When I went cue shopping, I went to a small local hall that sold mcdermott, joss and lucasi cues. I did a blind test. I had the owner hand me a cue and I hit a few balls with it. I didnt pay attention to how it looked, the make or the price. All I cared about was how it hit.
After a about an hour of testing about 10 cues, I narrowed my selection down to three cues that I liked, and repeated the process. I hit a few more balls with each until I found the cue that I just had to have.
When I saw the price tag of my Elite Sedona, which was $700 bucks, (about 300 more than i wanted to pay) the cue just hit soooo well and was just so beautiful that I just had to have it. I wouldnt trade it for the world.
I know thats out of your price range, but maybe do something like I did, but limit the cue selection to 200-300 bucks.
