This is shaping up to be a good one, maybe one of the best ever. I'm pretty jazzed because they asked me to come over this year. I plan to be a little more outrageous in my commentary this time, let it all hang out there. I won't hold anything back, that's my promise to you. I know York Hall will be rocking, and so will I!
Now for the match-ups - Team Europe first.
Mika Immonen - Absolutely one of the best tournament players anywhere today! Only Player Of The Year the last two years! What more needs to be said. Also would like to make amends for his below par performance last year.
Ralf Souquet - And here is the best tournament player of the last fifteen years! He is consistently near the top in every event he plays in. Never has a bad year, winning events in every year of his career. And big ones too!
Karl Boyes - Exciting, a bit flamboyant, and has a huge game. He has the confidence (tons!) and the game to beat anyone at any time. That's how good he is! Only a world champ this year to boot!
Darren Appleton - At the peak of his game right now. One of the best players on the planet, able to stand up against anyone! A proven winner, he knows how to get the job done.
Nick Van den Berg - Flies under the radar for the most part, but always manages to finish high. Still young, but a veteran of many years playing top level competition. One very courageous player, with no back down in him.
Pretty awesome line-up for Team Europe. Now what chance do the Americans have?
Team USA.
Shane Van Boening - SHANE! SHANE! SHANE! What's your name, name, name? Maybe pool's most electrifying player today, with a huge game and immense popularity everywhere he goes. Pool fans love Shane worldwide!
Johnny Archer - Mr. Reliable! America's best player for twenty years now, and still at the peak of his powers. He never fails to bring his "A" game to any event. Count on Johnny to win points.
Dennis Hatch - The lifeblood of Team USA last year. It was his enthusiasm that lit up his team mates and buried Team Europe. Plus he played the best of anyone for four days! Big Game could be his middle name.
Rodney Morris - Mr. Cool! Never flustered, always calm, Rodney is the eye of the hurricane. Steady and not flashy, but with all the weapons that make a great player. He makes it look so easy, the way he two strokes everything. On top of his game right now too!
Corey Deuel - Only the most wily and creative player alive today. He can find a way to win when it looks impossible. I predict that Corey, who is now a veteran, will be the inspiration for Team USA if they can win this one. If anyone can turn things around, it's the cagey Deuel!
So that's it, almost too close to call. Team Europe has a big advantage with home field, but I don't see Team USA getting flustered by it. These are solid veteran players who are used to playing under pressure. Team USA is the defending champs, winning as underdogs last year. And, if anything, I think they have a stronger squad this year. A little more cohesive and all are playing well currently.
Bottom line - All ten players are on top of their game now, so I'm looking for a very exciting 2010 Mosconi Cup, that might go right down to the wire. Let's hear what you have to say.
