I have a problem with jumping up before my finish stroke, causing me to miss shots..any help with how to fix this problem? I know what some people are thinking..." just stay down" it's not that easy for me..lol. Thanks

The obvious answer, and what I believe is taught by many instructors, is to stay down in your stance until the shot is concluded with either a made ball or a miss.

One thing I was told a few years back was to take a string or rope. Tie loop in it and hang it low enough that you can step on it. As long as you keep your foot in place, you want jump up...

Try keeping your eyes focused on the target ball for 2 seconds before you deliver your shot. Then keep your eyes fixed on your aiming point. It will take some practice but you can make it a habit.

When your praticing, say FREEZE upon completion of your stroke. Actually say it. Try that, just a little verbal comment can really help to make something stick in your head....which will eventually become a natural habit over time.

You can pratice that at home with just the cue, drop into your stance and aim at something, pull the trigger, complete the stroke, tell yourself freeze.

let me know if it helps at all,

Good tip.

Do this and then visually look at your tip to see if it is on line with your shot,

Say freeze, CHECK your tip, then you are released to get up.

I had the same question just a few days ago. So I did a search. Suprisingly, there are quite a few results on this. I copied and pasted some of what i thought were the more valueable responses. I did not site who said each thing, so I apologize for that.

Tony Robles had a article on Billiard digest he said play some racks where you scatter 15 balls and you shoot any ball but if you move before everything (cue ball and object ball) stops moving you lost.

If your still jumping check to see if you feel balanced in your stance. If your off balance your making it hard on yourself.
-------------
You are focusing on the wrong thing. You are jumping up in anticipation on IF the ball will go in or not. Are you going to embarrass yourself, or look like you can play a little? In practice, it doesn't really matter if the ball goes in or not, there is no penalty.

Picture the ball going right down the line that it needs to go to pocket it. KNOW that it is going down that line. Don't guess. Then, you won't have to jump up in anticipation. You will know as soon as you hit it if you made it or not.

Focus on hitting the precise point you want to on the ob. Not whether or not you get to shoot again. If all your focus is on that spot, you won't be jumping up anymore.
--------------
to stay down more effectively you have to learn to stop watching where the balls go.. you should already know where they are going.. so keep your eyes focused on your aiming point .. even after the balls are gone.

don't be a spectator on your own shots
---------------
Don't move your head. It's not about saying down or jumping up, it's about not moving your head. Keep your head absolutely, perfectly still while stroking through the cueball keeping your eyes focused on the contact point of the object ball until contact. Simplify everything in your mind by just keeping your head still. Don't worry about staying down or jumping up, just keep your head perfectly still while shooting and you'll see an immediate difference.
----------------
Forget not jumping up-just concentrate on leaving your bridge hand on the table. You won’t jump up if your bridge hand stays put.
----------------
one of the hardest practice in pool, unconciously, we don't stay down long enough because we want to see what will happen to the balls after the shot.
i think we just have to keep it in mind and be concious of our execution, which is sometimes really hard to do.
----------------
If you simply focus on making a smooth, relaxed, well timed stroke through the cueball and hold the tip for a second or two in the follow through position, you will accomplish much, much more than just staying down. Just try this and you will see exactly what I mean. Make it a habit.

Stay down until the cue ball stops moving. If it is a stop shop then make sure the object goes into the pocket before getting up. This helps me if I am playing someone and I miss a ball that I do not think that I should have then I implement this.

Make a conscious effort to count: one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand 3, until your object ball drops.

Having a simple statement to yourself can be most helpful. Just remember the unconscious doesn't under a negative. In other words, don't tell yourself "Don't raise up" as it'll be interpreted as "raise up."

Go to PetsMart and get one of those shock collars for big dogs. Put the collar on. Get your friend, playing partner, significant other, or whoever you practice with to operate the remote control. Have them zap the livin' bejeezus out of you  every time you jump up prematurely. I bet that'll cure you in a hurry !!!

Obvious

My buddy George used to do that in golf. He would lift his head to soon on his drive. My other friend Todd cured him with a broken nine iron. Every time George lifted his head too soon Todd hit him on the head with the nine iron. In three or four holes he was cured.

I think I figured this out, at least for me. It begins with --

Why do you jump up, move your head or move your eyes?
Because I need to see where the cue ball goes.

Why do you need to see where the cue ball goes?

Because I am not sure it is going where I need it to be and then I will lose my turn.

I get concerned with losing my turn when the competition is tough. In other words, I am worried, anxious or plug in any other word that feels right.

Ever notice the only time you start jumping is when you are uptight?

OK then the solution is easy, maybe not the resolution but I know how to stop it.

I can’t do a damn thing about the cue ball after I hit it. All I can do is watch to see if I hit the OB with the CB to learn what I did or did not do right. For me the solution was to “see the hit” and to see if the hit was right. If I do that I can’t get up and watch the CB all I can do is live with the result.

Easier said than done. But when I know what is going on and why it is happening I can deal with it – so can you.

BTW when the other guy starts jumping up, I have him on the ropes and now I can calm down.

A great man once told me to make my tip touch the felt after every shot during practice....even with follow, touch the table at the end of your follow-through.....it simple, easy to practice, gives automatic feedback and it works....thanks Blackjack....

Good luck....sounds like a ton of good advice already....

I have helped people by doing this. Just a light touch on the back of the head with a shaft usually works.
However some people need the butt end of my break stick.

My instructor would place his cue above my head while I was down on my shots. After hitting my head a few times I got the idea. Usually people tend to jump up when they are uncomfortable with a particular shot usually a difficult one. Pretty similar to what Android wrote.

Practice the bottle drill a lot ... it teaches you to stay still throughout the entire length of your stroke.

Have someone hold a brick above your head until the ball goes in the pocket. You def won't jump up then.

On the other hand efren jumps up a lot! So if you consistently jump up the same way on certain shots and you always make them maybe its possible for some people that jumping up isn't always bad.
