Camel Bone

I have worked with camel bone more than most other cuemakers I am guessing and you will be hard pressed to get it in the right size and form to make handle sleeves. It is super for inlays, but almost square shaped bones are hard to do much else with. It does yield some very nice inlay slabs up to 7/8" or so wide.
Convince the customer to use camel fur as a wrap instead.
If you want to do a 3-piece segmented antler handle, have fun.
It will be a lot of pain.
Check this thread Dave, Chuck made a forearm and sleeve from Elk.

Yes I sw that thread, nice cue! I have talk to the guy and tried to convince him to use holly as it looks like ivory (I have a nice clear 2" blank of it) but he really wants a bone of some type. For now, he'll have to wait, and put more money aside, I realized that they don't give that stuff away.

bone for handle
i bought a few pieces of camel tying to get a piece that i could use as a handle, all the pieces i bought did not have the right sizes, they were all too hollow, too crooked, or had some other flaws. i have bought all types of horn, bone, and antler you could think of, the only 2 i have found i could use were, water buffalo horn, [ you have to use 5 inch pieces segmented together ], and elk antler. the problem with elk is finding a piece long enough, straight enough, and solid enough.
my elk antler supplier cuts 1000's of pounds of antler each year and finds only a very few pieces that i can use for cues.
warther will sell a piece of ivory big enough for a handle or forearm, last time i checked cost was around $ 1100.00, can you think about going out the next morning after you carefully drilled and cored that piece and see a big crack from one end to the other. i'm sure there are builders out there that can do it, but i am not going to take the chance.

Holy horns batman!! $3K???? wow. That looks like a hell of a rack, but honestly, $3K? that's about how much dancers pay for their racks, but they make it back, rather quickly, but that's another matter....:wink:
Maybe He'll let me cut off just what I need and pay by the inch....
Chuck, I've already told the guy he doesn't have enough money to afford Ivory, and neither do I if I crack it
He actually wanted originally to use a set of whitetail antlers he had from a kill he got. He showed them to me and there was barely enough width to make some ferrules. I'm sure we'll figure something out eventually. Thanks for all the input guys.

Dave, for 3K you can fly up here and whack an Elk. You'll have all the horn you can use and believe me, once you've had elk, beef won't taste the same. You can cut it with a fork.

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought a set of antlers tonight. I hope it turns out okay. It isn't costing too much so, we'll see.
