DCC Live Stream...

Does anyone have a clue if someone is going to have a live stream at the DCC and if so, who? We''d like to watch it. Hopefully, it will be a free stream. We've heard very conflicting reports on it, but nothing that makes it sound so great to us, so it's definitely not one we really want to pay to watch. But, we thought maybe if we see it once, we might be interested in going, sometime.

Anyone got a clue?

TAR will be streaming the action room

and

Accu-stats will be streaming the tournament

I'm sure both will be PPV, but there may be SOME free views.

All of the major streams are moving toward PPV, imo.

TAR does some free streaming every year and then some PPV. The PPV's are well worth the money. TAR does so much for the fans that can't be there at different tournaments around the country that a PPV to help them help us is something that everyone should be willing to do. Also ACU-STATS does some good PPV of the main tournament room, I bought the finals of the Bank Pool last year and it was very good quality.

This year has been tough on a lot of people... most people. People who can often afford almost anything they want can't afford to do half of what they normally do. We know a lot of people who have taken pay cuts of nearly half their paychecks or half their hours, because there are no other jobs available and it's better to keep a job at half the paycheck than to have no job. There are thousands of people who had jobs, but now have no job.

Yup. Great time to start charging everyone for the streams. I'm sure they'd all rather watch pool for a fee than feed their own families.

I think you guys believe I'm only okay with free streams. I think the more free streams there are out there, the more pool will get the response you are all whining about it not getting for so long.

Pool has come a long, long way in the past year. Much of it has to do with the free streams being available, so folks who really didn't think they cared to watch pool could watch for free and decide it's not so bad, after all.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with ppv, for the most part. Once in a while, I think it's probably a good idea. Like the end of a tour, for instance. That makes a good time for a ppv. But, keep some of the major stuff on free streams, so folks will be excited about it and will be glad to pay for a stream, once in a while. A lot of folks really can't afford to pay and if all the major events are ppv, you will run them all off and have a reason to whine, once more. But, if that's what you need... a reason to whine... please find another sport to trash. I'm really enjoying pool having so much more widespread attention and becoming more accepted, for once.

In the meantime, nobody has said much about DCC that sounds very exciting to us, so there's probably only one reason we'd pay to watch it and that's if we have a sponsored player there. Otherwise, since we have no real interest in the event, we certainly aren't going to pay to watch it. We can just save our money to sponsor a great free stream, instead.

There will be plenty of free weekly tournaments to watch.

Major Open Tournaments that have the top players competing for major cash prizes deserve a professional, well produced show.

That takes money.

Many vendors like OB Cues, Delta-13, Simonis and a select few fans can't continue to foot the bill for the productions.

If the viewers want to continue to have the major events broadcast it's gonna take ppv to make it happen. Maybe a monthly membership might work.

With the shows I have scheduled over the next 5 weeks, I will log over 4,000 miles and will have to stay in hotels 15-17 days.

I'm open for ideas to keep the major streams free to the viewers, but currently I'm not seeing it.

Thanks for being open to ideas. We enjoy your streams and prefer to have them remain free, as much as possible. You've got a good thing going. But, as you said, there may have to be another way to make it happen. To find new ideas, you have to make it clear that they are needed. You've done that, now. Let's see if we can find some solutions. A new thread would be good for that. I'll go start one in the live stream forum.

In the mean time, there is a very good chance that we will have a sponsored player at DCC, so we are seriously considering paying for the stream, if it's a ppv stream and he's there. We'd just rather the stream be free, so we have the option to watch if we want to and have time to. That's all.

The companies putting on these streams aren't Non-profit organizations!! They are businesses just like the rest. Should Krogers and Walmart stop charging for groceries because the economy is bad? There is almost no profit in streaming as it is, barely enough to pay for the trips, and sometimes not enough. As for Derby City, since I was the one running the stream from about 5AM to 3PM each day last year, I can tell you it was almost all free. I can't remember but I think there were only 2 or 3 PPV's last year when TAR was streaming (SVB vs Efren and SVB vs Busty are the only two I can think of right now). The stream went 24/7 for 8-9 days and maybe 5% of it was PPV. Lets not get too cheap here people!
 
This is just my opinion on streaming, plain and simple at the moment there is no real money in it because there is no money in pool. It is something that wont be changing in the near future.

I see TAR doing very god quality work and the price is reasonable also for all the hours of top notch pool you get. I have seen some great TAR matches and a couple I was bored with but you just do not know what is going to happen.

I have said from the beginning that I would always do free streaming and will continue to do it but was hoping sponsors would be more supportive of it but I know most are spread kind of thin in this economy.

IMO getting 10 sponsors behind someone like TAR would be awesome so the streams are always free but in this industry you have one company that will not work with another or rival products for example so it makes it tough. I am fortunate that my overhead has not been high since I mainly stay in one spot locally at my home room and have some decent players to showcase.

The biggest thing I have been lucky about is fan support, OTR is not a business and does not generate money as profit and might never but its been fun and with expenses, time and equipment I would say we are about even which is not too bad. I love the game and that is what makes me happy, for those who think there is money in this then you will see its not so.

TAR has been streaming for over 2 years now I think and with all the equipment and expenses I cannot see them making a big profit spread out among there crew, they would need to get more paying viewers or bigger sponsors perhaps outside the billiard industry.

OTR has been doing this for over a year and a half, its been fun, ups and downs. I have gotten an inside look in the industry, met some good people and some people I could care less for. My formula for OTR was to bring exposure to my local scene and help pool in my own way. I would stream for free to the fans, with sponsor and fan support I could do it and have. I am thankful for those who have helped and hope more people get on board with us to sponsor.

I stream 5 times a month, 60-65 streams a year. Someone asked me how do you make money in it, I said I do not make money, I love the game, sure it has some perks in it but you have to do it for the game and if something becomes of it then great. They asked cant you charge like $1 a viewer or something or a membership?, I said but what about the people who do not have Paypal or a means to pay?, I cant alienate them from enjoying a game I enjoy so much.

I am just rambling because I am bored on New Years Eve and really contemplating stuff for 2010 and OTR is one of them, I will continue on but changes will be made but the fans will always get it free. The sponsors out there need to wake up and invest in the game through streaming and giving people the itch to play because watching it online does give people the urge and also invest in our youth so we have more "growing" interest in the game because the die hards frankly are dying off.

People wonder why pool is so big in Asia, they invest in the youth and the kids start young playing pool and its treated like a sport. If we have a growing pool community the numbers will translate into outside sponsors saying we need to get involved because of the people playing the game. you and i both know how important it is for the fans to watch! and im a fan of your stuff and you know that! keep it up! we love the game and some say we are stupid for not making anu moneybut im rich with new friends like you and everybody else we meet streaming! thanks again lenny for your hard work!
 
Well gee times are tough so I think the Oil companies should give us gas free and the diner where I get my Sunday breakfast should definitely give a 50% discount because Id like to take all my unemployed friends there in this slack economy. But do you think the waiteress will take a 3% tip instead of the usual 15%? My nephew wanted to see the new Avatar movie too but he isnt naive to think that they would let him in for free.

Free streaming is great, done by those that love the game but pioneers like Pat Fleming and the guys at TAR need more than anything to get support to continue the fine quality work they are doing. Putting the pressure on them to do their work for free downgrades the concept of pool as a sport and industry.
You want free entertainment go to the park and toss a ball with your buddies. But this is a business. Not a non profit corporation like someone said.
