The 1987 Gump Memorial includes our friend Gene Cooper & Gene "The Mighty Glove" Catron. Two different people, though they are very close in this photo.
Gene is on the top row, the guy with the very short sleeved t-shirt. Next to him (to his right) is a very young Johnny Archer and Gene (The Glove) Catron is next to Johnny, the guy with the hat on. Louie Lemke (rip) is next to Gene Cooper on the other side.
A lot of notable players in that tourney. Can you find Buddy, Earl, Little David and Wade Crane? They're that easy ones. How about Louie, Scotty, NY Blackie, Handsome Danny, Jeff Carter, Tommy K. and even a very young Shannon. Steve's widow Peggy is the pretty lady in the middle of the photo.
Who's that guy directly in front of Johnny A? I think he swallowed 3 canaries! LMAO! Kinda looks like Jim Rempe...
Oh, and someone shoulda told Gene C the 50's are over, and the short shirt store called and wants it returned! lol
Great pic hemicudas, thanks for sharing!
It took me 2 full years to ID all the players in this pic. Belinda Calhoun, providing the final varified name. Blackie, is not in it nor is Shannon. Jay, is correct on the rest. When you guys get through IDing these guys I will post the same photo with IDs on them, if you would like. Great to see you again, Jay. Got another appointment in Houston for the same procedure August 16. It's exactly one year since they kicked me out last time for having a blood clot in my leg. Wish me luck, my friend....

Best of luck with your procedure, sorry to hear you have to do it again. :sorry:
BTW, do you know who won, placed and showed in this talented field? And what the 1st place cheese may have been?

Good luck with your procedure, Hemi!

You're right Bill. Sure looked like Blackie in the red shirt and hat, but on closer inspection it's not him. Also the kid sitting down with the orange shirt looks so much like a young Shannon. I guess I don't know him. I can't even see that clearly using a magnifying glass.
P.S. That's Rosey in the brown hat sitting next to Sonny. I see Mark Showalter too and I think the grey haired guy on the end is Chuck Absher.
Sorry I'm from Jackson and live there now but I spent 79 to 99 in Chicago area and missed this one. Reed, didn't even play in this one.
Great to hear from you Hemi !! OK, I'll ID one that played a lot around my area for many years. The best car salesman/pool player in history (sorry Donny M.). That would be Tommy Sanders. Back row, third from the right. Red and white shirt.
Other than Tommy is 3rd from the RIGHT, you are totally correct, Punter. It's great to see you here, sir. Tommy was the final guy IDed, by Belinda. I, wrongly, had him labeled as a local player that looks exactly like Tommy. Belinda kept telling me it was Tommy and both of them being from TX she should know. Well, I finally got smart enough to look up the local player I thought it was and ask him if he was in this tourney and when he said no I knew I had to apologize to Belinda. I had never met Tommy but when I asked Reed Pierce, who lives here, about how he plays, Reed said the year I won the US Open, 1995, Tommy Sanders had busted him in TX. Believe me, if you beat Reed on the bar box back then you could play, sir....
