Tourney. You were "that 3 cushion guy from Detroit". Carl Conlon was a character in his own right, but it was you and Charlie Conlon (no relation) in the final (Charlie had beat me in the semis). Charlie was a hustler type with a a Palmer window cue and one of those Filipino up and down strokes (before we knew and feared the Filipinos). Anyway, dead of Winter in Michigan and you and Charlie in the finals. Charlie decides that his shark move was to claim he was hot and begin to open the windows near the table in order to either freeze you out or rattle you into a confrontation about it. The room was freezing cold. Charlie won. In that area of the Country there were 2 "Baby Faces", Al "Baby Face" Whitlow and Charlie "Baby Face" Conlon. Charlie had hung up his cue at that time and was selling insurance and playing cards, but completely out of stroke he still was good enough to beat all of us (although with you he resorted to a move with those windows).
A lot of cue stuff in that room that day. There was Carl Conlon with his beautiful Helmstetter 3 cushion "wood to wood" straight taper cues that were to revolutionize that game (before Helmstetter decided to change the face of golf and design the Big Bertha) that Carl was introducing to America out of Japan. Kobiyashi and Yoshihara were both using them and were just about to turn the 3-C upside down in the World's Championship by going 1-2 with unheard of inning averages. There was Dieckman, now a renowned cue maker and teacher of many. And there was Steve Titus. Titus invented the cue test machine, "Iron Willie" and became one of the 2 original founders of Predator. And of course there was me, now the world famous eBay (sometimes) cue guy.
I would guess that you and I were in the same room maybe 50 times without knowing each other all those years ago. I used to go to Ray Abrahm's Cushion and Cue to see all the 3-cushion stuff and play some straight pool and traveled up there plenty so a friend of mine could play Palmer Byrd (remember her ? - there's another Palmer window cue). I also spent loads of time in what was then the Capitol Cue Club, later to be known as The Rack. Cornbread referred to me as "College Boy".

Dennis Dieckman PM'd me to tell me the difference between the two Conlon/Conlins. They were worlds apart :wink:. That night I took my younger brother to his first concert, we saw David Bowie at Cobo - it was a fantastic day and night! I even defrosted after the 2nd song
.I certainly remember Palmer Byrd, is she still around that you know of? I remember she wanted someone to practice straight pool with and asked me to play a game to 50. I mostly played 3-cushion and she has never seen me play straight pool, which I rarely did. Well, I beat her like 50-18 and she started crying. I felt horrible and asked her what was wrong - she said she was a professional pool player (straight pool all the time then) and she got beat by someone who rarely plays pool. We were always pool room friends adn I felt bad and always regretted making her feel that way.
Who did you know of the billiard palyer? I'm sure I knew them all.

I saw lots of concerts at Cobo but not Bowie.
That's a funny story about Palmer, she was a sponsored player at Brunswick at the time and booked exhibitions and really wasn't subject to string together 2 racks. The talent pool in womens' pool is certainly much deeper nowadays.
I've been in the Los Angeles area since the late 70s. I split to the Coast to get my head together, man.
