best in canada

Well growing up in Ireland and only following snooker I would have to say Thorburn but I tell you Kirk Stevens match against Jimmy White in the 1984 masters was one of the best ever!! Also I did take a few beers off big Bill Weruniuk when I was 18 playing in the UK juniors in Harrogate way back in 1990. As for pool, I don't know but I did see Bob Chaperon playing in some Joss tourneys a few years ago -- another real good Canadian player. Wow a lot of great players have come out of that little country tucked away down there!
i think some of the Bears john or jimmy played there, also tom finstead fr edmonton played over there, bill would drink alot of beer during matches, some condition he had,tom is still a good snooker player

let me take a guess, they would be from the east?

The next time I see Tyler or Edwins name on a tournament sheet, I'll be sure to keep track of how well they finish. Hows that sound? :) Havent seen their name on any sheets recently, how can we judge how well they're playing.

Id say its probably Erik Hjorleifson right now in the number 3 spot.

How bout old jumpin joe lawrence...I remember he had a pretty strong gear..He was telling me one time years ago how he tortured Mark Jarvis when Mark was in his prime...was a funny story how he told it...I heard him talking bout their match and i said man you must have not missed a ball..I watched Mark practice banking and he mighta only missed 2 banks in about a hour...Joe says...Man that Mark banks like God..never misses a bank...it's unbelievable...But it's kinda hard to bank when you froze behind the 2.

I played in a bar box league with joe lawrence last year...He told me Johny archer gave him that nic name "jumpin" If u ever seen joe break you know he jumps forward an up, when he was playing archer he cracked his head on the lights over the table and archer called him jumping joe.

Who would you put your money on in a money match? Edwin or morra?

Glad to hear he's still around..havn't heard his name in a few years...I know he had a pretty sporty gear when he was in his prime.

How is there name going to be on many sheets when Western Canada has no tournaments and the ones in the East do not pay enough to justify a $700 return plane trip and $400+ in a hotel and cab rides?

The fact that you have your local little pool scene and it gets those certain players who live within 200km is logical. What is not logical is assuming that those guys showing up for those events and winning them means they are clearly the best players in Canada.

Edwin proved enough for anyone without your extreme bias during the Canadian Tour. Now it is toast and there is no way for the players in the West to compete in any decent events.

Not that Edwin is not trying by offering Morra a 10k straight up match in 10-ball, but Morra does not want to fly across Canada for a chance at 10k. Hmm that sounds friggin familiar, I wonder if that is why Edwin and Tyler quit playing tournaments when they were all in the East and normally paid way less then 10k for first.

Want to know why Western Canada is not equally represented in this country in this sport? Read this thread.

And now imagine yourself as a player in the West and having to deal with a guy who has the control over the official national qualifiers and has the attitude of

I could care less what a bunch of "shortstops" think of the qualifying process in Alberta or any other province. I love these guys talking game as big bar box specialists....lmfao...learn how to play.

And to be honest, I focus on promoting Snooker....thats my goal.

Yep, thats the guy who is sanctioned by the CBSA to market and set up the Alberta tournaments for Canadian qualifiers. And he could not give a rats ass about pool.

All of that said you think the East dominates? The one time a tour actually became fairly equally spread across the country Edwin was player of the year and Tyler was in second place in that same friggin year. But Edwin or Tyler in the top 3 in Canada? Oh heck no, I watch Morra play each week at Joes Fish and Chips and Billiards and he shoots really well. When was the last time Edwin dominated a Canadian tour? 3 years ago, almost the last year that tour existed? Pfft, what did he do last week, did not see him at Joe's Fish and Chips playing Morra!

I used to watch Cliff Thorburn playing snooker in Toronto and he always beat Bobby Trod the champion from my home town

Ya he shoots pretty good pool thats for sure! They put a new rule in the league just to keep him out lol He was good for 3 ero's in 5 games every time he played. He's very chirpy at the table too and gets upset easily also.

He said he started playing again after a 10 year or so layoff to see if he still enjoyed playing and said he was going to play some stick in new market and that he had a backer? I haven't herd from him since the beginning of the summer when they closed the bar he hung out at, the simcoe hotel in dtown barrie.

If you like to hear stories hes good for that, all you have to do is buy him beers an he will chat your ear off :) He bragged how earl was never able to beat him and how he would get earl pissed off when they played, he used to hustle down in the states with buddy hall as his backer since know one new him etc.

People are saying Edwin is the favourite, Id take some odds on the money or a few games on the wire and donate on Johnny I guess.

If you add up the totals for both John and Edwin on ONLY the Canadian 9 Ball tour, who had more? Seems Edwin is a bit ahead but I wouldnt say that he dominated the whole tour.

The reason that all of those players live within 200km of each other is simple, they have opportunity to make a little bit of money every week. I dont think that Jason and Erik would just leave home for Toronto (very high rent/housing) if there wasnt a reason.

But, I'll stick with who I think is in the top 3 and leave Edwin and Tyler out. I could be totally wrong and maybe I am bias based on where I live and how often I see these guys play. When we see Tyler and Edwin's names show up at events like Turning Stone or US Open 9 ball or Derby City, then Im more then happy to adjust my list. :)

Im glad to see all the replies to my thread keep them coming its good to see that there is still pride in this great country and right now jason klatt by way of his results is number 1

Maybe he should wear a helmet when breaking lol.

Here is what I think. Its like trying to compare SVB with Mika or Dazz or Ortman or Earl or Reyes. I think there is a level of play that is reached and a few can hold that spot. I would say that up here its the same.

Hey Celt, how would you put your money on? Edwin or Tyler? Id have to say Tyler. Any one counting Edey out is silly.

Everyone is saying Edwin would be the favourite. I like the underdog every now and then, why not bet on Morra?

Just because I happen to think he's a bit better doesnt mean anything, Im just a hacker who cant make three balls in a row, what do I know anyways?

No, you said very clearly in this thread that you think Morra is flat out a better player, one of the top 3 in Canada while you think Edwin is not. Thus you should be willing to bet it even.

Having trouble keeping up with your own posts?

Tyler is doing a engineering degree I believe atm so neither one is putting the time into the game anymore they used to. At the time Edwin started playing less and Tyler started putting huge hours in I do think Tyler got an edge on him, but that was Tyler playing heaps and Edwin not playing as much. Now with neither one playing much I don't have a clue. If they were both to enter a tournament right now in Calgary with a calcutta I think Edwin would draw a slight bit more cash, we will see if they both play in Medicine Hat this weekend.
