What type of shaft for a new player ??

My wife is interested in learning the game...

She has a McDermott with the original shaft, but I have a high performance shaft to fit it.

Is she better off learning to compensate for deflection first, and THEN introducing a performance shaft ?

Or should she start with the high performance shaft ?

Don't worry about deflection, just get her started on solid fundamentals for now.

She's got the fundamentals down. But she's a shot-maker, and not so much of a position player.

She wants to up her game. I'm debating on which shaft...

I revert to my answer. Let her choose.

You're right, 9BallMarksman, and that's what I'll do. My game improved when I switched to a high performance shaft. But as it's been said before here, it's what the player feels comfortable with.

Thanks. I'll let her try both and she can choose...

(And then that way I can't be blamed for anything later).

I doubt you'll get that lucky buddy. If she's anything like every other woman she'll find a way to blame you if it doesn't go right.

i learned to play with a LD shaft. i think it took a little time off my education. i still had to go back and relearn some stuff but i think it'll help.

get her the LD shaft

Hahahahahaha... I think I might be ok...

Quite a few years ago, we were looking for a second car, and we went down to the city municipal auction (I wanted one of the police cruisers). With two kids, we had about $1000 to spend, and all the cruisers went for considerably more than that.
Here's where I have to note that you take the car 'as-is'...
She spots a Ford Tempo... baby blue, four door, and it still has the adhesive remains of the city symbol on the doors. It's in ok shape, and she's 'examining' it while the auctioneer is at the car before it. And she wants me to bid on it. I tell her she'll have to drive it (I'm 6'7", so she's GOTTA drive it). She agrees, and the auctioneer gets to the Tempo...

"Let's start the bidding at $50, do I have any bidders ?"
I raise my tag while asking my wife, "YOU'RE driving this, right"
"Yes, I'll drive it."
Someone bids $100, and the auctioneer looks to me for $150. I raise my card again...
"Honey, how high do you want me to bid ?"
"... $300 ?"
Same guy bids $200. The auctioneer looks to me for $250. I ask my wife again, "You sure ?"
"YES !!!"
I raise my card at $250. He looks to the other bidder for $300, but that guy shakes his head no. And the auctioneer says into his microphone...

"SOLD to the tall gentleman standing in front of me here for $250. And sir, that was very smart of you to consult your wife at every bid, because if there's something wrong with that car, it's all on her... Next car up in the auction..."

I never let her forget that...

How about she learn how to shoot straight first ?

A beginner shouldn't worry about deflection. Concentrate on fundamentals, aiming, and only center, bottom, or top contact points on the cue ball and what they mean. Once the balls start going in the holes consistently then you may move on to side spin and how to use it......

The shaft doesn't play position, the player does. I would recommend that she learn how to play position using the vertical axis of the cue ball, before she starts spinning the ball with english. Fundamentals first. She can play a lot of position routes just using stop, follow and draw.

I see absolutely no reason for her to use anything other than what feels right for her. Personally I dislike LD shafts because they feel alien and for my game they do not seem to be LD, they play exactly the same as my regular shaft.

If she feels as or more comfortable using the LD let her use it.
