Pattern Play of the Day, Sunday April 24

Using the WEI table to diagram you preferred pattern play, what routes would you use to get out here in 9 ball?

What english (if any) would you use?

It may look simple, but getting out here poses it's challenges and there are more than a few options available.

Maybe some of this stuff is actually sinking in... I envisioned pretty much what Neil diagrammed in his first response.

Now for me to actually make those shots, well........ :o

Cool exercise. I look forward to the rest of the responses. Thanks for putting this up, Tate.

No english, just speed control.

Neil,

I don't know if you have a table at home, but if you get on one and try it you'll see your shot on the 7 requires right english at a slow speed to get that angle.

Without looking at anyone's submissions, this is what I think of doing as a 3-ball runout.

That's exactly what I was working on this morning. The 7 shot with soft draw or soft draw with right, going around the 8 to get the natural angle.

So often going all the way around the object ball two rails is an overlooked shot, but it's much easier to get position this way because speed isn't as crutial. For some reason our brains don't see this position.

Most shooters would use a little low right off of the 7 to shape up
the 8 ( if you blow your first choice there are still pockets to go to) then low left to get on the nine. Very natural. Inside off the 7 to get in front of the 8 is unnatural and must be forced. Not necessary here. Shape on 9 easy from almost anywhere.

Buttom rights, less speed control needed, bigger area of position to play for. Real simple.

This type of thing often comes up in side pocket shots, where position comes up short. The example below shows a scenario where it makes sense to go around the object ball in a similar way.

Sigel would be proud of you.He preaches two rails, middle of the table.
There's no angle on the 8 that doesn't get the 9.
And low right eliminates some skids.

If the table is really fast, you want to hit it and your comfortable with your rails you can do this. Stun with a bit of rights. You can come in tighter towards the middle of the table if you want, just put more spin on it.

I would probably take this shot out of all of them. I can let my stroke out, it's pretty natural and less chance of scratching in the corner or side pocket by trying to finesse it by going 2 rails around the 8 with buttom rights also the cueball is coming into the line of position off the 4th rail. Almost anywhere near centre table would be fine. Under pressure I like this route.

Chris, you don't want right english on it. If you do, you are much more likely to overrun the 8. All you need is a little draw. Look at where the stun shot goes, and just add a little draw to get there. You are already picking up some right by cutting the 7.

I was concerned about the speed with draw, but I tried it and you're right, you can use a little soft draw to kill the ball. Actually I just shot it with soft draw and inside and that pretty much killed the cue ball too.

If I went to the short side of the 8, I would definitely just plan to overrun the angle and go as your second shot was diagrammed.

I was mainly posting this to give players a view on what options exist because you never know on a congested table what you might have to do. it's also kind of nice that you can have a pretty step angle on the 7 and still get around the 8 if you hit it good - more than the eye might see.

If the angle on the 7 were much steeper, or the table really fast, this is definitely what I would do. What I like about this is you can focus on the shot because the shape is natural and the margin for error is pretty large.

Hmm~ I'll admit I am one of those guys who would probably get down on the 7 and see it as an inside english shot. It's one of those angles I'm so comfortable with, I can usually hit either the thin or full side of the pocket at will. So I'd probably try a full hit, a little inside, mostly top. That sounds complicated but unless I'm wearing Wei Goggles, it looks like pure top and a fat hit should miss the 8. But you'd want a little inside anyway just to be safe.

I do get what you're saying about wrapping around the ball as a position play. That's a good concept. Sometimes we put on our position blinders and ignore perfectly easy routes. That might be what I'm doing when I choose the softish inside english with the 7 rather than the natural stun routes. I'll set it up next time I'm at the pool hall.

Here's another position play that I think overlooked. I think when you're a beginner you see it right away and don't even think of the other options. As you get more advanced you become Fancy Dan™ and zigzag across the table or go 3 rails. Or you settle for one of those angled shots into the far corner, which can be a little scary. Then later you realize there was nothing wrong with the "beginner" option really. Stun to A, low right to B, and even though it's not as straight as some would like you're not gonna miss it. Or at least I'd feel better shooting in this pocket than the opposite corner.
