got sharked? - double coin flip

been seeing a lot of sharking posts lately and it reminded me of one i had a while back.

playing a simple little local tourney, first round. i won the flip but when the match went hill/hill, as i waited for him to rack the final game, he walked up w/ a coin in his hand and asked me to call it. i was totally confused and said i already won the flip. he just said the rules were if a match goes hill/hill you have to reflip. he then flipped the coin in the air. i was so off guard i quickly called heads. turns out i called it right the second time, but i was so pissed about the whole situation i totally dogged the game. i even lost my next match in part because i just couldn't calm myself down.

so has anyone ever played this rule before? i was just like, ok, if the coin flip doesn't matter until hill/hill then i declare that i'll just start the match out breaking every time. for the record it was alternate break, 8 ball, race to 4 or something.

also, love reading everyone's great posts around here. keep shootin.
 
Bullchit.......rack or forfeit......only 2 options I would give him......or was he the tourny director?
 
oh yeah, he played on a team w/ the director. which is why i decided against going and talking to him. besides, i had won the flip, so figured screw it, relax, and get this over with. and then failed miserably ;) ah well

The very least they could have done ....would have been to provide a jar of vaseline.
 
Would be pointless anyhow. The rack goes hill-hill and you are flipping a coin and letting luck decide who breaks anyhow? It is the exact same thing as just staying with the flip in the first place.

Coin flips are an idiotic way to decide who gets the extra break in a match anyhow, it should ALWAYS be a lag that decides the break in any match so that luck never becomes a factor in your loss. At least if you get beat on the hill to a break and run in a match with a lag you actually lost something because the guy shot the lag better then you did.

local tourny i play in uses that rule for hill hill.
 
Any tournament or room in the world can have all of the quirky rules they desire. As long as everyone plays by the same rules - who cares?

so if I go to a race to 9 and your up 8-3 and I come back and make it 8-8 I have to flip for the next break? WTF that is the stupidest crap I've ever heard...if its winner breaks then the winner breaks, if its alternate the you alternate...what a stupid rule.

I've never heard of that rule before, and I'd have probably gone to the TD while thinking my opponent was a move pulling dirtbag.

Jerschroe - did you ever ask if that was in fact a rule in place?
 
That is ridiculous. To me, the true advantage of winning the flip in an alternate break situation is that you will be breaking the final rack should it go hill hill. I could care less about who breaks the first rack, but the last one is a different story.
 
ok, so other people have at least heard of this stupid rule before. no i didn't ask about it. after 2 n out i left. but for anyone who flips at the hill, what do you do at the beginning of the match, flip? that's really my only issue. like intotherail says, who cares about the first game. as far as i'm concerned the flip (or lag or whatever) at the beginning of the match is deciding who breaks on the hill/hill game. in alternate break format that works back to the same person having the opening break. but that's only a byproduct to me

I would taken a seat and ask for td to come over ----that is not a sharking move ---that is a idiot test!!! you failed!!!!!!

While Tournaments and League are SUPPOSE to be a gentleman's sport, Sharking and Woofing have always been a part of pool. Not necessarily a good part.

I am Guilty of having my game thrown off by a simple Shark or uncalled for Woofing. It can effect my game the rest of the night. This has to do with your state of mind at the time. If you are completely with out stress then it is a lot easier to blow off the woofing and move on. I think your mental state has a lot to do with the quality of your game as well as how you handle Sharks and Woofers.
 
Playing 8 ball I think I'da double sharked him right back ..... I'd say, "go ahead, you break."

Odds of him running out on you are so slim, you're probably better off letting him get rid of some of his balls anyway. That would have been in his head the entire game.
 
If I recall correctly, the closest thing to this is a seldom used format that I've seen on TV. A two set, five game, match. Where if the match goes one set all, there is a lag to break the final, match winning, game.

Not a great format IMO.

One of our jobs as a player is to know all the rules for that tournament....SPF=randyg
 
A crafty old timer I know pulled something similair in a one pocket tourney we have locally. Most players at that hall play on the same table most of the time, so when they play in the one pocket tourney, they usually play on a table neither one practices on every week.

Instead of just playing on a neutral table, my friend gets a coin and says "We'll flip to see who picks the table". This gives him a chance to play on his favorite table that is the slowest table in the house, has some funny rolls, leans one way, and makes him (already the best player) an even better favorite to win.

He was cracking up telling me about - he knows he can torture almost everyone on that table.

Yes that is a great STRAGEY more than a Shark IMHO. I like to use that one in league play especially when I know a players Speed. To break and run 5 or 6 is the kiss of death. If I don't feel I can get out, I leave 3 object balls on the table until I can get out. By having 3 object balls on the table it is harder to safety me and I have balls to hide behind.
