Odds On A Break And Run.

I was talking with my buddy and says he probably break and runs a 9-ball rack about 4 out of 10

Do any pros shoot 50% or better?

average run out ratio for worlds top pros from the break in 8 and 9 ball is +/-30%

This statistic may be out of context, as it's likely generated from tournament play. If pros were to play 100% pure offense, the breakout percentage would be drastically higher.

Your buddy is super good then, because that would be playing great, considering how unperdictable the break is. Not to mention if he runs out that good, he must run out his opponents dry breaks a lot aswell.

well hes pro material, hes gotten to the 14 ball ghost now.

Playing the ghost with ball in hand is a completely different thing than running out where the cueball lies. Not to mention 4 times out of 10.

What's his name? I live in Ontario aswell. I might know him, does he ever come down to the Canadians or 404 Tour?

nathandumoulin...I disagree that it would be drastically higher. The best pros on Earth (including Mika) do not make a ball on the break much better than half the time, overall. They go through periods where one table breaks better on a given day, but overall nobody makes balls on the break all the time. 30-40% is a pretty fair estimate, imo.

You don't think pure offense on a dry table with a soft break would generate more break and runs? You could be right (and probably are), but I'd be willing willing to bet otherwise.

PS. You mentioned 40%. That's a full 33% more than Greyghost mentioned, which I think constitutes being 'drastically higher'.

Ah yes I know Andy, hes a good guy. I've played him in the 404 before. He can beat the 14 ball ghost? Thats impressive.

hes working on the 14 ball ghost, he just did the 13 ball ghost, it seems to be his new mission to beat th 15

As research for his 2001 book "Play Your Best Nine Ball," Phil Capelle studied 500 games by top pros. The break-and-run percentage was 28% overall. Capelle said Strickland was at 33% and Archer at 32% in that study.

[So it looks like greyghost's answer is right on!]

thats sweet man, thx alot guys

I am assuming he is playing on a 9' table without bucket pockets. He would also have to ramdomly rack the balls.

30% Break and run is very good even at the Pro level. I think alot of people would go broke betting your friend can't average a 40% Break and Run. The main reason is he can't make a ball on the break more than 65% - 75% of the time. He also has to have a good shot on the first ball. Then you have balls that will get tied up every now and then. Add this all togeter makes it very hard to Break & Run 40% of the time.

I dont know Andy really well and Id like to go on the record to say I cant make 2 balls in a row with ball in hand but Im calling bullshit on this one.

I have been looking, but can't find it....

Accu-Stats had a listing of interesting pool statistics and the odds of a break and run by a pro was something in the range of 1 out of 9 racks. (or 1 out of 7?)

This was compiled from the extensive Accu-Stats library.

9 ball on break is 1 in 33 racks.

If I can find the page that carried this info, I will add it to this post.
