Would one of you pro installers please make us a how to "sticky" on recovering 1 piece, and 3 piece tables, and maybe even installing new cushions? I'm sure i'm one of many who would appreciate it. Thanks.

Not a Mechanic

Perhaps you might do a seasrch first. I'm quite certain this topic has been expounded upon a number of times. Just a thought.

Glen made a like 7 or 8 page detailed document on leveling a 3 piece slate. Search thru the archives for it.

But, if you're looking at doing it for home use, you'll likely spend just as much money on the tools needed then you would by hiring a skilled professional to do it, unless of course you already have them...

Which is why I paid a professional. I love to learn all I can about tables, but I don't want to spend a fortune on more tools that I'll only use every 10 years and still not have as good a job done on my table as I'd like :)

Hey partner, I have read the responses to your question and it doesn't look like you are going to get any help here, and like you I thought this is what this forum was for, but I suppose we were both wrong!!!!!

Kinda Sad!!!:(

Well you are right, you are wrong. We answer lots of questions here. But we are not here to give step by step detailed instructions for free. That is a lot of info to try and put into a sticky to cover so many different designs and techniques over the years. Do a search for The Green Book. It has lots of info on recovering tables.

I also just checked the ask the cuemaker section and did not see a sticky on how to build a cue. I thought that was what the forum was for!!

Part of what he asked has already been answered in a very detailed post. I think I have read just about everything he asked in posts on here before.

I think the point the installers are trying to make is, they aren't going to hand out a book that has everything you need to know. BUT, they are more then willing to answer questions and help people who are doing things. I've been following this forum for quite some time, and I'm sure you could actually write a book on how to be a table mechanic from all the info given here. It's just that none of the mechanics are going to spend the time to do so...

I also do disagree with the thought that was posted that giving away the info takes away business. I don't think most of the people looking to DIY it are looking to pay the rates of top mechanics anyways. They are going to do it themselves one way or another. You either have the money to pay someone or you don't. BUT, I do agree that some searching is in order before asking for such a broad question. Before I ask any question on here I do searches to see if it's been asked before, and I may still ask if it has been if I wasn't happy with the answers before or I think my question may be different in some way that could have a different response.

Just my 2 cents... From someone who is learning about tables and feels the best way to learn right now is to watch the mechanic I'm paying to see what he does :)

Brian, I am also forever learning about Table Mechanics. I own a Pool Room and I do most of the work myself, and not because I can't afford to hire a Mechanic. I just prefer to take care of my equipment, because while many have more experience than myself, no one cares about my equipment more than I do. I have always been pretty handy with any kind of work with my hands and I never make the same mistake twice, so while it has been a learning experience, I also enjoy the challenge.

Same with doing cue repair and building Custom Cues, over a five year period I taught myself how to do most any cue repair and from there I started building conversion cues, within the first year of cue building I started building 1 of 1 cues. I have found this section of the forum to be very helpful, and many of the cue makers go out of their way to help a new guy out.

Now my comments above were not directed at everyone who posted to this thread, but for those who do take offense I must have hit the mark, and in the future maybe they need to take a little time and think before they post. These forums at least in my opinion are here to help others and I for one do so when ever I can. The forums are not here for self glorification and a mightier than thou attitude serves no one. Help can be as simple as posting a link to or showing some one how to use the archive to find what they are looking for, and treating others with a little respect may be as simple as not posting at all, I hope everyone can understand what I am trying to say.

You run a pool room and do your own tables so I'm sure you're qualified and have the time to write up detailed recovering directions along with a few dozen illustrative pictures.
