What did she find?

My wife and I have an agreement. I don't complain that she is a regular at places like Good Will, Thrift Stores, Am Vets, flea markets and yard sales, and she doesn't complain about the fact that I sold all of our living room furnishings in a yard sale so that I could convert said living room into a pool room. (<-- this part was to brag on how cool my wife is.)

So yesterday at one of the above mentioned venues she purchased what appeared to her as a set of pool balls, complete 1 - 15 w/cue ball. When I inspected them, I noticed that they were between 1/8" & 1/16" dia. smaller than anything else in my room.

So what did she find? (I can provide photo's if needed.)

She may have found a very used set of pool balls .Contrary to many peoples thought, like a rock in a stream balls wear down after much use. Take an old well used ball and a new ball and put them by the rail with a torpedo level on top and see for yourself.

Don't be too hard on her, gdc. Her heart was in the right place.
My first wife went out looking for a new set of balls and ended up running off with the Fuller Brush Salesman. Or, was that my second wife?

I wasn't being hard on her at all and was thrilled about the effort. These things seem to be fairly new (I'll go out to the truck at lunch and get a pic or two). I was just wondering if smaller sets were manufactured and if so, why?

I don't think so. I believe fat Albert got it right but, I do recall that many years ago Sears, and maybe Monkey Wards sold el-cheapo pool tables that may have used a smaller than standard set of balls. Who knows?

Hey, hey, hey, Fat Albert!!! I would think if the balls (as the OP mentioned) were 1/8" smaller due to wear, then the numbers would be worn off of them. I seriously doubt that the numbers are 1/8" deep into the balls from the original surface. And...that's a LOT of wear!!!

She probably came home with a set of balls from and old 6-foot K-Mart table from years ago. Or something of that nature.

I imagine that the k-mart / sears / monkey ward guess is the correct one. Now I just have to figure out a use for these things so that she will continue to bring found pool related items home.

Does anybody remember a thread where y'all were posting pictures of the worst cues you ever saw? I think I saw one of those pictured the other day and was trying to find the thread to verify.

Put them on your nightstand. They make a great "personal home defense" weapon. Just ask that crazy b**ch down here in Texas that used billiard balls to thwart a home invasion last year !!!

Throw this one in the pot, while you're at it. According to Grady Matthews; place a five-ball and an orange on the nightstand. When your wife can tell the difference between the two, it's time to get a new wife.
Now, don't shoot me Mrs. gdc, I'm only the messenger. :D

WoodyJ has the correct answer. For years there have been sets of pool balls manufactured in snooker size (2 1/8"). I have an old set of CLAY balls in this configuration. It cannot possibly be from wear, since the CB gets the MOST wear, and would be considerably smaller than the other balls.

Snooker balls start out at 2 1/8" versus 2 1/4" for regular pool balls? But a snooker set isn't 1-15 plus cue like a set of these 2 1/8" balls are:

You can play some really fun ring games with them. Gamble and take turns on making spot shots , end rail cut shots, play some 3ball (all of these are also fun with golf balls and those little balls unscrewed from billiard keychains). Try inventing some new trick shots. Incorporate a big cueball or use the little one on big balls.

Surreptitiously switch a little ball for a corresponding big ball in the middle of someone else's game at the poolroom. Enjoy trying to keep a straight face before and after the discovery.

Or make a shadow box to hang in your billiards room and have this rack of balls be the highlight.

Hell, the more ideas you think of, the more you could even sell them for on ebay : )

Scott just so ya know:

most snooker balls manuafactored are 2 1/16" with no numbers on them.

American snooke balls are 2 1/8" and the colore 2-7 have the numbers on them

That's Jimmy Reid's line. Still funny. Not saying Grady didnt have game but I think Reid's game with the women might have been a ball stronger or two.

Yep. And, come to think of it, Grady gives him credit for it in one of his (Grady's) dvd's, if memory serves.

As Scott said, they made numbered balls the same size as snooker balls years ago. They were for people who wanted to use snooker tables for pool games. Think like payball, 9 ball. Not much different than us using pool balls on a snooker table, which we sometimes did.

Eric...I don't care what the difference in size is, between English snooker balls and American snooker balls. What I said is true. There have been "snooker-size" balls manufactured for many years, for use in American pool games (like 8ball, 9ball, 14.1, etc), on snooker tables. They look just like normal 2 1/4" pool balls, except they're smaller. I have a set myself. My set is 2 1/8" balls.

Scott,

You are correct of course and my first guess would be that is what she stumbled on. I wanted a set to use on the pool table at my local pool hall years ago but before I got around to buying them I got hooked on snooker. Something mesmerizing and red, seven, red, seven, over and over. When I have the room for a table again I'm going to try to chase down an old five by ten, don't care if it is a pool or snooker table. If it is a snooker table I'll find the set of standard numbered balls to fit it.

Sizes

Snooker and pool balls are available in these sizes.
2-1/4, 2-1/8, 2-1/16, 2, 1-7/8
snooker world standard is 2-1/16 weighing 5 oz
I prefer 2-1/8 (i think they weigh 4-1/2 oz)
