Has anyone had Paypal inquire about payments being made for your raffle?
They want me to tell them what they are for. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Maybe you could tell them that you are not collecting money, you are receiving gifts for a personal matter that you'd rather not discuss because it is very personal. If they press further, you are experiencing either a financial crisis or a medical emergency. Just some thoughts.

Thanks Pete.

Gift?

I personally think that we should stay away from that Gift or free paypal. I know nobody likes to pay paypal, but we need them and they have that 3% coming, just figure it into your cost of the item. I don't want people to send money to me as "Gift" or "Money Owed". I am willing to pay paypal the money I feel they have coming. This way I can say I am selling tips or small items period. Just my opinion.

Good point Tommie. When I send paypal as a gift, I get charged the 3%. I don't know if other people get this charge.

It is probably because you are paying as a "gift" using a debit or credit card. If you use a bank account, there is no fee by using "Gift"

Paypal is wise to raffles here on AZ, so they are probably asking a question they know the answer to already. Best to tell them the truth and preserve your account.

I have a feeling you're not getting out of it easily.. Hope I'm wrong..
Last year I received payment for a cue I sold from a well respected az member.
I could not transfer the funds to my credit card, while the other way around was never blocked when I transfered funds..
They asked me to provide several documents.
I did fax them whatever they asked.
Then they asked for other documents that did not ask for the first time..
I cancelled the transaction, and the az member had to send via wire transfer the funds.
A year passed, I continued making transactions without problems and now they have limited my access inquiring again after one year about that cancelled transaction!!
They asked me to fill in some more info in my account and I did!!
They asked me to fill again that same info and I replied that I have already done what they asked for!!
All this time it was like talking to a wall!!
When you call them you get answering machines and when you mail them you get replies from "John", "Marie", etc. Never received a single Surname though I asked for it!!
Last mail to them I required (instructed) them to close forever my account and leave me in peace!!
They haven't even done that!! And they haven't replied to my mail for the first time!!
Although I mentioned them I could take this to my lawer they haven't replied and I think why should I spent money and time about them?
So things remain still, with my account access remaining limited and my last mail without reply..
So finally az brothers, is there another similar way to use instead of them?
AND: WHO AND WHAT IS BEHIND PAY PAL AFTERALL???
Thanks everyone for your time.

I think we should try and find another way to pay. I know people mentioned GPal in the past. It would be much easier for all of us, if the majority of the regular raffle participants had an account with another company like GPal. It really is not worth the hassle of having to worry about PayPal freezing your account.

A few PayPal payments coming in is probably not a big risk, and it does not put up red flags. It is when there is 30 payments coming in at one time; most of them the same amount also. If I were to have a somewhat expensive raffle again, I would ask some of my friends on here to send me a money order. It is more of a pain in the ass, but it sure beats having PayPal on your ass.

Tommie is also right about people sending the payments the regular way. I usually send payments from my BlackBerry, and I do not think a fee is charged.

Good luck with everything!

When I have sent money as a gift it charges me the 3% and that is with my account linked to my bank account.

When sending $$$ through PP as a gift, both sending and recieving parties must have verified accounts in order to evade the 3% charge! When sending money as regular payments, PP doesn't care what they are for since they're getting their 3% cut. Tommie is right, only way to avoid PP for investigating one's transactions is to give them their 3% cut!!! I suggest you call customer service and tell them what craig said and state that the payments are personal debts people owe you. As for all the other payments, have everyone else send them as regular payments!

Really, are they concerned regarding the morals of raffles and gambling or are they just concerned that they may be missing out on their percentage charge? I think we would all agree it's just about their charge. Any payment I make for ANYTHING I buy using Paypal I am more than happy to pay the small percentage on my end. Unless the seller expressly states that his numbers are including the paypal fee I always take the hit myself, it just seems fair.

Now, maybe it makes more sense to add the paypal fees into the raffle total and just let everyone know to choose the option that takes the percentage for paypal, instead of the "gift" option... maybe that would get paypal off peoples cases. Just my thoughts on the matter. :)

We probably shouldn't even put our AZ screen name when we make

payments as they could be wise to those by now. Unless they have red flagged the

accounts used in the raffles already. The best way

to avoid this is to give Paypal the 3% and stop putting the

screen names up. I only play the raffles and wouldn't care if

I had to pay the 3% on my numbers played. JMO

Mr Vinnie B, please check my thread in the Non Pool Related section of Az forums, titled "SCREW PAYPAL"
you'll be glad you did
:)

Thanks for all the answers so far.
If I tell them that they are personal debts, what is the worse that they can do? I don't think that they can take the $ back. Maybe charge me the 3%?

You could PM those people that bought the tickets a simple how to manual. Maybe how to replace your own tip or something related to billiards. The price they paid would be for the purchase of the e-manual. You just gave the cue etc. to the one of the lucky first 46 customers that bought your manual. One of the members on here does this. But if they paid by gift instead of goods or services i really dont know.

The worst they can do is close your account and hold on to balance for few weeks. The best thing is to transfer all money to your account first if you can, and tell them you made a mistake and wont happen again. Next time use another account for this purpose.

It may be a hassle but have everyone send the money and do not put your screen name, or basically anything in the description. On the thread here list your email address that the money came from. As long as you don't have multiple raffles or are getting in $15 (for example) for other items you are selling you will be able to tell the money coming in is for the raffle. Of course some people don't pay attention to instructions on here :D.
