What pool halls do you want to visit?

Sports fans usually want to visit certain stadiums. So, what pool halls do you want to visit? And, what pool halls have you visited that you will cherish?

I hope some of our more senior members contribute and tell us about some of those pool halls that no longer exist.

After reading a lot of posts I think one of these days I'll tak a vacation and go out to full splice and visit with Craig. His posts seem a little grumpy sometimes but I'll be he a pretty nice guy.. and I like cats..

Two that first come to mind are Amsterdam Billiards in NY and of course Fargo Billiards

Blue Suede Shoes in Mankato Minnesota.

I'll do my best to describe it for ya:

As you walked in the first thing you notice is the sweet smell of good pipe tobaco and cigars, both of which were sold in the well stocked smoke shop on your left as you entered the establishment.

On the right was an old dark brown ornate bar that ran the full length of the entrance. Very old and I'm guessing 30-40 feet long. Always a jolly soul behind the counter waiting to pour whatever your heart desired.

As you continued back to the billiards area you notice a very nice snooker table on your left just before stepping down into the main playing area. Here you would find 9 (or 12?) nine foot Peters tables spaciously layed out. Nothing fancy but built like brick sh*t houses and they always played true.

Sadly this place no longer exists and is SORELY missed. I have been in some pretty nice (old school) pool halls but none that topped this joint. Having it in my back yard was a true blessing.

Here's to the memories,
RG

I was in San Francisco this year in the break between the BCA and VNEA. I REALLY wanted to see Cochrane's.

It's gone.

That would be a major problem for me. Most of the pool halls I really want to go to require a time machine.

The Billiard Palace in Tulsa was an amazing place. I'm glad I had the opportunity to play there.

When I was a kid, I sometimes went to Erny's in Claremore, OK. Old hard word floors and turn of the centry pool tables. A game was only 15 cents. You yelled rack when you were finished and someone would come rack the next game and collect the 15 cents.

A young man named Rob opened a new pool hall in Pitsburg, KS a couple of years ago. This is an old time pool hall. He put it in an old building in the downtown area. There is about 16 or 17 Gold Crowns and a hand full of bar boxes. No food, but you can get a soda and candy bar (have to have a Baby Ruth in those long sessions). He did add a bar to help the cash flow.

I have to agree with you that visiting Craig's place seems like a great trip to make. I would really like to visit with Craig, someday.

Also, I'd really like to run back out to visit all my cousins in AZ and while I'm there, stop by Kolby's, where Fast Lenny streams from on Tuesday nights. I think I'd enjoy that.

And, last, but definitely not least, I'd like to visit Bank Shots in Jacksonville, FL, where my son will be playing pool, once in a while, now that he's home from his most recent deployment. I'd really like to play that boy a game of pool and see if the "Mom Factor" still rattles his game. (How many of you guys can beat your mom at pool? Or, do you seem to lose to her, even though you KNOW you can play better than she can?)

As for other pool halls, I don't really care for the newfangled looks and the bars. My favs are the older-looking family style pool halls. I love accidentally finding those, kind of like Sneaky Pete's on Poplar Springs Drive in northern Meridian, MS. Places like that are similar to my first experience with playing pool, so I really enjoy that atmosphere. I remember first playing pool at Snappy's Drive-In, in the western outskirts of the Dallas area. That was my first real experience playing pool. Every day I could, I'd walk a few miles to go play pool at Snappy's. There is just something about that atmosphere that you can't get out of your system!

Amsterdam Billiard NY. Some of my favorite players play out of there and from what I understand 14.1 is alive and well down there. I am envious of rooms in the US where you can find people to play games other than 9 ball or 8 ball.

Would love to play some Rotation in the Phillipines.

Anywhere in england where I can play against some tough competition on a snooker table.

pool hall that is no longer around...

i worked at a pool hall in the early 90s in houston that was called PLAYOFFS...this poll hall had alot of action and some great players...was really not fancy but setup for action...a few players that played there...jermey jones, jersey red, david g,barry and dennis strickland, rick vargas, tommy sanders, jimmy king, johnny morow, atlanta danny, nana, gabby, even john hager spent some time there and tons of road players that came through town including roger griffiths,cj willey and several philoinos and many i cant remeber....had 9fts on one side and 8s on the other side...had a big seating rail to split the hall that was elevated about 4foot with chairs setup to watch the matches and keep the least amount of traffic around the tables...i am sure there are alot of people one here that came through there doors...anyways great thread....mickey carroll

hey

The only room I ever really had to see was AMES. Its where the Hustler was filmed. I was about 15 and a bunch of us hiked into NYC, into Times Square and found our way upstairs into the famous AMES poolroom. It wasnt too many years later that it was torn down.

It was great just getting to be there once

That was a pool room , most pool rooms today are just glorified sports bars , and they function differently. There was no jukebox in that pool room during the movie.

I'd like that , only thing i would change would being able to get a beer.

In Chicago I remember a private room called The North Shore Billiards Club. You had to drop a few names to get past the doorman. First time I went there was a who's who of world champions and road players sitting on the walls sweating Louie Roberts giving the 7 ball to a guy from Detroit for $1K sessions. I think I even tripped over Mike Sigel, but it was late. I heard stories about it being raided by the cops from time to time, too. Anybody else been there?

I wish I lived near Hardtimes - Bellflower. Always big-time pool going on.

it is SO funny, as an acquaintance of mine once put it.... "you could turn hard times upside-down, shake it as hard as you can, and about 18 dollars would fall out"

of course there is an occasional bug money game, but mis-perceptions really are the rule here it seems.

Fargo Billiards. About a days drive for me.
I love the mountains, so one of these days I'll probably drop in on Jim B and I'd be inclined to stop in on the way and bug Craig for a day as well.
