Bad rep

Should a member be red reped with an unlimited number of red rep points (-211853 point(s) total in my user cp) based on one objectionalable post. Or should they have an opportunity to redeem themselves? The mods don't recognize this as a problem. The alternative is to lurk and never post again. I don't think my overall posting history merits this extensive a bad rep.

So what was the post?

The thought that you put that much thought into the rep system makes me want to red rep you just to make a vein pop in your forehead. Why do you even care? You know, I don't think I've ever looked at anyone's rep as a guideline as to whether I would value their opinion or not.

I made a comment in a post about how some people imply ownership of certain ideas or techniques despite the fact that those ideas have been around for decades or generations. Unfortunately, due to bad judgement on my part, this was in response to a post by a newby. A bad decision on my part and unfair to a new person. But someone was able to impose hundreds of thousands of red reps as a result of this and I won't be able to post ever again without max red reps. I notified the mods but nothing changed other than some sympathy for the situation. I may have deserved the reps for that one post, but in the overall context of my posting history, I don't think it is deserved in perpituity.

I have a half a billion rep. You have -211k. And yet, both our rep bars look identical. Why? Because no one actually cares who has however many rep points. It's a stupid system that means nothing. Just forget the red rep, and move forward. :)

I looked through many of your posts and I didn't see anything to warrant that. You seem to be quite presentable.

Who is red repping you and what was the post? Are you being targeted by a few people? We need more facts here then maybe this can be corrected.

You're green again. You must have been hit with a red by a heavyweight.

A very good point. I shouldn't care, but I prefer not to have the credibility of every future post undermined by all the red reps. How's they do that anyhow? I wasn't red reped by hundreds of thousands of people.

I wouldn't let it bother you. If you only received 1 point for each green rep that would be different, but it seems like it's more like 10,000,000 for each. I have accumulated 487,783,091 rep points and I have no idea what that really means or how the points work.

I'm not quite sure how it works myself, but a couple of us green repped you and that did it. The more rep you have, the greater the impact when given out. You probably didn't have many greens and got red repped by a couple of heavyweights.

Anyway, carry on professor....

The more rep you have, the more rep power you have. Someone like JAM will have more rep power than me. I'm in pretty good standing though. I don't step on too many toes. Fkk it, I'll give ya a greenie.

If he got hit by a heavyweight it would be -11,000,000

You're right, he is safely in the green now.

Thanks. :) I'm good again.
Tate. Did you know I REALLY AM a professor?

probably explained pretty good by now

Thanks to all that pm'd. :)

The green rep you give is about one percent of your total rep. The red rep you give is one-half the green rep. There are a couple dozen people over two billion points and many many more not far behind. That means that somebody with few rep points can have their rep swing wildly with only a few people repping them good or bad. The green bar means nothing, the red bar doesn't make you a monster but it does make people a little more cautious about you. Seems like you are back in good shape, no big deal despite the huge bucket of red you were looking at. I only know of two forums where rep is delivered by the truck load and this is one of them!

Yes, I did from reading your previous posts. I agree that having red rep is analogous to having the scarlet letter. No matter what you say or do, all people can see is the red.

What subject and age group do you teach?

Hu, How can you tell how many rep points other people have. I haven't been able to find that anywhere? Not that it's all that important, just curious?
