Rumors about the WPBA

Is it true that your association wont or hasn't let its members play in other pool events? If so, Why?

I do know that an event must be sanctioned by the WPBA in order for its members to be able to play in it. I remember a year or 2 ago that Jasmin Ouschan was suspended for playing in a Word Championship event that the WPBA didn't sanction because it conflicted with one of their events.

Hope this helps.

So the only events that the WPBA sanctions are events that only ladies can play in? So in theory the WPBA can keep all of their members from playing any open events? How does this rule benefit pool or the WPBA?

They have sanctioned WC events their members have been invited to. I guess, in theory, the WPBA does have control over which events it will allow its members to attend, however the only times I have heard of the WPBA not sanctioning an event is when it conflicts with a WPBA Tour event.

I don't think so. I believe that the event must be sanctioned by the WPBA no matter when it is.

I agree its their organization and they can make any stupid rule they want. If their events are valuable, then their organization wouldn't have to rely on binding their members into contracts. Who would even want to agree to that? Maybe just make sure there are no scheduling issues. There are alot of days in a year. Sounds kinda like a dictatorial and sexist organization anyway.

Well, as I understand it, the players run the tour & make the rules, so they have only themselves to blame.

The Jasmin story was a big deal because the two events were conflicting... Look at it from a different perspective:

While it is not anything to speak of, the WPBA gets more viewers when their star players are there. They are expected to show up, so when they don't, their are some people who are less likely to watch (i.e. spend money). Rip me apart if you must, but look at all aspects before you call them out on it.

Ashley droppin' a knowledge bomb on our asses!!!:grin:

I recall several WPBA players playing in the IPT events.
There are several at the Women's 10-ball event.

Several of them have played on regional open tours for years.

I don't think it's a big issue.

There are a number of things involved in the WPBA decision making process.

1) Does the event conflict with a scheduled WPBA event (IPT did not).
2) Has a sanctioning fee and/or a guaranteed number of WPBA reserved slots been made (Amway Cup for example).
3) Is it a WPA or BCA event?
4) Is it just something the players are going to take part in anyway (Derby City).

Still seems like a dumb policy. Do they get sanctioned if they are sick and don't play in the WPBA event?

It is the WPBA, what else do you expect from them? Let's call a spade, a spade here. It is a poorly run organization dying a slow & painful death. The money is not there & the lack of events this year is a glaring example of it. Plus look at the watered down fields that have been there as well.

I agree with you Ash, there are legitimate reasons for the rule and I don't really know of any instances when the WPBA has been heavy handed or unreasonable. Hell, the PGA tour has similar requirements for it's members. Not that they can't play in something else without permission but they do have to play in a certain minimum number of events a year. Keep in mind that the PGA tour has an event every week for about 9 months out of the year. If the WPBA had a sufficient number of events it might choose to manage it similar to golf.

The WPBA has been around since around 1976.............ummmm what mens pool organization has lasted that long? Answer is none. Money is always tight in pool.
Watered down fields???? WTF you talking about ????

There are the top 48 exempted players and 16 new players......each year, any fill in players come from the regional tours.

No one is talking about men's pool, so anything about them is irrelevant.

Look at the fields from this year's events, they have been watered down. Why do you think so many invites were sent out to people who technically did not belong? Because they couldn't fill the fields.

It's a loaded question. Doesn't seem to be an issue given the Derby City Classic, the US Open 9-ball, and other events that the WPBA ladies have been playing in.

Fred <~~~ next question please
