This is why Pool is COOL...

Hitting the balls so they roll right is the most satisfying feelilng I can experience. I can pull it off maybe once in 5 tries and it's just a blast when I know I stroked it right... just like Buddy would. :groucho:

It's the window to someones personality.
It's a game/sport that is equal to both sexes.
Pool in a pool room is like a flock of birds, all watching others as they preen and do their thing within a confined area.
It's the great ''detacher'' from life and work.
IT'S ALWAYS DIFFERENT...............................................................

It parallels life in all aspects, the good, the bad, the cheats, crooks, givers, takers it's random and nothing is predictable.

It' kinda like a new date each time you visit.

pool is cool because:

I can go to the derby city classic and ride in the elevator with, ask for autographs from, talk with, etc.. The best players in the world. You can't do that with many other top athletes/stars.

I tell everyone this who bad mouths pool. I tell amateur golfers they will nevaaaaa play against tiger woods. Amateur b'ball players, you will nevaaa catch an alley opp from lebron james. Amateur tennis players you will neva play a set against nadal. Of course unless, its a charity event or something!!(man, that dont count, stop it!!) Any given sunday, if I get the right(wrong) draw, I could play a world champion!!! Talk about a thin line!!!:-) But this is what we do!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peace

Love it! Now I'm stuck with some great images in my mind. You know that if this ever does happen, we are going to need videos. Thanks for this - i'll probably be grinning the rest of the day.

We're coming to an agreement that if I have to sacrifice my work hours to accommodate him playing pool, then he should sacrifice some of his hours to take ballroom dancing lessons with me.

I love to dance, always have. When I was younger, we used to practice routines and go to church/school dances. People would actually circle around us while we were dancing our practiced routines. I have won a couple of dance contests during the Motown era. The dances that were popular were bump, the horse, the monkey, the alligator, the penguin, tighten up, four corners, swing dancing. We did it all, and we were good.

He is just going to have to indulge me a little with my ballroom dancing fetish if I have to sit in the pool room all night and sweat him in action.

I got the best of it, though, because, as the title of this thread says, pool is cool when you're sitting on the rail watching two action players going back and forth in a close game of one-hole. Love that! :smiling-heart:

Why Pool is cool

I can play any time i fell like it 24/7 . also i can play when i get old , what , oh i am allready old , but i can still play 24 / 7 .

The only time pool is cool for me is when I see my Baby Cakes running the table. I love sitting on the rail watching him dance around the table. He is poetry in motion, and *the* only reason I'm even involved in pool today.

I have been trying to get him to take ballroom dance lessons with me as an alternative to pool, but he doesn't want any part of it. You can take him out of the pool, but you can never take the pool out of his heart.

I love him so. I cannot imagine my life today without him in it.:grin-loving:

Da*n it how did my wife get to find out about this Forum. She's been trying forever to get me to take Ballroom Lessons and I will admit I am not too fond of the idea. 'B' if that isn't you why is someone else posting our story who have you been talking with ?

Pool is cool because although I haven't been playing that long (less than a year) I have met some of the top players (both Men and Women) in the World and every single one of them has been fantastic. None of them mind talking with you or signing Autographs for my wife, I love that I found Pool but hate that I found it so late. I have also made some great new friends and it gives me hours of pleasure away from work. It has also given me a target to work towards, to be as good as I can at the game, but also keeps me grounded as someone will always kick your butt occassionally.

I have a reputation (deserved or otherwise) of being negative. I like to think I just present 'both' sides of an opinion.. be that as it may here is my questions...

If there are 80+ replies to 'This is why pool is DEAD", lets see if there are 80+ replies about 'This is why pool is COOL'

- I cannot think of any other game/sport that is so gratifying when played well.

- the sounds of balls clicking on a table make my head turn every time.

- some of the nicest people I have ever met, I met when playing pool.

- Pool (like most games/sports) develops character

- Pool (like most games/sports) also displays character

of course there is more.. why do you like playing?

you can't show up to a bar for a weekly checkers tournament!!!!!!!

My two cents....

Pool is cool because it connects me with my boyhood, just as fishing and bicycling do. My high school (Denver East) sat just across Colfax Avenue from York Billiards, a mob-owned room teeming with all levels of scoundrels and gentlemen. My book learning suffered, but my street smarts helped me plenty later in life.

That was nearly a half-century ago, but I enjoy playing today just as much as I did as a kid. I don't shoot so straight anymore, but I'm working on it.

And pool is cool 'cause I can do it alone, just me vs. the table, or seek out human competition in the pool hall.

This forum is pretty much a virtual pool hall.

I will give my reasons why I like pool. I like it cuz I can drink, smoke, cuss, gamble, stay out late and chase muff all while I am doing a so called sport. God bless America and pool!

Pool is cool for me because of the numerous angles and other aspects of geometry and physics involved in shotmaking and position.

Another reason pool is cool is the people you meet- from all walks of life. Everyone from doctors and lawyers to drawbridge oilers. Used car dealers to presidents of the local toe banks. The list goes on.

Pool is also cool for me because of the opportunities (on-line included) to help and be helped when/where needed, e.g., when I needed advice on placing a Diamond nine-footer in my basement (purchase is still in committee).

more Cool things about Pool,

For me;

seeing the pride on a player's face when they CASH in a tournament for the first time.

seeing the C- players progress to B and then B+ skill levels.

Shaking hands with a player that won his first tournament and it was on his birthday. We still talk about that and it was almost 6 years ago. BTW, he hasn't repeated that honor since, but has finished in the finals quite a few times.

Getting to a Pro tournament and seeing how the Pros play the game. I suggest that any player make a trip to see the Pros. The game, being played by the Pros is really something to watch.

Cues deserve a whole thread themselves. I currently have two Pete Ohmen cues and a 1987 Meucci Original Road Agent.

I've always enjoyed the game. Never really had the time or inclination to take it up again until I retired. But its really been fun and I enjoy it immensely. My son really enjoys it too. Which is great. Wish I had the room for a table at home. Someday maybe. So for me pool is cool!

- Because you can choose your equipment based on looks and technology; you can play the game with a basic stick or a work of art!

- Because every walk of life is represented. In my league I've had doctors, lawyers, insurance agents, bricklayers, carpenters, sales people, hookers, politicians, the CEO of a bank and the President of Richmond Raceway. And that's not half of the group and all because they love to play the game.

- Because it's allowed me to meet all these different people over our common love of pool. And the ones that play the game over many years recognize that it's one of the perfect games!

Pool for me is waking up at four in the morning with a solution to a
1-pocket or 3-cushion problem....but as they say in the military...
..'the map is not the terrain'....so you get dressed and go to an
all-night pool hall to prove or disprove it.

Pool for me is like joining a club...where the dues you pay aren't
necessarily monetary.

..Playing 3-cushion to 25 for a $100 in a small mid-west town...
..everybody's gathered round the table 'cause this is serious action
for this burg...I play a shot 3 rails and miss by 8 inches...a retired-
looking guy (but dressed in a good suit)jumps out of his chair and
points acusingly at the table and says "THE SHOT'S NOT THERE!!!"
..I say the table's not heated,I tried to check it but there was nothing
left on the ball on the third rail.....He rubs his chin and says..."That
could work."
The whole room starts laughing and my opponent says "Will you STFU
I'm down 13 to 4 here."
We laugh even harder.......

:cool::cool::cool:POOL IS EXTREMELY COOL:cool::cool::cool:

Pool is one of those games, like golf, in which you can strive for and achieve excellence but never perfection. While one may become a master at pool, the game itself can never be mastered. As one becomes more skilled, improvement becomes more difficult and is measured in smaller and smaller increments, yet still we persevere.

There is something about this pursuit that attracts men and women of a certain character.

Introducing my friends to pool and then they become regulars and purchase cues and play in leagues and sometimes tournament. They now have an additional reason to get out of the house every week and enjoy themsleves.

that is Cool.

Pool is Cool... last night our weekly B player tournament drew 46 playes. It is $5 a pop Single elimination and just a race to 4.

The 7 year record is 43 players in one night, last night's record was a very pleasent surprize. We got finished around 1230am with an exciting Hill-Hill match.

Hard Times Billiards added $75 to the pot making it a total of $305

16 players got paid 9th-16 got $10 5th-8th got $15, 3rd and 4th got $24 and second got $45 and first got $70

This is why pool is COOL.

That is a very nice event. When I lived in Sacramento the one thing I noticed about Sacramento Pool was all the Room Owners worked in a Single Direction, worked with one another, they realized it was beneficial to work together. I recall one day being in Terry Place's on Fruitridge Road, and he had flyier's for another room event in a few weeks.
