Hi All
Tickets are now on sale for the 2010 Mosconi Cup at the York Hall in London UK. The guys will need all the help they can get, this is a very intimidating arena to play in, pretty small and everyone is so close to the action.

Tickets are available through the website www.seetickets.com I could not find a link from the homepage direct to the tickets but just typed in Moscni Cup and it took me to the tickets.

Anyone else going to the Mosconi Cup in London this year?

Anyone else going to the Mosconi Cup in London this year?

Two years ago a few of my friends decided to go and then it changed to Malta.

There were some really good deals on Airfares to London then. We planned about a 10 day trip traveling. The Mosconi Cup was only 2 days of the trip.

Hopefully the same type deals will be in place.

First of all, everyone left it on the table last year in Vegas. I tried so hard to create a mood the first day, wound up drunk as a skunk, certainly no more rowdy than they will be in York Hall and the Big Guy threatened to toss me out! All the better it was to kick Euro butt that day. Can't imagine that the Euro's, who btw were very classy in defeat, won't get up for this gig.

My big concern is over accomdations. I've looked for hotels close and haven't found alot. I suppose you are close to the tube and could stay elsewhere. I've also read that the area of York Hall is kinda crappy. Found anyplace to stay yet ?

I hate not going. Many of the Euro fans that came to Vegas last year were VERY outgoing and a pleasure to hang out with. I'd love to pay their hospitality back to them in their own country.

Any other thoughts ???

It used to be really 'crappy' not so bad there has been a lot of re-building and renovation going on in that general area. It started a few years ago and the pace has really picked up ready for the 2012 Olympics. There are some really pretty decent hotels in the area, the closets is the Old Town Hall building which is now the Town Hall Hotel. It's brand new this year and a 4 1/2 to 5 star depending on which site you go to. They are doing great deals at the moment to get the place recognised, normally rooms there are around $500 a night! However I found rooms for approx $160 a night average for the 4 days a huge saving. There is also an almost brand new Days not far maybe 5 mins away for about $100 a night not bad for London. Getting there is pretty easy too from Heathrow as long as you bypass rush hour on the Tube.

I know the boys will be up for this one, there is so much Cup history at this place, with a bit of luck they'll bring it on home.

There is some pretty amazing stuff to see and do as well in the days before or morning of the Cup games.

If you need anything else let me know what I can do to help.

Hi All
Just a quick update, I did receive an email from the Events Manager at the York Hall. It says the area has been cleaned up a lot from a few years ago and improvements are still on going. There is very little trouble in general around that area these days and virtually none around the venue itself.

There are several Hotels in the area that she reccomends, The Days is close and fairly good, Town Hall Appartments is close but very expensive and there is the Ship Inn which is close by in Hackney. It's a small Hotel above a Pub with about 10 rooms but is her overall pick. The closest Tube is Bethnal Green on the Central Line, which is just 2 mins from the York Hall, there are taxis available right outside the York Hall.

I also have some e-mails out to friends who will let me have some more info on Restaurants etc. So far everyone is saying you have to go to Sams Cafe at 292 Bethnal Green Rd especially for Breakfast. It's not fancy but it has one of the best Breakfasts in London with very friendly staff and it's cheap.

I did promise to get some restaurant tips from people I knew and here are a few:

The Camel, 277 Globe Road, London, Pub serving great beer and a wide range of Pie & Mash. Not your average pies but some really top drawer stuff.

Green & Red, 51 Bethnal Green Road, Mexican Restaurant.

Wild Cherry, 241-247 Globe Road, Bethnal Green, Vegetarian Restaurant.

Agra Tandoori, 277 Hackney Road, Indian Restaurant.

Mai'da Eatery, 148 -150 Bethnal Green Road, Indian Restaurant serving authentic Indian cuisine.

Palmers Restaurant, 238 Roman Road, Mile End, New British and got a good write up apparently from TimeOut magazine just a couple of months ago.

Let me know if anyone needs any more information or I can help in anyway. We will be in the UK for about a week prior to the Mosconi and then staying close by to the York Hall Thursday - Sunday nights.

I am planning to be an eye-witness of the torture of the Yanks!
HEre we go again. We havn't heard much from you on this for a few months. Wonder why.... MMM Oh yeah, you ran your mouth last year and ended up coming off as silly. :) ur ok Roy just seem to be talking when you shgould be listening. Let the games begin ;)

I'm thinking about it.

I was just in London for six days. I stayed at a hotel two blocks from the British Museum (you have to do something during the day other than sleep, and admission is free) for about $100/night including full breakfast. I found it through www.booking.com. That's also within walking distance of a nice 24-hour pool/snooker hall near the King's Cross train station, where I played on Tony Drago's personal table.

I just talked to someone else Friday night who played at the club in Kings Cross recently and also gave it the thumbs up. It's not very far from Kings Cross to the York Hall area a short tube or bus ride away.

I have also had a few people PM me letting me know they are thinking of going and asking a couple of questions about the general area etc. If you need any info either reply here or PM me and I will see what I can do. What I would say is that from everything I know of the area and have heard recently from people around there, the area is not an issue.

The real issue is the team will need all the support they can get, this is one tough place to play and that's aside from the fact that the Europeans have a pretty good line up whoever they pick.

A Couple of people have asked about the best way to pay for things and how to take money etc so I thought I would post what I prefer here on the board.

1. Credit Cards - Always check your card for Foreign Purchase Fees, they can add 3% or so to any purchase. I know for instance Capitol One has cards which have 0% on Foreign purchases. Also you should be good right throughout London and any other major city using our US Credit Cards. We did have a few problems outside of major cities with very small retailers because of the new Chip and Pin system in the UK last year, but those were few and far between.

2. Cash - Check with your Bank about Foreign Cash withdrawls via ATM's again fees can push the costs up. Some US Banks have reciprocal arrangements with British Banks for no extra fees. I know BOA has that agreement with Barclays. Your closest Barclays Cash Mchines are just a few minutes walk from the York Hall at 412 & 333 Bethnal Green Rd and 240 Whitechapel Rd.

3. Make sure you let your Banks and Card Issuers know you are going abroad and will be using Credit and Debit Cards, also make sure you do it for all people in your family who have cards and will be using them or they may have a temporary stop put on them.

4. Other - Make sure you take at least a few GBP with you for taxis or the tube from the Airport, or use an ATM there at the Airport. It's so much easier using the automated ticket machines than trying to purchase one from the ticketing window. I believe the single tube fare is around 4-5 Pounds one way into Central London from Heathrow. Taxi from the Airport will be pretty expensive, I don't know how much we never use them from Heathrow, but I would expect it to be between 50-80 Pounds into Central London. From Hethrow always ask the driver how much up front and only use Black Cabs or Licensed Mini Cabs. There is some great information on this sort of stuff at www.visitlondon.com

I am thinking of coming...
is anyone selling the MBR or ProShotGlove there? :D

Sorry I do not know the answer to that one, maybe you could drop an email to Matchroom via their website. I do know that a guy who has a shop doing Pool supplies in the UK will be attending, his website is
www.pro9.co.uk/html/theproshop/main.php He also posts here as
pro9dg you could contact him and see if he supplies them.

Lots of good info.

I was in London in July. Here are some additional hints:

Stay far away from anything labeled Travelex for getting pounds. At booths, they will charge up to 13% to change money and at their brand of ATM they will charge about 4%.

ATMs for many large UK banks have no extra charge. With a Chase debit card, money from a Santander ATM cost me 2%. That's close to the lowest a normal civilian is going to see. (Note that many cards will hide their charges in the bad exchange rates they give you. For the "fair" exchange rate, see www.xe.com)

If you're going to be in London for a while and using the Tube (which is great), consider getting a pre-paid Oyster card. You just pass it near a sensor on the turnstile and the appropriate amount is automatically taken out. You can buy these at most Tube stations.

For hotels, and especially if you want to get one away from York Hall for touristing, I recommend booking.com. Be sure to read the reviews. I started with reservations at a hotel that had unbelievable rates and after reading about others' experiences, I switched to one with merely amazing rates. By amazing, I mean $100/night including breakfast and two blocks from the British Museum.

oh it is ok...I am a reseller for those myself in Germany and figured if no-one else is selling them there...I might as well...but I do not want to step on anyone else's "turf" :)

Found some nice apartments for rent right near to the York Hall for a decent price....now if I can only get some days off from work and perhaps find a nice poolhall in London....:)
