Just finished the John Schmidt 171 Ball Run - Player Review (with Mark Wilson and John Schmidt - from John's match vs. Stevie Moore at 2010 DCC).

I mentioned Mark Wilson's high opinion of this DVD and of John's analysis in another thread, but was quite unprepared for this gem (only now available for public consumption).

I have all the Accu-Stats Player Review tapes, but I would have to say that John's analysis is the most detailed and instructional of them all. He clearly plays on an intellectual level far above the average pro player; kudo's to John.

My only worry is that this DVD is so packed with the finer points that aspiring players will tend to gloss over many of them; not realizing how critical they are.

Though I've only been playing seriously for 5 or 6 years, I have studiously tried to pick the straight pool brains of players such as Danny D., Grady M., Jeanette Lee, Gene Nagy, Mark Wilson, Ed Deska, and sjm (and heck, I've even gotten some advice from Steve Lipsky...just not enough). I will say that I, like Mark, was surprised to hear several new insights rendered by John that I have not heard from some real masters.

I can't wait until Mark Wilson's instructional book becomes available (an almost monumental work, still in progress) - the principles of advanced play that he covers dovetail almost exactly with the principles that John demonstrates throughout this DVD; and both are sources that contain information available nowhere else in pool to my knowledge. The straight pool player that masters the info in these 2 sources will be a fearsome adversary. JMO.

BUMP

I look forward to when this DVD is available :)

I currently got a copy of JS's 245 high run and have yet to watch it, but I will certainly be enjoying every shot of each rack tomorrow evening whilst destroying a cigar and some coffee :D

Thanks for your O, Mr Betmore, no wonder Bill Marop has advanced that far with his 14.1 skills. Being taught by such a knowledgeable player like John. Most important, John apparently has a natural ability to teach, which is not a given one. Not necessarily a good player can be a good instructor.

V-man,
You have no idea how good this tape is. Much of the info that John and Mark discuss is central to the theme that "superior ball pocketing is NOT enough to make the really high runs."

I found it interesting that so many members posting in the "200 ball runners" thread keep throwing around a lot of 9-ball names. Those superior 9-ball skills may get you the occasional 100 or 150; but are unlikely to result in the very high runs that the masters are posting. There are many reasons; and most are discussed on this tape, and no where else I know of.

A superior book could easily be produced from a scholarly analysis of each point raised in this video - most are not discussed anywhere in the current pool literature (though most will be covered in Mark's upcoming book, applied to pool excellence in general rather than directed specifically at straight pool as in this DVD).

thanks so much don for the kind words.
honestly i dont remember much what i said ,i just remember looking at the layouts and explaining what goes through my head as i play.

im surprised it makes sense ,the game is so complicated and when im playing ive got so much to analyze and execute that its hard to put in words and have it make sense.

anyway thanks everybody for supporting me and my videos and accu stats.

i wont be producing any more runs for a while ,it looks like ill be working the oil spill here in pensacola for a few months on my buddies boat.

Best of luck John. You'll get a chance to make some money while doing some really meaningful work. Be safe.

accu-stats

is anyone else upset because they were expecting to see a video linked here?

Probably not. We understand that Pat Fleming needs to make some money on his product or he would not be able to bring us all these great videos.

There is plenty of free stuff out there for those of us on a budget.

john: i'm moving to florida soon. this oil disaster is really disturbing. for the life of me i don't know why they don't just cram a HUGE steel and concrete spike down that well to stop the oil. it seems like a no-brainer to me. they could position it right over the hole and drop it in. .... how far down the coast has this leak spread? i'll be near tampa.

good luck on the boat. send some pics.

I bought the video and am slightly embarrassed to say that I have not viewed it yet.. Will be certain to try this weekend. 14.1 is a tremendous game for sure..
