Rules variations? and applied rules to High Run.

I finally broke my high run of 25 (while in a match against my friend Wednesday night 11/25) but then missed the easy shot on the 28th ball which would make my new high run 27 .... but .... not really!
I accidently touched a ball in the stack with the side of my cue while bridging over the stack and trying to shoot a draw shot, that happened at about ball # 8 in the run.

In 14.1 rules it is a foul to accidentally touch another ball... isn't it? ...

I was wondering if it is common to play the "cue ball fouls only" variation like we see in many of the pro 9 ball matches on TV.... or is it more strictly adhered to the rule as "foul on all balls" which we also see in many 9 ball matches on TV.

I want to be brutally honest with myself and since I fouled during that 27 ball run, that run is tainted and I continue to try to break my real high of 25 and do it without a reason to mar the accomplishment.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks.
Do you strictly adhere to the above rule (which ever it is) when pursuing your high run goal?

Tournament rules call for all ball fouls, but more common I believe is cue ball fouls only without a ref presiding over a match. Your run counts in my opinion!! :)

Ussualy it is cue ball fouls only, but that depends on the tourney/league. And since there was no ref or director pressent on the shot, typically the call would go to the shooter....

So yeah I agree, your run counts.

Maybe still tainted in Your mind, so go ahead and beat it real quick and don't let it linger in your mind

keep up the good shooting

It's all good either way. My friend was very cool about the run. We usually play cue ball only fouls so he felt the run should be good as well.

I like the suggestion to just go ahead and beat it real quick and not dwell on the blemish.

Thanks everyone for your comments too.

Good glad you agree, strike while the iron is hot !

A good positive attitude never hurt anyone.

Keep it up

In our two leagues, it is cue ball fouls only.

when John was commentating on his 245, he did something like that and said, Since we are not playing in Europe, it's ok.

Congrats on your high run.

If Marop didn't chicken out the other day, You probably would have doubled your high run on his buckets.

Good run buddy. If you are playing cue ball foul s only then it was a new high run. Keep stroking.

For what it's worth, my friend, half-fast Larry, and I play all fouls. Of course it's honor system, we call fouls on ourselves whether or not the other saw it. I believe that this has made us both more careful players and caused at least a slight improvement in our games.

lol so theres another difference between pool 'n snooker apparently?

Pool players foul and continue on knowing they have fouled.

Shoot the bastards I say they are no better than that argie scum with his hand of god . :p

Just play like Earl, only counts if the ref sees it!

Count it how you want to, its what you feel that matters most.

I think Selftaut has it right. If you look at the rules they say:

20. Cue ball fouls only

If there is no referee presiding over a match, it may be played using cue ball fouls only. That is, touching or moving any ball other than the cue ball would not be a foul unless it changes the outcome of the shot by either touching another ball or having any ball, including the cue ball, going through the area originally occupied by the moved ball. If this does not happen, then the opposing player must be given the option of either leaving the ball where it lies or replacing the ball as near as possible to its original position to the agreement of both players. If a player shoots without giving his opponent the option to replace, it will be a foul resulting in cue ball in hand for the opponent.

Unless you say to yourself "I'm playin all ball fouls this practice session." then it's cue ball fouls only. Saying that, if in your heart you feel it is your high run it is. But if this was important enough to question it, I see higher runs in your future.

Best of luck,
Andy
