Nice Utility Shot

I learned this years ago and wanted to share it. It's a great little shot you can use a variety different ways and it's simple. If it's too simple or everybody knows it, then flame away.

Aim directly at the face of the object ball. Hit the cue ball with low inside English with a medium-soft stroke. You'll see the cue ball masse slightly and your object ball should drop. If you need to keep the cue ball on that side of the table, it's pretty handy.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

inside would send it a rail or 2 to the opposite long rail side; but it would masse a little stronger than use outside. although outside would help spin the ball in and keep the cb on the ob side. everyone should be able to hit this with both inside and outside, so yes, it's a useful shot to practice. :)

I understand what newstroke is trying to say. And yes, it should be inside spin.

I'll try it out tonight.

His references to "masse" and "keep the cueball on that side of the table" would indicate outside spin.

Aaron *suspects there is some confusion regarding "inside" vs. "outside".

I think he means that with a lot of inside, there will be some cueball squirt that will send it on the proper track to hit the hit-point for a walk down the rail.

LOL, let's hope not because that shot doesn't do any of the things he said. It doesn't: a) make the shot simpler; b) involve masse in any helpful way; c) work at slow speeds; d) make it easier to keep the cueball on that side of the table.

No, I'm going to give the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume he just made the common mistake of using the term "inside" for what would be left-hand spin on this shot.

And if he did in fact mean low-left, then I would have to agree with him that at slow speed, it is a good way to pocket the ball and keep the cueball on that side of the table. And yes, you could do it by aiming directly at the face of the OB, assuming the correct combination of speed and spin.

Aaron, it is possible to use a lot of inside, have a high deflection cue that will move the cb over more, and give a straighter line to the ob. The inside will keep the cb on that side at a slow speed by wanting to go downtable instead of across table.

Newstroke: While very possible to do it your way, and I have done it, there are easier ways. Draw-drag will do the same thing, and hold the cb also. Very speed sensitive.

A good drill for you- keep moving the cb to a steeper angle, and see at what angle you can pocket the ball and still spin the cb down to the bottom rail. Knowing that comes in handy.

I use a very high deflection cue, and I'm actually the heaviest user of low-inside I know. Most people I know avoid low inside like the plague for obvious reasons. But I still don't think I can hold the cueball on that half of the table with low-inside; I will try it later.

I seriously doubt that's what the OP meant, though. It seems much more likely to me that he meant what he said, aim directly at the ball and allow the masse effect to bring the cueball in line to pocket the ball, which would require low-outside and medium slow speed, and would be far simpler than squirting the ball on line with inside.

If you hit this shot with a ton of low left and use a skid stroke the cue ball will have a lot of spin on it just as it almost stops when it hits the ob. The ton of left will spin the ball in and keep the cue ball an inch or two off the rail.I shoot this shot from 6 or 7 feet and can almost kill the cue ball on the rail. The secret is the skid stroke.

The diagram I see has the cue ball more or less right between the side pockets and the object ball on the cushion at the headstring. Is that the shot you see? If so, I doubt you can keep the cue ball within 6 inches of the rail unless the cushions are dead.

I think the OP needs to come back and tell us what shot he meant and whether he wants us to use left or right side spin.

Holding a ball with outside is handy, but I don't think that's what newstroke was getting at. Actually I have no idea what he's getting at. Not to be mean, but this is just a regular routine rail cut. Lotta times you gotta use low outside on such a shot but occasionally inside is called for. But low-inside is one of the more uncommon englishes and I can't think of a reason to use it here.

Newstroke, are you saying you use low inside just to help you make this ball go in the pocket? Cuz that's a bad habit that you should work on breaking. Gotta be able to make shots like this consistently with any english (but if I could master only one english for this cut it'd be low outside).

Low would offset the use of inside or vise verse depending on the angle, speed etc. The o/b is slightly off the rail and full in the face to me means dead on. I have no idea what NS actually means but just PTBITH keeps the c/b on that side of the table. Confused:confused:

Here is what I THINK he's trying to convey.

CueTable Help

In my diagram I have shown the path I can reliably produce with inside spin, that being low RIGHT (I've always been taught that the term inside or outside is relative to the cut direction) and a very full yet RAIL FIRST hit.

Maybe he meant keeping the cue ball on the other side of the table as if playing position for the 8 in my diagram. I don't see how anyone can keep this close to the rail where the 1 is either, with ANY spin.

As he diagrammed the shot,a BALL FIRST hit on the one with the same speed and spin brings MY ball 2 rails out of that lower corner and into path back towards the middle of the table, like this.

CueTable Help

Back the first shot I explained. It is this same technique that makes this shot possible, just with much more stroke.....playing position on the 8 again.

CueTable Help

With MUCH more stroke than that,I give you the Larry Nevel inside spin monster draw. I can do this shot from about point A fairly reliably,Larry has done it in front of me from 1" off the end rail, and says he can do it from FROZE on the rail when he's really in stroke.

At least that's what I think. Tommy D.

low outside is bottom right ?

sorry, i really never understood the inside and outside english.

In this case, low outside would be low left. Outside is always opposite of the way you are cutting the ball, so if we are cutting this ball into the corner pocket (to the right), left would be outside and right would be inside. For a straight in shot, you would have to say "left" or "right" since you are not cutting the ball.

Don't feel bad, a lot of people confuse inside and outside, and I believe that confusion is the reason for this thread's derailment. Very seldom does inside spin make pocketing a ball easier; typically you only use inside if the ball can't be pocketed without it, or if you need to get the cueball somewhere for the next shot. Outside, on the other hand, is often used cut balls, and in this case it is the best way to hold the CB in the vicinity of the OB, as others have noted.

Hopefully the OP will return and clear this up for us.

LOL, let's hope not because that shot doesn't do any of the things he said.

... You guys know that we need to consider this.....

Not that I've been on these boards a whole long time... but...... NewStroke is much more likely to post something pulling our legs, or joking than he is to post some instructional or advice post.

I had not considered that, but you may be right. In which case we are the suckers pushing the thread toward page 3, LOL.
