I'm thinking about buying a new set of either the Aramith Super Pro's or the Aramith Tournament balls of Duramith. The Aramith set I have now were purchased used but do have a few small chips in them. What causes these little chips? Molded phenolic balls are pretty hard so how do they occur? Any way to prevent them from occuring with a new set of balls?
 
If you play on a gandy be careful the brads that hold the pocket boots in place do not work their way out a bit. Those can cause dings in the balls.
I have seen it happen a handful of times. When ever I entered a room with gandys I would check the balls to see if they had dings in them. Or if I seen the brads sticking out in the pocket boots I knew the balls would be damaged.

One way it can happen I know of for sure.
 
Check the pockets of the table or tables you are playing on .
Some goons think it's ok to use nails or screws inside the pockets to hold them on.
 
My Aramith Premier balls got a few nicks when my table was in the garage and they landed on the concrete floor. Had some rugs around the table, but didn't cover everything... One of these days I'll buy some new balls...
 
Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Checked the pockets and they appear to be mounted properly with no nails sticking out. Guess I'll need some rugs too.
Just one or two small nicks in a couple of balls, but that bothers me when I rack them and look at them. I'll wait until after the Xmas season. Santa will be putting coal in my stocking instead of Duramith balls.

Just be careful with the rugs, because, if they aren't "sticky" enough on the back, when you lean over the table to make a shot they can sometimes fly out from under you and land your butt on the floor :)
