Last night a guy asked me to do a butt cap, which is cracked and along with it, a maple ring is also cracked. It scared the heck out of me but some of the players are telling others about the work I did for them and I didn't want to get over my head too fast. I've done butt caps but just on my own cues.
Anyway, I turned a piece of maple and as you can see by the pics, your rings cutters are A 1 all the way. Thats slightly over half of the width of your cutter.

I agree. KJ's ring cutters are great.
I have done some maple rings as thin as 0.012 with them.:thumbup:
 
When using rings that thin, do you wipe a little CA on them to give em a little strength? Or no problem with them tearing apart when cutting the rings
and phenolic down to size?
 
Bump for KJ, He is the best of the best when it comes to service and a down right fine example of how someone should operate as a professional.
 
I'm really glad that you guys like this product.

In my job of building matching custom shafts for Seybert's, I need a ring-cutter that will cut-off a ring cleanly & precisely. I tried several different set-ups but they weren't giving me the results I was looking for. The key is the carbide saw. HSS can flex, carbide won't. There is so little 'second operation' work to be done after the ring is parted that it's almost non-existent.

I need to state that I didn't invent anything here. I merely searched-out parts that I knew would do the job and once machined to fit together correctly, became the tool that I was looking for.
Once I was convinced of this tool's effectiveness, I knew I had to share it. Again, I'm very pleased that you like it.

As evidenced by the previous posts, the closer you can get to DNP mounting and alignment, the thinner the ring you can part. .012" is pretty impressive. I got to .010" one day and started dancing.

No, I never even thought to try that.I have had a few tear apart, but not many.
I guess I have it set up really well. no warpage on the rings or anything.

p.s. can some tell me why I'm trying to cut through linen and hardwoods with a dremel when I could be using that set up like that, of course with my mid size cue smith I can't mount it quite like that thanks for sharing

you already know how much i like mine :wink:
i've been cutting black phenolic at .007"
wood rings , like you , about 10 to 12
i also use mine for cutting tenons for ferrules
then trimming the ferrules after glue sets
 
KJ, I had a chance to get my ring cutter set up today and Like they say, man it works great. Opens up a new would for experimenting. Thanks Again.

Brent,

If I recall, you had some of these thin rings in the "perfect hitting" purpleheart butterfly cue you practically gave away at the DCC. Do you have any pics of the rings that you could post?

i think these were .007 black
and 15-20 ish maple
not sure of exact numbers now that cue is gone

I have got some pretty good results with KJ's ring cutter. Still have a couple of things to work on but it is a great start. The ring in the picture was cut from a paduak round. If you hold it up to a light you can see thru it.

good bye dremel

got it yesterday squared everything up and I can do three to one with this set vs. my old one up with very little sanding let me now when you get more blades thanks,Bill
