Played Scott Lee yesterday

Would like to know the facts on Hopkins T.

To Scott Lee

You said that Denzy did not have his facts right on the Hopkins million Dollar T. I checked out as much as i could and I found out 2 of the 4
he was correct on that he stated.

1. Hopkins ran a Million Dollar T.
2. It cost $5,000 to play in it or qualify.
3. 12 players showed up so that was $12,000.

What I don't know or remember if he played in it or added any money like
Denzy stated, that he did not play in it or add any money. Would you fill in the facts?

Thank you in advance.

Pool-Jumky...Allen Hopkins has always wanted to promote a really big money tournament. A couple of years ago he decided to go ahead with his plan. The plan called for 200 players to pay a $5000 entry fee. That's where the million dollars was to come from, and why it was titled "The Million Dollar Shootout" (or something like that). Like almost all tournaments, it was specified that the million dollars was based on a full field. Allen and several others ran qualifier events across the country, where people could play in a qualifier for a chance to get into this event. Between the qualifiers and players who posted the $5K entry, there ended up being only 15 contestants, IIRC. This was a first year, first try effort. No, Allen did not add money to the event, but he did put up the venue (Valley Forge Convention Center), and did pay for the table setup (which was NOT free). If I've made any errors here, someone (maybe Allen Jr.) will correct me. At least Hopkins made a tremendous effort to do something big, and has ALWAYS been a friend/supporter/warrior to the pro pool arena (and amateurs too)...and for anyone to suggest anything otherwise is not only incorrect, but downright blasphemus! Allen Hopkins has been around since the beginnings of men's pro pool (He was the first president of the first men's organization in the 70's...the PPPA). He is widely known to be honest, does what he says he will do, and is always a threat to win any event! Does that clear things up for you?

Its a shame that only 12 people played in the $1,000,000 shoot out, Schmits backers pulled up or it would have been 13, I dont blame them(not because of John but because it wasnt good odds on the $$$). The 12 players who did play wernt any suprise. It ended up being the $60,000 Shit-out, I'm not knocking it-I wanted to see Allens event work, but even then at the height of the economic boom its hard to get 200 people to post $5,000. The format was great as well. I hope he re-tools it and attempts it again down the road. The guys I talked to that played in it liked it alot, Allen runs good events. It was a matter of econimics. Had IPT worked then Allens event might have worked because there would have been more $$$ in pool overall. But thats not what happened, shame-props to Allen for trying!!!

I'm with you FATBOY, it's real hard to knock anything Hopkins does. I find Allen a true professional....SPF=randyg

I KNOW some people can get all cranked up about being both a great player and teacher.

IMO one has very little to to with the other. If Scott can diagnose, instruct, and teach you to become a better player, who cares if he can pocket a ball?

I know this is the point of many, too, but just wanted to reiterate this.

Oh, and BTW, Scott can play, too!

Very true!! You know, I spent aprox 8 hours with Scott lee. I do not think he pocketed one single ball! He must be a terrible player:rolleyes: I even have PROOF, because I got it all on dvd! ( Scott , don't try to deny it!) If you watch the dvd, you may miss it due to the fact that there is a ton of useful information that you could actually use to improve your game, but that is obviously of no importance.

As he has already said, his focus was on what he could do for me to become a better player, NOT on showing me he could play.

I surely would have benefitted much more if he spent a couple of hours playing pool and showing me how good he could play, right?

Now that you mention it, I got ripped off! Imagine the nerve of a guy spending ALL that time teaching me things that could elevate my game, instead of coming in and making it a point to prove to me that he is a great player, and just showing off and feeding his ego! What a racket he has!

Well, the word is out on you Scott! Be careful, this will surely hurt your trade and rep when I tell EVERYONE how you wasted all of my time with good solid intruction and NONE of it with showing me you are top player!

Instead of showing to me that he was qualified to teach by playing, he PROVED it to me by TEACHING!

I happen to find the statement about "those who can do, and those who can't - teach" very offensive and derogatory. I think it should end with " AND THOSE WHO CAN DO NEITHER CRITICIZE"

"Those who can do " also applies to teaching. Scott can and DOES teach! Not everyone can teach ( very few can teach at the highest level) and that includes the top PLAYERS! Doing something well, and teaching something well are 2 VERY different things. There is obviously some overlap, but the point is that teaching is its own skill.

You know what? I do not know how good scott lee plays. You want to know something else? I DO NOT CARE! I did not arrange to meet him as a player, I met him as a teacher. I was not disapointed.

JW,
Very excellent observation.

I think I knew Mark Wilson for around 4 years before I ever saw him hit more than a rare single ball. I've never seen Jerry Briesath hit a ball (despite being around him for probably 20 or 30 hours).

Imagine my surprise when I found an early Accu-Stats video (no commentary) of Mark thumping Buddy Hall and Earl Strickland in the late '80's - just dominated the matches (though they are obviously Hall of Famers, if you can stick with them in a single match to 13 you have SOME skill). I also found a video of the first Mosconi Cup in '94....who made the winning 9-ball? It was Mark (never mentioned it to me).

I attended one of the Legends of Pool events with Archer/Strickland. When Earl asked who some of my instructors were, I mentioned Jerry B. He noted that when he was young and on the road (losing very seldom) he matched up with Jerry at Jerry's poolhall in Madison; his comment was "Jerry ripped me a new a$$hole."

Anyway, I agree with your point that it doesn't matter to me if the instructor was the best player in the world; an interest and proficiency in TEACHING is the key. Far too few proficient players have developed such advanced teaching skills.

this coming from a self proclaimed dink....you and denzy deserve each other...since both of you play so well just come to either white diamonds or the tulsa one hole classic and lets put up a 1,000 on the light you both have action in any game you want...one hole, 9 ball, 10 ball, 8 ball, banks, straight pool. Put those big mouths where they belong and come get something sweet mutt & jeff

Grey Ghost

He already tried to play an expensive set with one of the most successful players from OK but your boy didn't want any part of it. Hmm I wonder who this Denzy is?????

No not Denzy, he wanted to play. In recent years, who from OK has enjoyed the most success?

I don't agree with what Denzy has written but he can play at the highest level.

Gabe Owens would be the pick, and then Shane McMinn....who is this Denzy? whats his name? I probably know who he is but not from an avatar

not to mention there are very few players that are not world class that those two are not going to get in the box with.....sounds fishy...lets hear a name.

I always get a good laugh when someone comes on here, won't identify themselves, and start woofing at everybody. If someone is that good, why hide behind a screen name? Come out of the closet and use a real name.

Steve

exactly who the hell shoots so good that Gabe or Shane ducked them? Thats pretty dam hard to believe. Neither one would duck Abood, amoungst many others...so i would like to know who is this that shoots above a Gary Abood level?

Right now I'm calling bullshit....if I'm wrong then I'll still put up 500 no questions asked.

If Denzy is reading and want's you to know who he is he'll share that information with you. Maybe Gabe remembers who he is!!! And as far as world class, I believe there's a possibility he'll be playing Ronnie Alcano at DCC.

well no one knows your boy in the south in N.O., I asked some OKC players and they said the same....so i'm still calling hogwash. Not to mention I just got off the phone with one of Gabes best friends (gabe is in whichata) and said thats bullshit. But if your boy is game to go get some gabe or mcmin for that matter, I was told to get 5k together and go get you some hommie. Come to the T-Town classic and i stick to my word and put up 500, if you can get through me then by all means go get gabe LMFAO

skeeterpro...Regardless of who denzy is, or how skilled a player he is, he shows no class by denigrating a true world champion, and lifelong supporter of the game...Allen Hopkins. If he has done nothing else (and he has), by creating the Super Billiards Expo, Allen has positively affected the lives of tens of thousands of poolplayers. That alone could have got him into the HOF...but he did it on his skill with a cue! Way to go Allen!
