boys dressing badly

NASCAR went from were POOL is to big business with a Dress Code, Conduct, and Etiquette Code, maybe Pool should follow NASCAR example.:banghead:[/QUOTE]

what dress code does nascar have? a fire suit and helmet. have you been to a nascar event - i have. half of the fans look like they walked out of darwin's waiting room right to trackside. and conduct and etiquette - these f-in guys still have fist fights trackside over getting put into the wall. and i wish i could remember who it was a few weeks back almost killed another driver by wrecking him in retaliation for a previous wreck. yep those drivers are sure the classy bunch. all they have done is followed the model jeff gordon layed out. they try to look good and say the right things but they haven't changed and sure jeff brought in some upper class fans and they added races to venues not in the south, but don't be fooled. the hardcore base of fans is still the same and so is the hardcore base of drivers. c'mon down here to the south and you can see for your self.
p.s. it's not just the guys either. that danica patrick sure is a lady isn't' she.

Wait a minute....

NASCAR has a dress code? Drivers have worn jumpsuits for as long as I can recall. Any and all old footage has them wearing jumpsuits. Or are you talking about everyday life, when they wear t-shirts and jeans like I've seen Junior do? Not getting the whole dress code in which you're referring.
In their ads they look sharp, but then again, they're getting paid to dress in their sponsor's colors and logos for the ads.

I don't recall any pool ads where the player is not smartly dressed. Maybe I don't pay attention to those ads.

Conduct? You mean like fist fights in the pits when one driver puts another into the wall? Trash talking each other to the press? That kind of conduct and Etiquette?

Beat me by a minutes.. :)

Maybe we should try not to look like Panhandlers, and Street People.

Simple DRESS CODE like:

NO RIPPED OR TORN CLOTHING

T-shirts without the Word F***, or S*** on it. Or thing that are offensive.

Shirts with Collars

Jeans O.K. as long as they are not torn

Shoe & Socks, ( Tennis Shoes are O.K.) No Bare Feet, No Sandals, No Flip Flops.

i haven't seen any of that at any pro tournament ever. they are dressed better than that. hell, that's the minimum dress code for apa tournaments. as far as what we wear when we play for fun i don't think that matters one bit.

Mully, I get what you mean about not wearing jeans with holes or baggy shirts with giant swears on them. But it's like thrash attack says. Those things aren't a just matter of comfort, they're also matter of personal expression. The guys wearing them are probably trying to proclaim "I don't give a fu@$ what you think about my clothes". In reality it's a giant red flag that says "I'm desperately trying to project a certain look because I really care what people think about my clothes" :P The guys who really don't care wear a plain tee shirt.

--
For an even halfway major tournament I'd like these guys to throw on something else, and our room owner made people change if they came in with offensive shirts. But for everyday hanging around, or just the local weekly tournament? Nah, they're dressing in a way that they think looks cool. They're dead wrong but you gotta let them try :P

...
On that vein, wearing hats indoors is being rude? I know you're in Japan and all but damn, that's kinda 1940's. It never offended me in the slightest. Why would it? It's less comfortable for the other guy and he'll be distracted by the bill when he shoots... but his comfort doesn't affect me.

The only thing I find offensive is how the kids these days go for the biggest, flattest hat bill possible :B Does that look retarded or what? In my day we spent hours curling that shìt into a nice U. Somehow it's become opposite day and uncurled brims are cool now. I personally give those kids a swirlie, hat an all, when I see it.

No hats, agr-r-g-g-h-h!

I can relate to a lot of what's been said so far except the desire to ban hats.

While I understand that many were raised that hats are not to be worn indoors, sorry. The glare of standard pool table lights bothers me and I wear a baseball-style cap to block it out. Ban the use of direct overhead lighting and I'll not wear a cap with a brim.

Edit: BTW during competition I always remove my hat when my opponent is shooting or between games and hang it on my stick and/or cueholder but that's because I want to keep my hat from getting too sweaty inside.

hmmm... wonder why this thread got started?

it's weird how people care about what others wear.

I mean, I can see getting a little spiffy in a high dollar televised tournament

but for any touney in a bar or practicing... who the hell cares, I say wear whatever you feel like.

People getting dressed up to play in a bar... what the hell

Wait, I know why now.. it's because they treat it like it's a event, like they're going out for the evening and want to look good

I'm not looking to impress anyone, I want to be comfortable because I'm just going to shoot pool.

Button down shirts, polo shirts... what the hell is all that crap? I got regular shirts, nice shirts and I got t-shirts. That's it.. I dont' care if it has buttons on it or not, it's a damn shirt the way I see it. It's either long sleeve or short sleeve.

Why the hell am I replying to this post?

I think I was trying to be funny, but no one will probably get it

Some will think I'm ragging on them

But I'm not,

hehe

I am just a regular guy though.. I don't own one piece of clothing because it has some "brand" name on it. I think it's stupid

But that's just me, to each his own. Whatever turns your crank!!!

I think I better stop.. I"m starting to ramble and the jokes probably ran it's course by now

I can't wait till this days over with and I can get the hell out of work.

It's been a long week.

Later, I think I'll go have a smoke.

Pisses me off, I have to walk all the way downstairs and out of the building just to have a quick smoke. I wish it was the 70's again.

damn, that was kind of funny, Cali... reading it back.. hehe. I'll talk to you later:D

Don't no about you but I have seen my hero Efern in the finals of a tournament were the promoter or hotel owner would have him wear a shirt at least two sizes too big. An then two or three sponsor try to get their patches an logos to stay pasted on the damn shirt. To add insult to ensurer Efern in his finial match keeps trying to make sure they stay on. I really fell sorry for the man. He could buy me 1000 times but looks like he just came from the thrift store. This is not a good image for our sport. Some of these people should think about the way this looks. :yeah:

here my 2 cents. I understand the "wear what makes you comfortable" vibe. I like rocking the button up shirt and black pants, and my black chuck taylors, best shoes ever but i digress. There is 1 pool fashion faux pas that i cant stand and its baggy sleeves!!! for crying out loud roll them up while playing. Maybe it's just my experiance but the players that wear the long baggy sleeves seem to be the ones that are shakey on the table "accidently" bumping balls while shooting or lining up shots  but thats like i said just my 2 cents

Everyone loves my Simonis cape, phenolic hat and felt elf shoes with bells on the toes. I guess I don't fall in the catagory of dressing badly.

This is a great point. Half the time I see televised events, the players look like a combination of a walking billboard, and a fourth grade art project. They have sponsorship patches all over their clothing. It looks tacky. So now we're back to square one because sometimes the "dress code" for these events ends up leaving people looking foolish.

this is so unimportant? but kind of interesting to me?

is there any sport other than pool -- individual or team -- where the players dress so slovenly? i'm not talking about a nite out with your buds! but a competition which will be streamed or even televised?

for a sport which is losing 'share of attention' generation-by-generation, maybe the silly little things can make a difference?

girls -- i'm not talking about you! you dress comfortably and smartly!

but, a glance at any other sport -- well, let's admit bowling shirts are not exactly fashion-forward, and i'm not sure poker is really a sport? -- but other sports have uniforms or dress codes or at least a basement-level sense of style?

if pool ever again gains some significant tv exposure ... well, disney is as ruthless as goldman. disney owns abc which is losing share, shedding people, running scared. and abc owns 80% of the espn family, which is smartly profitable.

but, for all its frat boy casualness, espn has the buttoned-down corporate culture looming over it.

but, maybe i'm all wrong?

or, as i prefer to believe, the pool community is so fortunate that i'm so generous in sharing my thoughts!

cheers!

Don't know if this is true or not , seems about the same to me over the 40 years i've been playing or watching , it seems that if pool players , professionals i mean , aren't making a ton of money then pool is dwindling in some people's eyes.

It is what it is , a game people play casually , usually to socialize , with a minority being hardcore. Bowling is going downhill , but it is another social game . Tough to have bowling lanes in your home , but not a pool table.

Maybe when pool rooms return and sports bars aren't the main venue for the game then maybe things will change , but the money for pool is always fronted by the players , just like horse racing , hence calcuttas .

Maybe when the casual and serious players can play on well maintained equipment they will dress accordingly . The strength of pool is anywhere you can put tables you can have a tournament . It's portable , another strength , though some see it as a weakness , is no central controlling body to dictate rules , this is left up to tournament organizers , or the individuals .

No one being chastised and prevented from participating for some anti-social behavior away from the game . No Bud Seligs , or David Sterns changing equipment because his wife is against animal products(leather) being used.

The politics of the game of pool is local , to the area it is being played , or those having the tournament dictate the politics , if you don't like it you don't have to play , and , there is always another venue , a pool strength.

All the pool players in the past , Mosconi , Crane , even U.J. Puckett dressed in suits , but where they played it was about the game , not the music , the personalities , or what ever pool represents to people other THAN the game .

When you really like something , or someone , those things tend to hold your interest , not what they represent . Ever like someone personally , but dislike their views about any particular subject matter ?

That the way it is with pool .

Good Point

So, every 20-something that hits the road to the state tournament should bring a 3 piece suit with them in case they make the finals? Or maybe after a week-long tournament, they just want to be comfortable so they can focus on their game. They're not on TV, so what's the bother?

However, this was a State Championship and only a 1 day tournament! Almost all of the players were within driving distance if not all of them. A pair of slacks and a collared shirt would not be a burden. I did not mention a 3 piece suit. Just something decent that would help grow the sport and attract sponsors.

I suppose you're not entirely off base. I'm used to a state tourney that lasts about 4 days, and a good majority of the players are from out of town.
