The SUN

Joey, how do you know your great play wasn't because of the 2 hour nap?

I don't for sure. You make a good point.

But I have taken two hour naps previous to other matches in the past year but have never stood up under fire this well.

I regularly take naps ranging from 30 minutes to two hours prior to playing at night.

I haven't resorted to sleeping all day and playing all night just yet but I have looked enviously at the road players who show up at midnight looking like they just got out of bed while I have been awake for the better part of 16 hours and they can't wait to start an ahead set with me.

You know I keep hearing about JohnnyA, CharlieW, ThorstenH, EarlS, CoreyD and MANY other professional players, playing golf and tennis. Those are two sports where you get a lot of sunlight.....

Just thinking.................

Squinty

Joey-

This is known in some circles as the 'squinty-eye' effect. The exposure to direct sunlight makes most nocturnal pool players squint.

That furrowed brow squint during that evening's play serves several purposes: It allows the eyes to focus only on the cb to ob path/to the exclusion of any 'sharky' surrounding visual distractions. It rattles the opponent when he realizes that you are a man on a mission. AND it intimidates the balls themselves-such that they dare not go in.

Squinty is good.

Efren uses squinty.

Jeez, Joey! Now everybody is going to be squinty. Dude! shshhhh.

Here's a little reading material for you to consider. It's just some information copied from one of the Internet sites touting Vitaming D..

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which is created by sun exposure. Its deficiency symptoms are depression, chronic fatigue, weight loss, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D is known as sunshine vitamin because it is created in the body when it is exposed to sunlight. If you are a vegetarian you should know that that type of diet can be low on vitamin D because it is commonly found in foods such as egg yolk, fish, fish oil, some cheese, beef liver and some types of grain.

Vitamin D is of out most importance for your body because its role is to help your body use the calcium and phosphorus from your food. It also regulates normal cellular differentiation thus preventing cancer and helps insulin secretion. Deficiency of this vitamin is connected to rickets.

This is a disease which affects your bones in way they don’t form properly because the calcium cannot be incorporated into them. So your bones lack minerals and that makes them fragile. This can cause serious skeletal deformities.

Causes of vitamin D deficiency can be different. Here are some of them:

You don’t consume recommended doses of this vitamin. In that case, change your diet. Start consuming foods that are rich in vitamin D. We have already mentioned the foods rich in vitamin D.

Limited exposure to sunlight can also be the cause. This is very easy to treat. Just go out more.

Your kidneys cannot change vitamin D into its active form. This comes with age. The older you get, the harder it becomes for your kidneys to do this process.

You are overweight. Vitamin D is absorbed by fat cells which can lead to low levels of vitamin D in your body. Loose weight because if you don’t your bones will become more fragile.

If you have dark skin, you should be aware that melanin in your skin reduces skin’s ability to produce vitamin D. Take a vitamin D supplement.

Since the color of my skin is close to that of a Vampire, I get my Vitamin D from the sun quite easily.

Chronic fatigue is a sympton of Vitamin D deficiency.... hmmm.
I have chronic fatigue after ten hours of playing pool whether I take a two hour nap or not.

sunlight

Some people are more affected by sunlight than others and vitamin D alone doesn't address the issue. UV lamps help but some of us simply need sunlight. Helps mood, energy, can make the difference between a little dull and sharp and alert. I literally need sunlight to function well.

I knew I should have got some sun yesterday before the tournament. Damn those rain clouds. I lose my first match against Jason A (big boy). He played good. I didn't play good enough.

However, both my road dog (Paul) and I are in the final 16 (they only had 48 players). Both previous memorial tournaments had 128 players. They didn't do any advertising and I think that's what caused the shortage of players. Going back today at 3:00. It's only an hour ride and we can sleep in our own respective beds. That's worth the one hour drive for sure. Maybe I'll try and get some sun between now and then.

I have to win 4 matches to get in the money and 7 matches (I think) to win the tournament. With the one loss side racing to three (eight ball) it won't be easy.

The big upside is they feed you home cooked food for two days and everyone is having a good time. Now, I will stay focused for 7 matches in a row.

Joey I think you may be on to something, I mow my mom's yard & mine on everyother Wednesday, I play a pool tournament on Thursday nights, so the Wednesday I mow the yard and get some sun that Thursday night I play great, have won or placed many times, ...........

now I have a tournament I play in on Tuesday nights, and have never won, only placed once, so maybe gettting some sun that day or playing soon after helps with eyes, focus, energy level, and overal well being.

Thanks for the advice...

You're not as dumb as you look!
Actually Joey gives us some inside info from time to time, maybe just as valuable as taking a deep breath before a difficult shot. One other little secret is that if you have to play an early match, get up early and exercise for thirty minutes or so (a brisk walk outside is good). You'll now be ready to play.

Hi there Jay,

I have alot of trouble playing that first match. Being diabetic it is difficult to get the blood sugar stable. I'm sure your advice on the excercise or a brisk walk will really help.

After all the of the main keys to managing your blood sugars is excercise.

I've had the mentality that I don't want to do too much because I want to save my a
energy for the whole day but what difference does it make if you lose the first match of the day because you don't feel right.

Besides if you lose that first match your not going to get much rest anyway in that losers bracket. Sometimes at some tournys you play in the losers bracket until 6:30 in the morning like in Mobile,Al a few weeks ago. In a tounament like that the losers bracket is almost a sure loser. Especially when you have to start playing again at NOON.

I think your words of wisdom are 100% right. Thanks

Yeah, I'm talking about the one in the sky.

Many years ago one of our best local players told me one of his "secrets" of playing pool well. (People are always telling me pool secrets. I don't know why but I guess I'm easy to talk to and they know I like to know the pool "secrets".)

This one is a little "out there" but it is one he shared very genuinely. Mike told me that he was a great shot maker because he spent more time in the sun than most players. He claimed that when he spent a few hours in the sun, that same day he could count on his game being picked up a notch, especially his ability to "see" the balls more clearly.

Now I know that we can obtain some Vitamin D from being exposed to the sun's UV rays and you can get a little more D from other sources but not that many.

The reason I wrote this thread is that I had an incredible match Saturday night where I played some of the best pool I have played in over a year. This came after spending several hours in the sun, taking a two hour nap and then starting the match. This brought back memories of Mike's words to me and while I often thought that he was one of those "far out" kind of guys, I was able to "see" the balls better than normal. I just wonder if the sun had anything to do with it or maybe it was the stars that had aligned themselves just right for me?
Any thoughts on this subject are appreciated. Has anyone ever heard anything similar to this?

And yeah, you can poke some fun at me if you like especially if it will make you feel better about yourself.

Perhaps it has to do with the eyes becoming acclimated to glare.

I don't know. I didn't get any sun this weekend and sure enough I didn't cash in a local tournament, as usual. I also didn't win any money gambling. My game sucks.

The GingerBread Man should be flying in to New Orleans to get some of this green.
