Sorry to interrupt your buying and selling, but I figure some of you guys must know.

What is the best way to ship a cue to Japan that needs to be insured for $5000?

USPS?
UPS?
FED EX?
Something different?

My experience with insurance is that FEDEX can be very tricky, they have something called "declared value" and if the object is damaged they may fight the claim or only allow what they see the value of the given item. We ran into this with a 8k projector.

I cannot speak to UPS, I have not ever had to use their insurance.

USPS seems to have the most straight forward insurance and generally pays off with appropriate receipts and paperwork.

I would PM Kamdaswani, he has a lot of experience with shipping to Hong Kong so he may have the best perspective for your question.

FedEx
Put the cue in a plastic sleeve then wrap with bubble wrap.
Seal the cue in a PVC tube.
Then put the tube in a FedEx triangular box.
Insure it for $5000

Honestly, for $5000, I think you need to go with a true international shipper like Nissin International Transport or similar.

I have shipped many cues valued at the $5000 limit, all USPS Express Mail International, and all arrived safely. Follow the USPS packaging guidelines, what Lee described is perfect, and ship it!

Remember, all insurance claims are handled by the shipper, dot your I's and cross your T's. Anything less can jeopardize your coverage.

I Would steer clear of the USPS for sure..

when shipping any cue go down to Home Depot and pick up some PVC tubing with end caps and you should be fine.

the last cue i shipped to germany using fedex vallued at 1500 i had no problem...there was just a little delay going through customs. make sure that you say that there is NO IVORY on it, even if there is !

the cue arrived in perfect condition inside the PVC !

Normal rate of customs duty in most asian countries is about 33%, i am not sure about japan, if japan has same tax structure than he will be charged 1500+ in duty. I think you can personally deliver at that price and still have some cash to stay there for few days.

I have used USPS, UPS and FedeX several times, baring minor issue twice i have never had a problem.
