I am curious if anyone in AZ land has ever heard of this book? It looks like a cool book but out of my league $$$. I found a description and a picture of the cover.
The Lions and the Lambs
by Thomas Fensch
First Edition, First Printing, Published by A. S. Barnes and Company, 1970
Loaded with pictures.
The legends and the facts about billiards through the 60’s.
A Lion, in the language of the players, means a gambler or hustler, one who can win when there is money on the table,…but not necessarily a tournament winner.
Lambs are the fun players who play to win tournaments but not necessarily money.
This book is loaded with pictures and stories of the players and characters typified in the famous Jackie Gleason/Paul Newman film The Hustler and the tournament and collegiate players who were famous in their own right.
Some of the people profiled or pictured in this book include:
Ronnie Allen, Tom Kollins, Don "The Cincinnati Kid" Willis, U.J. Puckett, Sonny Springer, Billy "Cornbread Red" Burge, Pete Margo, and Joe "The Meatman" Balsis.
Jack "Red Raider - Jersey Red" Breit Jimmy Caras, Irving "The Deacon" Crane, Richie Florence, Willie Hoppe, George Jansco, Luther Lassiter, Ed Kelly, Willie Mosconi, Cisero Murphy, Charles; Peterson Bill "Weenie Beenie" Staton, Eddy "The Knoxville Bear" Taylor, Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Wanderone, and Dallas West.
There are sections covering the World’s All-Around Pocket Billiards Tournament at Johnston City, Illinois, known as “The Hustler”.
The appendix has a list of eighty players, from Luther Lassiter to Pug Pearson, and how much they earned playing tournament straight pool, 9-ball and, one-pocket in 1967
