name 1 great player that dont have a championship title

I
I have to go with Bustamante also. He seems to fold in the latter stages of big events. It's probably become a 'thing" with him now because he knows he should have won at least a couple of majors by now (U.S. Open, Worlds etc).

Has Orcullo won a major?

Here are some of his wins:

2009 Predator International Ten-ball
2008 Asian Nine-ball Tour, China Leg
2008 World Nine-ball Open
2007 World Straight Pool Championship 5th place
2007 World Eight-ball Championship 2nd place
2007 BCA Open Nine-ball Champion
2006 World Pool League Champion
2006 US Bar Table Champion ( eight-ball)
2006 Reno Open winner (nine-ball)
2006 Hard Times Billiards Summer Jamboree winner (nine-ball)

Sooo.... according to the consensus on here, no matter how many tournaments you win, you can only be a champion if you win DCC, U.S. Open, or the World Championship????? Wow, you guys are tough!

hah whats even more shocking is some dont even consider the dcc a major

DCC 9-ball is not a Major in many ways counted.

It is of course arguable which is a Major and which is not, but if WPC and US-Open are "the real ones" and you start to list the smaller ones after that, DCC would have hard times coming in top 8 as a Major. I mean come'on, race to 7, re-buy and draw, guys are playing in jeans, and for example this year it was played at the same time as the World Team Championships. The prize money has increased from around 9k to 14k though, but still far from the "real" pots.

Field has been tough in many years that's true, but many of the players are focusing on the gambling matches instead of the tournament.

Derby City All-around Champion for 2008

All-Japan 9Ball Champion 2002

I think those are Major wins. He should have more, I guess.

He won the All-Japan also 2009. He has won many many BIG tournaments and is one of the toughest World Beaters there is, but no, he has NEVER won a true World Championships nor US:Open, so he's definitely my vote.

Jose Parica could come in second. Yang third, as he's much younger than those other two.

Has Orcullo won a major?

He has won three Majors but not a World Title.

Biggest he has won was bigger than Django has ever won; The Qatar Open 2008.
40K for the winner and the toughest field in the last 2,5 years.

He's also won the BCA and Predator International, which comes close after "the real Majors", WPC and US:Open.

In any other sport you need to win big majors to be considered great, pool should be no different. It's like in tennis you got players like andy murray with great skill winning loads of tour stops but always falls short in the grand slam events.

Did Minnesota Fats ever win a title? For most americans, he is perceived as being as skillful as Mosconi.

Mark Tad

Someone who has NOT won the big one. I would say Mark Tad He was and still is a very very strong player, and never snapped off any Big ones.

P.S he played In DDC about 3 years with a cue he got at Wal-Mart and got in the cash placing something like 10 place in the banks event out of 200 plus players..

Gary Spaeth Champion without a title

Well he's gone now but my old road partner, Gary Spaeth won many championship titles at Bank Pool. But a lot of people don't realize his 9-ball game was right up there with all of the greats of his time. He had several second place showings at major 9-ball tourneys but was never able to get over that hump! All the top tournament players will tell you that the first major is always the toughest to win. After you have a title under your belt it's easier after that. Gary beat almost all the top pros at one time or another and if you ask any of them from his era and they'll tell you that Gary wasn't a soft draw for anyone and he was especially dangerous, in that he often banked his way out of seemingly desparate situations. His track record against Buddy in tournament play would astound most people. While I was staking Gary he played Buddy 6 times in 9-ball tournament play. Gary was 6 for 6 but the funny thing is that the one time Buddy did beat Gary in a tournament while I was staking him, it was Bank Pool! LOL Gary did come back through the losers bracket and with the tournament though. Gary was taken from us too soon. He had cancer the last 2 years of his life and frankly he played better pool during that time than anytime in his life. He developed more patience and his cueball control was as good as anyones. When he put you in a trap, you were in serious shit! Ask Shannon Daulton. Gary was one of his mentors but when they played the gloves came off! They played in the 2000 DCC in the 9-Ball division. Gary spanked Shannon 7-2! He beat Earl 9-5 at Brass Tap Billiards in Raleigh coming in second in that tournament. He'd have won that one but he played "Baby Face" in the finals. "BF" knew that the best way to beat Gary was to SLOOOOOOWWWWW him down! He slowed his normal "snails pace" down to "barely alive" and put Gary in a coma. It was still close, but Gary was a rythym player, kind of like Earl, and when "BF" put the brakes on it just messed with Gary's natural rythym and he started making positional errors and then played bank shots rather than safeties because he didn't want to slow things down any himself, I guess. Any way I think Gary was the best 9-Ball player of his era not to have won a major 9-ball title!

Why not wear jeans? Who's watching anyway? I thnk most who can play, play this event for the money and only the money! This is a place to go to have a chance to make a real score!

Well I disagree with the jeans/dress code opinion, but also with the money scoring opinion. DCC definitely is a carnival and for some the most exiting event of the year, but for example the 9-ball divisions pay day, is much less than those which are considered more as a Major amongst professionals.
