Greensboro NC 10 ball Break and Run?

Gate City Billiards in Greensboro NC has a handicap 9 ball tourny every wed. night.
Pays about 200.00 and averages about 30 players. Not a bad little tournament.
I checked the website for past winners a couple weeks ago and I saw they have had 128 players the last couple weeks!!!!!!!! WTF They have had a Break and Run worth 1000.00 a ball and every player in the Carolinas has been there. A virtual whos who of pool players from that area. Strickland, Abernathy, Tony Watson, Scott Lewis Mike Fuller, Shannon Fitch BJ Ussury ect ect.

That being said I just heard that Gate City Billiards got ticketed for having this and was forced to stop the Break and Run???? Is this true and does anyone have the story on this? How can Break and Runs be illegal?

Is a game of chance. If it wasjust running balls it would be ok but the part that makes it illegal is that your name has to be drawn at random. Hope that helps
 
Exactly. The NC ALE frowns upon games of chance in establishments where alcohol is served. The ALE officer said she was responding to a complaint, meaning someone told ALE about this.


I pray no one ever finds out who "told" on Gate City. It would not end well for that person.
 
I guess if they had everyone who is entered in the drawing lag and the best lag gets to do the break and run. Maybe that would make it a skill game again, there has to be a way around it.

I have a Japanese slot machine at my house. Its a real slot machine like you see in a casino but because gambling is illegal in Japan (I am told) once you hit the spin button the reels will keep spinning until you push the stop button under each reel. This stops it being a game of chance and makes it a game of skill. Although the reels spin so fast u have almost no way of being able to know where it will stop. This is just a example of getting around certain rules.

I would imagine!

When a small tourny turns into a huge event like this I am sure it was great for the room and the players! Not to often in pool where weekly, players of this caliber get together in the same place. I bet it was great for all involved.
 
Who dunnit?

Maybe it was a neighboring biz that ratted it out? (surely not Dobros pizzeria tho).


Or maybe it was a disgruntled player.


Or maybe it was a wife, who's hubby was dropping baby formula $$ on the tickets.


Or maybe, just maybe, it was the Grinch who stole Christmas.


Regardless, what a shame. :mad:
 
The ALE Officer said it is illegal because of the raffle. However, without the raffle, the pot would have never gotten as big as it did. There are still plenty of other places running a Break & Run in NC. I hope they can keep it going as long as possible.

I do not know for sure who complained. I was told it was one of my competitors, but I don't know for sure. However, the explanation I got was that this Pool Room wanted to start a B&R of their own, but called ALE to make sure it was legal before they started, They were told it was not and then they asked why Gate City was allowed to run one then.

If that explanation is true, it's not nearly as bad as if they were just trying to stop us. Still, they didn't need to give them our name.

It's tough enough to run a liquor business in NC without Bar Owners making it more difficult on each other.
 
great room

Hate to hear such a great pool room has nasty competitors that would stoop to that level. That hurt the players in the area as well.You've got the best room in the area and when I go home to visit family its always nice to stop in for a while . Hang in there you have a great thing going.
