Hi Here is a old Butterfly I converted. Has to be close to 100 yrs old. I wanted to keep as much of the orriginal wood as possible so only added a 6" hard maple dowel and covered it with a lightly texured leather wrap. Feel real nice, the short handle looks and works just fine , in my opinion. So all the wood showing on the butt is close to 100 yrs old. I have shot several racks and the feel is Great. The cue has a Auto Clear coat finish .
