Before you post - Are You a Real Mechanic?

No Rob, you can't go on that list of Rick's until you become a "yes" man...because in the last pictures of your work I saw....you were a "NO" man....because unlike everyone else...."NO" you CAN'T use a belt-sander....and all "YES" men can:D...so, I'd say you'd have to re-apply with new pictures of some belt-sanding work that qualifies you to be a "YES" man..."YES"....you can now use a belt-sander:D:p because if I were the "police" in the mechanics industry....I'd have wrote you a ticket for "SWD"........OH...that stands for "Sanding while DRUNK"...:p

Glen

Hello Glen, next time you are back home stop by, I would like to get certified as real mechanic like you guy's, I just hate not being part of a club where you can't post unless you one of the crew. I will buy the beer, so you have something to do while I work under your watchful eye, hell I will even order Pizza.

Take Care Glen, I hope all is well and that you have a great and profitable Holiday buddy!!!!!!!!

Resume

Does this mean I have to post up my resume with references in order to post here?:grin:

Let me try to simplify this thread for you -
If you don't work on pool/billiard tables don't post as if you do.
Nothing wrong with sharing an opinion as long as it's stated as a non-mechanic opinion.
Too many folks happen to drop in this neck of the forum and post incorrect information which
is a disservice to other members.

I still like the idea of the blood/urine sample... I have mine ready to send in so I can keep posting :)

Send it in but be advised that if it doesn't have traces of 3M adhesive and bondo dust we're gonna have a big problem. :D

What about ear wax and Elmers school glue? That work? :)

I just laid out where my table is going using 3M blue painters tape... Does that help on the 3M side? :)

I think I qualify. Let's leave it at that.

Good for you.
Since you used to deliver Bwick tables I'm sure we will all look forward to the knowledge you will be contributing to this part of the forum. And by looking thru your post history it appears you're also a whiz at cues so I'd bet the folks in Ask the Cuemaker would also welcome your expertise.

That is the type of response I expected

We attack what we do not know, understand, or what makes us uncomfortable. It is amazing how you have my history down to just a few posts. I guess 1 Brunswick response constitutes a resume in your eyes. Funny how I never once said I was a cue expert, I guess I need to go back and reread my posts if that is what you gather. I am flattered that you did look them up though.

I guess I should explain why I have a problem with the origin of this thread.

When we deny the right of people to post in a forum, we deny ourselves the chance to gain knowledge, wether it be good or bad. We should be stewards of the billiards world and not bashers of those that do not know. Yes, some of the posts have issues and are wrong, this is the time to step in and correct the issue. I would not expect you to buy a car from 1 post no more than I would expect someone to try and fix their table after 1 post. I would expect someone to do their homework and look at how gathered information applies to their issue.

I have gained knowledge from numerous people through the years on how to work on a table that were not table mechanics. I worked with cabinet makers that knew more about wood and why it acts the way it does than I will ever know. I have set up tables for engineers that were far more intelligent than I. I have set up tables for pro pool players that knew how to play and how a table should act, but could not set it up themselves if their lives depended on it.

I have taken tips and tricks from all of these people and none of them were considered a table mechanic.

If you deny them a chance, the people will revolt instead of learn.

Ideas are the key to growth. Even a bad idea can spark a good idea. Have we always done things right the first time? I doubt it. To stop someone from offering up and trying to help is not a way I want to go through life. Billiards has been in the back rooms and back alleys for way too long and part of the problem is this mentality of defeating them before they ever get started.

So now I have said my peace and I know you, or anyone else for that matter, may not agree, but it is my opinion and I am entitled to it. So now go ahead and say what you will, I can take the lumps.

Maybe I missed something but... I don't recall reading no one but mechanics could post. All that was stated was to qualify your "expertise" or not pose as a mechanic if you are not one. Makes it easier for us owners to assess the responses and opinions offered.

Did I miss read?

No, you didn't misread. You are 100% correct sir.
The list of user names originally posted are the folks that have consistently and frequently answered questions and shared their expertise with regard to pool tables, cushions, cloth and various other parts and setup of a table. If one of these people answers a question you can be reasonably assured you're getting a good answer.

Nobody is being denied the right to post in Talk to a Mechanic but "bad" answers are unacceptable. Members come here to get the right answers to a problem or question from billiard mechanics that "know" what they're talking about. There's nothing wrong with anyone expressing an opinion when it's stated as such but the line needs to be drawn when folks post and portray themselves as mechanics when they are not.

table mechs

thanks for the listing of qualified table techs. good to know stuff. still i like hearing from diy'ers but agree with your statement that IMHO or im not a mech as a preceder to their reply. i get many responses to my questions and appreciate all who take the time to provide their knowledge. again thanks for the list. gerald

No worries Gerald.
In fact there are members that have gathered a lot of information here and went on to work on their own table with great results. These folks are not mechanics as a day job but they learned from those that do and it's good to see their posts and pics. Biggest problem with forums is figuring out who is who and what's right/wrong when it comes to answers. The mechanic community isn't large here so listing those we know that actually work in the business is one way to help a member feel he is getting a legitimate answer. This is not to say that we all agree with each other without question as each mechanic has their own way of working but the end results are usually the same.

Glen

Hi Glen,
I would love to see you stand up and admit to a mistake once and a while, all mine end up public and I am fine with that. Yes I made a mistake, and Yes I was wrong for rushing a job. Maybe I am a Yes man after all. Do I need you to make a good living...Nope. Down the road I fully plan on having a whole section on my sites to show mistakes I made and learned from. The whole "king of the hill" thing you got going is cute, how is your back these days? If I am still humping slate after 30 years in the business I will get a job cleaning floors or something. Its real easy to be critical of me because I don't hide my faults, what happens as I continue to grow in the industry? I have met several people through this forum that I really respect, yourself included for the most part, what's with the ego...the level of your work doesn't need it.
