Mike Sigel Launches New Website

No "dubya dubya dubya" needed

Thank you Jenny!

Just as an aside (from someone with deep roots in the industry -- an Internet backbone guy, if you will), you *do* know that you don't need to put "www" in URLs anymore, right? You can just say, http://mikesigelbilliards.com/ as a valid link. (I say this, because even though the "face" of your URL says merely "MikeSigelBilliards.com", the underlying link has "www" in it.)

The old "dubya dubya dubya" jargon / "requirement" is long gone. The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) has been trying to kill-off the "implied requirement" of the dubya-dubya-dubya stuff for several years. It was never a requirement in DNS (Domain Naming System) to have a dedicated "www" host for a website, either. You'll notice in TV & radio advertisements they always say "...just go to [or click on] MyGreatProduct dot com". You almost never hear "dubya dubya dubya" mentioned in these ads anymore.

But alas, I guess "old habits die hard" and people will be typing these unnecessary four extra characters (i.e. the "www" followed by a ".") for a long time to come.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful,
-Sean

I did not know that. In times gone by, I could *not* access my industry organization with a dot-org ending unless I typed "www-dot" before their website name.

After reading your post, I just went and tried it, and you're right. Wow! Thanks. I learn something new every day!

Very helpful. Every keystroke I can save, in a way, is another penny in my pocket. :grin-square:

Mike Sigel is so enterprising. I really admire his business sense. Whenever life throws him a curve-ball, he comes back swinging harder. That is why he's elevated to where he's at today. He's aware he can't make money in tournaments, but he's still able to use his passion for pool as a way to earn a living, much like Varner and Hopkins and Lee.

Sean,

Just curious as I am no expert but if that is the case, and I'm not trying to argue, just wondering why the following site requires the www..

The page does not come us as http://fsb.muohio.edu

but it does come up as http://www.fsb.muohio.edu/

Inquiring minds want to know that's all.. Sounds like you know the field a lot better than I..

Thanks, JoeyK

Joey:

There are always exceptions to the rule. If the DNS administrator doesn't know any better, he/she will hard-code a "www" host in their domain tree. But that's not the way to do it. That's like "pinning" the name to a particular IP address, even though that IP address serves more than just web pages. E.g. say, for example, let's say a site has a load-balanced server cluster that provides more than just "www" -- it provides live-streaming, FTP, etc. So we're going to create individual and separate "www.", "ftp.", "mms.", ...etc hosts, all pointing to the same IP address? That's silly. Why not just have the domain-name itself pointed to that IP address, and the URL (i.e. the "http:"/"ftp:"/"mms:" part) dictates what service you want? There are other reasons as well which I won't get into here (it is a Mike Sigel website thread, afterall -- and we're really off-topic), but that's a basic example.

So in brief, that particular example you show is because the site administrator is not up to date in current industry practices. (And that's odd -- because the IETF has been trying to kill-off the "implied requirement" of dubya-dubya-dubya for at least several years.)

Anyway, I hope that helps!

Thanks for the explanation Sean. I really appreciate it, and will pass it on to our webmaster.. He should be informed but apparently is not.

Have a great weekend!

I never understand why people post a site 'under construction or coming soon' links. Why not wait or don't add the hyperlinks?

The website works for me.

I wonder if it is a browser compatibility. I run into that all the time.

I use IE. Most people use Fox.

Seems like it already need to be updated. I found this passage in his about me link.

"August of 2005 has brought Sigel out of full retirement to Play Professionally for the International Pool Tour; at the World Championship in Las Vegas to win the tournament and take home $150,000.00 . His focus today is to play and promote the new tour."
