question about shaft length

greetings, I'd like to preface this by saying I'm decently tall (about 6'3) and i currently play with a standard size 314-2 shaft. I've always been curious though about trying a longer 314-2 and i was wondering if it would be a noticable difference and if the extra length of the shaft would effect the feel? is it possible that the shaft would be whippier at all? any information would be greatly appreciated and thanks.

i assume u have played with a standard length cue all your life? my advice would be to stick with it, esp if you have played a lot. yet, as ambiguous as it sounds, considering your height, a longer cuw probably would serve you better in general.... it may even be worth considering just for reach shots, that extra inch means a lot. id just be more concerned with what you are used to, that is just me though.

it's not the length , it's the stroke . . . .

I told my girlfriend I was getting an inch of added length on my shaft , and she was ecstatic !

i have been playing with a standard shaft, but I've only been playing for about 2 years and i've only recently started to play seriously. i'd like to try out as much as i can before i'm too set in my ways, but I'm also young and by no means overflowing with cash so I'd like to find out as much as possible before i commit to buying.

I bought an OB-1 shaft 2" longer than stock for one of my Vikings. It was OK, but I couldn't seem to get comfortable shooting withe the extra 2" on all shots. I believe Chris B. uses an extended shaft on his custom cue. He seems to do well with...but a CB i'm not. He could beat me with a 48" cue. Johnnyt

I'm also 6' 3". I play with a 30" predator shaft, and have been for about 5 yrs. Before that, I played with 29" predator shafts, again for about 5 yrs. I definitely notice the extra inch. I don't have any negative affects on my game. The longer predator shaft is only about $20 more from the online retailers.

I'd actually like to try a total cue length of 61 to 63 inches, but I never got around to it.

When you first switched, did you notice any difference in the hit or deflection?

thanks for the replies everyone

No, I did not notice any difference in hit or deflection. In fact, I still occasionally play with the 29" shaft as a backup when my tip is off my main shaft, and I play the same with it. Just the whole cue will fall out of my hands sometime at the end of my follow through due to its shorter length.

I'm just an average player... maybe a better player would notice a difference.

I think the place to ask is over in the Ask a Cue Maker part of the forum. I thought of buying one an inch longer and I still may. My reason is the extra added inch for reach. I think it will add a slight bit more flex but will hardly be noticeable.

Years ago I took an inch off a shaft and it killed the shaft. It was a stiffer dead feeling. Working the c/b was an effort. I think you being a newer player adding an inch will not be a big deal but as I said ask a cue maker to make an informed decision.

I have played with 59" cues for years. I started out with just a standard length but with a 30" shaft. The only difference will be that your cue will be more balanced forward, which isn't really a bad thing.

My main player is a scruggs with a 30" predator 314-2 and it is an excellent setup, IMO.

It helps me in reaching those long stretch shots while providing no real apparent downside.

With the additional inch, the balance will be slightly affected (more toward the tip), however, for me it's barely noticeable.

I am 6'4" with 35" arm span....I play with a 62" John Bender , its a split 31" and 31" . I could not be more pleased.

I could not go back to a 59" if I wanted to as I have tried friends cues and they just don't work anymore. I have a 30" OB shaft that fits on my butt as well and it makes a difference going down the inch.

Prior to the Bender I played with a standard butt with a 30" shaft and it made a huge difference I would recommend trying the 30" shaft and seeing how it works for you and you may find yourself going to a longer cue but be aware the longest the LD shafts come in is 30". You can buy a blank and have one made around 30 1/4-30 1/2 but thats pushing it.
