Sharking-distraction

I saw a guy break and was running out the table. The guy that did not get a shot yet said on the second to last ball to his girlfriend, look, he makes this ball sinks the 8 ball next it is all over.
He somehow got it into the shooters head that after that ball to sink the 8. But he still had a 9 ball next to a 1.
And it was all over.He won without shooting a shot.
I think his girlfriend was in on it as well. Surprising nobody said anything. I myself did not see the 9 by the 1 either. But I was not the shooter.
As soon as he shot the 8 but before it went into the pocket,He calls, you still got the 9 ball.
A 1st for everything I guess. But in a race to 3 and it is 1 each, anything helps some people.

All sports have their method of sharking

Distraction of an opponent is actually taught in some sports. I admit ,I fall victim to it too often. I occasionally practice it. That's why pros have to sit still and quietly in the corner awaiting their chance at the table. But it is ultimately the shooters responsibility to be able to concentrate through it all. A good example of this is the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open. The best players can handle it. If you've never seen it you should Google it. If you got sharked , man-up and laugh at yourself. Don't whine about it.

Just a little crowd there

Yeah, just a little crowd there to watch, heckle, & cheer.

Another instance.....iPod

Just another instance why I like wearing my iPod when I play.

I got sharked recently while in a 9 Ball tournament match - by my mom who was 120 miles away!

I'm in my chair and noticed I had a missed call from my mother (my phone was on silent). Now understand, my mom is in her 90's. So I call in to my voice mail and it's from my mom who says "Honey, I had to go to the hospital - but I'm OK."

Immediately after this, the guy misses and I step up to the table with a dead 6-9 combo, which I proceed to drill no problem right into the corner pocket. Unfortunately for me the 5 ball was still on the table.

I thought your post was fine and clear already, but I tried to clean it up so others could get it, too.

I do agree it's total crap.

But while I understand that blaming and punishing the shooter justifies the non shooting, talking opponent's piss- poor behavior, ultimately as shooters we DO need to learn to be unsharkable. There are just way too many moves, and yet there's only one response (total clear focus) that will combat them all...

So my best friend is a silly, girlie, cheerful blonde lady. We're practicing one night, she breaks a game of 8ball wide open but dry. I get up and make a stripe. I walk over and aim at the next, and she's whining, "Awww. But I wanted to be stripes!" I ignore her, get down on the shot, and she reconsiders, just as I'm about to shoot: "Oh! Wait- No, I didn't!"

I admit I was thinking, "What? I didn't think I had any problems at all in the layout" just before I shot... and missed.

Well, now, I have never heard that one. It may or may not have even been intentional (her blonde act usually IS an act.) But it worked, and I shouldn't have been listening. Or laughing after she got me, either.

So again: There are just way too many moves, and yet there's only one response (total clear focus) that will combat them all.

Last week at league just as i was getting ready to shoot 8 ball the little strawberry blond from the other team starts making out caressing the kissing the large chested brunette next to her. I had no focus and lost the match rather quickly. Later it hit me that this was planned most likely. If you have to be distracted I guess thats the way to go lol

Here is an example of poetic justice in sharking.

In the finals of a race-to-one 8 ball tournament I had the first shot after the break. All of the balls were spread out but I had to bridge over a ball to make the first shot. In the middle of my stroke my opponent screamed foul and, flinching, I missed. I never touched a ball and my opponent knew that we were not playing fouls on all balls.

With a wide open table my opponent had an easy runout. He was finally left with two ducks. His last stripe, the ten ball, was hung in one corner pocket and the eight ball was hung in another. We play call all shots. My opponent called twelve ball in the corner and pocketed his remaining stripe, the ten ball. I called foul because he called the wrong ball. There was a huge argument but I prevailed.

I was left with seven solids and the eight. The whole time I was running out my opponent was screaming at me to miss. I did not miss.

I have to say...

that while to most it seems cheap and so weak...who really cares. If you are truly focused on the game at hand then you should not be "sharked" by such antics. Quite frankly, I welcome the chatter of an opponent or "railbird"...I actually will make comments back as I sink the balls to incite those who would "hate" on me. This actually will have a greater impact on their game. TRUST ME....

It won't work in every league or bar, but I pretty much jump on anyone who says anything about the game while I'm shooting. Even if it's "oh man he's out for sure". That's an old sharking CLASSIC.

Yes, you WILL get the reputation as "that guy". You're the dickhead who everyone thinks is too sensitive and flips out over nothing. You're that guy they all talk down about later... "he actually tried to get in my face when I was talking to my buddy 10 feet away. I told him it's a free country blah blah blah..."

...but it works. People shut up and let you shoot. Of course that's if it's a league with a decent portion of serious players and with mostly sober adults who are willing and able to show respect.
