Identify the Gold Crown

My bet is they left off the "V". Doubtful someone would own it and not know what they have. Looks like a IV to me

It's a GC4

I feel silly posting this after RKC answered, but it is a "4" (I own one so I'm familiar with what they look like). The flush mounted pockets make it either a 4 or a 5 and the castings/trim are those of a GCIV (the castings and trim on the 5 are different). So it is definitely a GC4, though without pictures of the frame to confirm, it could be a hybrid of some sorts, though this would be less likely.

The castings appear to have been gold plated. They don't look like the stock bronze/copper castings I'm used to seeing. RKC may know if the GC4 ever came with the gold plate shown in the picture straight from the factory. The stock bronze/copper castings were known to corrode or pit and a lot of people have had them plated or powder coated, me included.

That is the nickle plated option on the four.

That is a possibility except they really look gold-ish rather than nickel (silver)colored to me when looking at the picture. Same with the trim. And the castings look even more gold in color than the trim. Could be the lighting I suppose. A picture of the ball box might help determine which finish it is. When you go to check out the table you will find out or ask the seller. I don't know if there were corrosion/pitting issues with the nickel finish.

Anyway, if the price is right it is an excellent table. Be sure to have a mechanic that knows how to set these up. RKC devised a simple solution to reinforce the frame on the GC4 and this fix is recommended. I've seen GC4's that have the 5 frame, one of which was recently posted here. I'm only guessing that Brunswick made the modification to the 4's frame before actually coming out with the GC5, but I don't know this for sure.

Gold Crown IV

Thanks to all who responded. I saw the table this weekend and purchased it. It is truly a mint Gold Crown IV in black finish with chrome pocket castings and trim. Table has little play and has never been recovered.

I need a good mechanic in the Washington, DC metro area to set it up and perhaps pick it up and deliver it. Any recommendations? Chuck

Has this been discussed on the forum? I tried search but couldn't find.

Here is a thread that discusses the frame differences between the 4 and the 5, with pics and diagrams that illustrate it pretty well:

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=158966

Once you've read the above thread it becomes clear.

Here's the link to RKC's thread showing the fix to the GC4 frame to prevent slate sag at the table ends:

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=132657

It's really an easy fix, and highly recommended.

Hope this helps.

Check the "sticky" - Pool Table Mechanics Directory
there are several in your area.

DPP I thank you for the links. I tried search words: fixing, modifing, improving... but it was "just for your information", a bit tricky. I added those links also to the "Sticky: More Gc4 questions" thread so now they should be easier to find.

Gold Crown IV

I hope I'm as lucky as jconant44. I guess I'll find out shortly when the table is delivered and installed. I believe the table is a 2005; does anyone know when the GCIV frame was changed? Chuck

I guess that is still unclear. I'm not sure if the frame was changed on the GC4 and that same frame was then used on the GC5 or if that table from the other thread was somehow a hybrid of the 4 & 5.

No problem either way. Just make sure the mechanic cuts some angle irons and makes the mod to the frame if it is the "old" 4 frame, then you're good to go.

You are gonna love the table, they are sweeeet! Are you tightening the pockets?

I'm not planning to tighten the pockets. The rail rubber appears to be in great shape so I don't want to replace it which, I believe, is necessary to extend the subrails. I don't like the way shimmed pockets play. Is it correct that the pockets can be tightened a little by adjusting the rail position? Chuck

not on the GC4

Pocket Tightening

Thanks, Donny. Can you elaborate? It the GC IV different than other GCs in that regard? Chuck
