What does it take to become a Champion?

And very often those "claims" are 100% correct. Hu has more credibility than most 100 posters on this board put together.

Jim

That may be, or not. I know, or have heard of, most great players in history and hu or hugh doesn't ring any bells. To me and probably most others, he's just another dude that likes the game....that is all.

Ever heard of Dick Daly? He spotted Jersey Red 15 points in Rotation.

Sammy Blumenthal. Beat pretty much every pro outside Chenier in snooker.

Just cuz you never heard of someone, doesn't mean they can't be a regional monster.

There's a LOT more talent out there than people realize.

Russ

Amen

There's a LOT more talent out there than people realize.

Just look at the World Championships. Well known world class players are losing matches to guys we've never heard of.

And how about the new Women's World Champion from China? I'd never heard of her.

Does anyone else see the incongruity of a short bus C-player posting 28 times in one thread on what it takes to become a champion?

I say that Russ deserves a medal of some sort, if only for coming out in a distant second place to Mr. 400, John Schmidt, who has 45 postings in this thread.

However, since this thread hasn't been closed yet, Russ might still persevere like the true champion that he is and snatch first place in the number of postings to this thread.

John is totally right on this. Some people are born with, or develop insane amounts of hand-eye coordination, that other people just don't have, and can never have.

It's the same thing as these Olympic runners that are the fastest people on earth. They were born with a gift, someone spotted that gift, and they developed it while they were young, and now they are the best in the world.

so if youre born with the gift of being able to play pool well and you just need to add practice and determination to the mix how many more effrens are there out there that we dont know about b/c they were never exposed to pool?

I definitely do not believe that just anyone can be a champion player or even a low level professional. I've seen too many people with no physical or mental disabilities put many hours of practice into their game for years and are never able to break out of the B or even C level. If they are infact capable of becoming a professional, then they must have to put 20'000 hours of practice in.

However I do think there are quite few out there with the neccessary attributes to become professionals who never realize their potential. Many of them are even lifetime B players.

A very important piece of the puzzle is the ability to dedicate time and focus to developing these skills. Most people just can not give up even a few hours a day to practice pool, guitar, golf, basketball etc. Many enjoy playing, but they would rather spend their time doing other things. Others just don't believe they are capable because society tells everyone that they are average until proven otherwise.

I remember one person that I was teaching who I thought had a wonderful aptitude for pool. He improved so fast with very little guidance and next to no practice. Someone asked me if he could be a pro, or even one of the top players in the city. I responded, "I doubt it, his idea of dedication is an hour of practice once every other week".

In my opinion it's not the physical gifts that are impressive about someone who performs very well. It's the amount of work that went into developing them.

john schmidt!?

In response to a previous post of yours suprisingly enough I myself have never even heard of you. I have heard of real known players such as Jimmy "Diamond" Reid, Efren "The Magician" Reyes, Jimmy "The Kid" Wetch, and many others in my time. If you are the great known player like you claim to be you would at the least have a just as well known nickname?? Even though you may play at a professional level you have with your posts that i have seen on this forum more than portrayed a type of player who is obviously looking for whatever action he can get 24/7. I hope it comes your way!

Are u being serious ?

I don't know if you just taking a shot at John by saying you never heard of him but I'm just gonna say that If ya never heard of him then you really don't know much about pool Period...not trying to flame you but...come on...this post is ridiculous..You might not agree with J S but he has paid his dues.

I do not understand what you mean by me not "knowing much about pool Period" Are you refering to me not knowing how to play the game itself or are you saying that I do not know much about the player culture? I agree that i do not know much about the professional players who are active at this time but I believe that my post was necessary in all regards. I still dont get why you say i am taking a shot at John by saying i have never heard of him. How is that in any way shape or form disrespectful to John?

Well you say u never heard of him then say if u are a great player like u think u are..that's a knock...John has many titles including a U S Open & has gambled against some of the best players in the world...So my saying if you never heard of John then you are really out the know is all i'm saying.

if you read my post carefully i never said John Schmidt wasnt a great player in regards to his skill. What i had posted was that he may not be a "greatly known player" in regards to his reputation and or prestiege. I have found this to be true for myself after reading a number of his exceedingly arrogant posts. Even though John is obviously a professionally skilled player i am sure not everyone likes his attitude on this forum.

You win a U.S open and your a CHAMPION ....period....the end.

He has more right posting on this particular thread then any of us. I don't know him as a person but as a pool player, he commands the respect of your attention. Sorry.

Please do tell me....

ill tell you what .

I replyed to your pm befor i read more of this thread so go ahead and tell me at what point did i claim to be a master.

Like I stated in the pm i thouhgt i made it clear i didnt agree with either point. If you were upset about the little boy comment i can understand, but it was really bugging me reading post after post about how great you are. And when you bring baseball into it I call bullsh*t. There are alot of kids that made the allstar team but very very very few who have the skills to play in the bigs, period.

Where ever you are, whatever your doing you take care little man.

P.S. I hope you were'nt also including me in the group that just wants to be you. I care way more about the look of my customers yards than I ever will about pool, and get more enjoyment watching my kids learn somthing new then you will ever get stroking your ego

respect of attention

In my book than according to ShootingRazbone winning the US Open or any other major event would make any player a champion. That is what is said to take to become a champion.

I need to...

Apologise (might not be the right word) for falling into the Az trap. I clicked on this thread thinking ( again ) i was going to be able to steal some little peace of insight, just to again find myself reading page after page of he said she said and like so many and so many times read somthings and took them as a absolute.

The truth (in my book) "What it takes to be a champion", its for most alittle of both of the 2 mian points. The heart of somone who thinks they can do anything and god given skill. That with hours of practice can be turned into a fine running machine.

Can anybody be a champion at anything NO, there are all kinds of physical limitations that prevent that. A 4ft 6in guy will never be a NFL quarterback knowmatter how big his heart or lazyboy...

Can sombody become good at somthing faster than sombody else, of course, are they going to be a champion without practice, NO.

Is John the most talented person ever born, Im kidding I know I said apology.

Mr. Schmit, I see you replyed to my reply to your pm, I have not looked at it and wont for a day or so I wanted to put this out there first.
The only reason I give you a hard time about your size is because of the thread you were in, way back fighting with that other pro player. Somewhere in there you both were talking about beating each other up and your both hardly bigger than a toad stool.

I dont come on here and read every thread in fact I dont come on here even everyday. The times I have been on here rading threads your in, sometimes you come accross as well alittle snobish. It is hard to tell when you cant hear a persons voice or see thier expressions, thats just how it reads.

If you chose to leave well thats your choice, I dont really see anybody pushing you out it takes two to argue and your at no loss to jump right in.You could, like many others make your point and leave it at that.

Well thats that, you take care and dont worry we all know, knowmatter what you chose to do you'll be the best at it. LOL Im kidding I just had to say it.
