Who is Country? a good buddy of mine says that he is his Dad, and a few more of my friends confirm it.. My buddy told me that nobody really knows his real name, he was only known for "Country". He said that he was possibly one of the best one pocket players that ever lived...My buddy is originally from New York. I don't really want to name my buddy's name but If you know him, you can let me know.

I have heard many stories about Country as I used to live in NY. A friend of mine Gil Black would tell me about him and how good the guy played. Hope some people can share some stories. :)

Country!!

Country is a very strong one hole player. He loves to bet and always has a stack of money. Iv'e met him a few times, but never seen him play one pocket. I heard a story from a friend of mine that Country and Denny Fox played for 28+ hours @ Legends billiards in Pensacola, Fl. I was told Country was spotting Denny 9-8 or 9-7 and ended up seven games winner @100 a game.
I did however play in a weekly $10 a game(break and run pays double) 10 ball ring game with Country, Rick Howard and Denny Fox. Country came out big winner after about 14 hours and from what I was told came out winner just about every week.
Very Good Player, super nice guy, but I'm sad to say I heard he is very sick. I was told cancer.

He's got to be in his 70's. First saw him in New York in the mid 60's. He was a legendary hustler even then. I almost played him once in McGirr's, before I found out who he was. Always saw him wearing this long beige trench coat and a small hat everywhere he went. He stayed in the shadows pretty much, just observing and maybe side betting from the rail. He could have been orchestrating the action for all I know.

The one that you are talking about *****es every time he books loser in the 10 ball ring game and goes home to not come back for five months.

Is that the guy? He is probably around 80 now and he is from New York. A big time high roller and hustler. If that is him, he was not one of the best one pocket players that ever lived. I could have probably played him 9 to 7. He was however, a terrific 8 ball player (using the old "dirty" rules). I wouldnt fool with him at that game. He and I played partners against Freddy Salem for 1k a man at the Rack in Detroit. I cant tell that story, the San Jose Duck will accuse me of bragging again.

BRO ZZ TOP

Well my buddy is in his late 30's so it would sound about right with the whole age thing that country could really be his father... It's just the fact the there are a lot of people in pool that likes to talk, then again there are also alot of people that tell the truth, so it's just hard to tell. My friend that claims to be his son is also a hell of a one pocket player and isn't afraid to go big on money.

Here is a pic of Country with Willie Mosconi. :)

Lenny, that's not him. Country was not that tall and darker complected. And that photo has to be at least 60 years old. He would be over 100 now!

That picture looks like him to me. He definitely was a very big man- I saw him less than 6 years ago just before the Golden Cue closed.

I heard he was arrested in the 70's i think and they found over 2 million in his house.

I knew him very well. It aint him. Country was much slimmer to begin with, and better looking. He was arrested in the 90s, did a nice taste and has been out for awhile. He has got to be in his 80s. Is the guy who claims to be his son have Monroe as a last name?

adhd23, you aren't thinking of the same guy. The guy you are talking about is from Brewton, AL and is probably 50 at the oldest. I can't remember his real name.

Even if it isn't Country it's a cool picture Lenny. Is September 1950 right for the date on the calendar?

I saw this picture on Grady's Facebook page (please keep the thread on-topic)

Here is the description he wrote

Willie Mosconi sometime in the forties doing an exhibition in a Detroit black pool room. To Willie's immedate left is the wonderful celebrated black pool huster I know only as Country. To his left the great bank pool and One Pocket champ Johnny "Cannonball" Chapman

Paul Lieb wrote that maybe Grady meant to his immediate right.

I have no clue, just passing on info.

The guy in the background to Mosconi's left with the hat on could be the very youthful Country. He looks like a young man and Country liked to always wear a hat. He does somewhat resemble Country as well. I first saw him fourteen years later at Guys and Dolls in NYC, so he wasn't that much older. His height is about right too. I would guess Country around 5'10".

Also, and this is maybe more accurate the guy kneeling down, almost behind the pool table on the far right of the photo may well be Cannonball. I took a good look at him with a magnifying glass and that looks like him. He would have been in his 20's then as well.

Grady could be right! You just have to find the guys he's talking about.

He isnt slim anymore but that happened to most of us. I met him first in late 90's and he was a bear of a man then 6-2, 250 id guess. I could be off slightly i suppose but he sure had a big presence

I didnt realize he had just gotten out. I know he made a big score at Chicago Billiards in CT and i thought that was around 94-96. But im just going on a poor memory.
