What factors into your decision to shoot or duck? Are some patterns too tough to take on-ever?

Do you have 'rules' about odds of 'making' 2,3,4 shots or shape in a row to get out, that you follow?

What makes it a tough layout? What is a tough layout for you?

Is this layout tough? Do you run out or duck(where/how?)

Personally I do not mind this layout at all but I am very comfortable with banking balls. If not comfortable with banking, I'd thin the 7 and leave the CB between the 8 & 9. I much prefer not giving the other player that bank on the 7 ball and trying to get out myself. I figure I'm better than 50% at getting out from here as long as he 8 ball is not frozen.. YMMV
 
I wouldnt duck here. IMO there are three realistic ways to run out here, depending on the size of the pockets and how well you know the table.

1. Tight pockets and not so familiar with the speed of the table: Make the 7, slow roll the cue ball a few inches forward, position for banking the 8ball in center pocket with a low/medium speed, position for 9 should be automatic.

2. Tight pockets and very familiar with the table speed: Make the 7 with medium high left english, spin the cueball forward two rails, placing it between the 8 and the 9 - along the rail. (The filipinos love to play the 7 this way..)

3. Generous pockets: Make the 7, draw the cue ball via the long rail uptable to the short rail, let the spin take the cue ball to the opposite long rail. Shoot the combination 8-9

Hey B!

For me... I go for the runout. It looks like there's enough of an angle on th 7B to hit it with extreme left-english with enough speed to go 2 rails
between (or near the 8/9). Follow-through is real important here (imo). And the extreme L/E will create enough angle off the rails to get between
the 8/9.

Now if it the CB & 7 are straight, I play for the bank on the 8 in the side.

I like #1 here. Easy position and also a relatively easy bank on the eight. A 'B' player should get out here most of the time. You will occasionally miss this bank. It's inevitable. No bank shot is a hanger!
 
Draw back 2 inches on the SEVEN. Bank the EIGHT cross side with high right and speed. Usually straight in for the NINE.

i'll drop that bank 8 out of 10 times..less if there is a hot brunette around ..lol

there are a couple of high probability run out options. In order of popularity-

1) -make 7/,leave cb off rail for 'easy bank' on 8ball (straight/crossover/),pocket 9ball.-Most shoot this sequence. Especially the 1pocket/bank guys.

2) (see above) -make 7/,go forward 2 or 3 rails with high inside to get between the 8 and 9ball. Make the 8/make the 9.(you need to stroke this pretty good 7 to 8 it's pretty straight)

Part of the original question remains unanswered. What is a tough layout for YOU? What pattern(s) always have you thinking duck as the first option?

A lot of you guys hit em real strong.

What layout makes you stop and think your options more thoroughly? Shots you just don't like on the case ball(s)?

Any examples of shots you took on -that to do over again-you wouldn't?

NEVER do more than you have to! KISS. Keep it simple stupid! I don't want to run my cue ball around the table if it isn't necessary. There is one easy way to get out here for a decent player.
 
fwiw, i dont think many good players would intentionally set up or the bank on the 8.

the high left two rail position on the eight or the draw combo 8,9 are much easier outs.

I would play the 7 in corner,put the cb in 7balls spot leave myself 1/2 ball hit on the 8 with center english try to
go into the 9 or 3/4 hit on 8 ball with right hand english not to fast go 2 maybe 3 rails to get shape, put a fork in you ,your done.

I think if the safe is to hard to get im going for it..

I disagree with this. While a lot of players may opt out of the bank I think it is the best way to finish this game. The problem with taking the 8 in the corner is if you are not relatively straight the difficulty of that shot is about the same as the bank shot. So you need to get some good position going 1 or 2 rails. You can just slow roll the 7 in and take the bank.

You can tell me if I'm wrong but in my opinion the only shot here is to go 2 rails between the 8 and 9. Anything else is a gamble.

You're kidding, right? A decent player is going to get almost perfect on that 8 every time.
