CSI has announced the 12th US Open One Pocket Championship, to be held May 13-15 2011 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The $25,000 Added US Open 10-Ball Championships will be held immediately after the One Pocket (May 16-21). Both events are being held in conjunction with the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships. You may read the full press release here: http://www.azbilliards.com/2000storya.php?storynum=8206. This will now be an annual event.

The 12th US Open One Pocket Championship is $10,000.00 added. Entry is $340.00 (including $40.00 registration fee).

It is still in the early stages of planning and the following criteria has been tentatively set (subject to change).

Field Size: 32 players (may open up to 48 depending on response).
Race to 4 on winners side/race to 3 on loser side
Final: 1 race to 5
Equipment: Diamond Pro-Am tables with 4.5" pockets with 860 Simonis Tour Blue

Because this is the US Open title, CSI would like to send an 'Invitation' to noteworthy One Pocket Players, but there isn't any rankings for One Pocket Players. So, CSI is asking YOUR help for suggestions for the invitee list.

This event is not Invite Only - and will be open to ALL players - Men & Women. The Invitation is a courtesy to deserving players, and those who have performed well in past events; this is to prevent them from being shut out. However, invitation does not reserve a spot, it only gives the player a certain period of time to accept or decline, then the field will be opened. The interest has been very high so it is possible that the waiting list will fill up the whole field after the invited players have made their decision.

FYI – both events have obtained WPBA recognition, and will be streamed by TAR. The 10-Ball is a BCA points event.

So, fire away. Who do you think should be on the list? Better yet, who do you want to see in the final?

Sunny, I would guess that for the "US Open" you could easily fill a 32 man field with well deserving invitees. I know there are table and time constraints, but if there's going to be any "Open" part to the event, you'd almost *have* to go to at least a 48 person field. Even then you'd probably have a waiting list. You are advertising this event well enough in advance that people can plan, so you're going to get a good response, IMO.

Should be a LOT more than 32 players, but, I'm just happy that promoters put events like this together so won't argue :)

Lou,

Thank you. I couldn't agree more. We have several months to gather suggestions and ideas to make this event a great one. That is why I posted the thread here - to pick the brains of experts ;)

It would be great to fill 48! and it is manageable with the schedule.

Keep the ideas & names coming.

Is this an open tournament or invite only? Johnnyt

Johnnyt,

It is Open, however, there are few One Pocket Greats that we would like to extend the courtesy of RSVP'ing to the event before all the spots get filled.

US Open One Pocket

Hey Lou,

If my memory is correct, I think we got 62 players back in 2004 for the first time I did the One Pocket. That was the largest field we ever got. It was at the Plaza (Las Vegas) and we also held a Bank Tournament and the amateur 9-ball event.

Future events hovered around high 40 to mid 50 players.

The entry was usually $200 (with a $25 registration fee). This entry is $340 and I will quite happy if we fill the field.

We don't have the time or tables to have a bigger field this year. But we are getting a lot of response. And this is going to be an annual event from now on.

I am thinking this in going to be fun.

Sunny was asking me the other day how we are gong to make sure the 'right' players get in. So I said ask AZ (and One Pocket.org) to suggest the players they would like to see - then we can ask them. After that it will be open to the waiting list.

No sign-ups until after we put together the list and get to ask them - probably around late January.

I hope everyone puts up their best picks.

i think if u held the event somewhere else besides vegas it would be great or possible make the derby 1 hole the us open

Filling the field with 32 players would be like predicting it will be hot next summer in Las Vegas, ESPECIALLY with $10,000.00 ADDED MONEY.
This is a quick list of at least 32 mentionables.

Alex Pagulayan
Billy Incardona
Brandon Shuff
Buddy Hall
Charlie Williams
Chris Bartam
Cliff Joyner
Corey Deuel
Danny Harriman
Darren Appleton
Donnie Mills
Earl Strickland
Efren Reyes
Francisco Bustamante
Gabe Owen
Glenn Rogers
Grady Mathews
Ike Runnels
Jeremy Jones
John Schmidt
Johnny Archer
Jose Parica
JR Gay
Landon Shuffett
Larry Nevel
Max Eberle
Mika Immonem
Mike Dechaine
Mike Davis
Mike Sigel
Niels Feijen
Nick Varner
"Ozzieman" Dominguez
Richie Richeson
Ronnie Wiseman
Scott Frost
Shane Van Boening
Shannon Daulton
Shawn Putnam
Sylver Ochoa
Stevie Moore

If opportunity presented itself, I would even play in this event but I would have to know early on if I were allowed to play.

If anyone were lucky enough to knock me out of the tournament, :D I would even consider doing some commentary.

I think you have to give personal invites to these players. They have meant so much and mean so much to the game.

There could also be a pre-tournament warm-up, grudge match between long-time fans of the game, GingerBread Man and Joy Boy.

Mark, well... you would know better than me, but didn't you just do it twice? Once at The Plaza and once in Louisville? I remember up in Kalamazoo, towards the end, they were getting 64 and a waiting list -- you could easily sell your spot to a number of folks dying to get in.

But the thing with Kalamazoo was that you knew it was a regular thing -- fore-casted a year out. And they had plenty of tables and it was just a weekend event. You've got a good start on the forecast part, but if you start going through the rigmarole or compiling a list of invitees, figuring out how to reach them, and waiting for their response (and their entry), you're going to put this way behind the power curve for the wannabees that you need to buy the $99 SW tickets *now* and fill out the field (see Joey's post).

One udder thing, and this is just my opinion and I know there may not be much you can do about it, but I have to speak up anyway: if it's to be "THE US Open," then a race to three on the loser's side is wrong. I know, I know: not enough tables and not enough time. But there's something wrong about that, IMO. If you're going to ask people to put up a bigger entry (and registration fee) and have most fly out to Vegas, get a room and the rest: they should be guaranteed their 8 games. Of course: if you're shooting for a small field anyway, it probably won't make any difference.

Put Allen Hopkins on the list IMO. Still playing world class pool everyday!

Good list there. Just off the top of my head, there are a few others who came to mind. Nick Vita(he won before) and Billy Palmer(one of a very few that has beat Efren at DCC). Of course there are probably a few that I am missing also.
