Dress Code for Gold Crown Billiards, Erie, PA

Let's put away the straw man argument about a tux being required. The dress code allows jeans, chinos, polo shirts, T-shirts, sneakers, sandals, etc.

The dress code's point isn't that people in the listed clothes are automatically degenerates, but that the presence of too much of that kind of clothing will lead to negative inferences about the pool room. Pool already has a horrible image - much of it deserved - so Paul is wise to be proactive.

Paul, thank you for your contribution to pool's image. I wouldn't consider a stop in Erie complete without putting in a couple of hours at your excellent room.
 
I myself would love to play in Paul's hall. If the tables are good, the staff is respectful, and they have a kitchen then I would be there supporting it as many nights a weeks as possible.

Thats funny CC, I quite often see the bangers dressed like this and before and part of their pre shot routine, if they have one, is pulling up their trousers before they lean into the shot.

Unfortunately, I grew up in part of the disco era. Something that I'm actually ashamed of is having to admit that I had serious bell bottom pants and platform shoes, that if you stepped wrong and went sideway, you could twist an ankle no problemo.

I have 2 Harleys and if I had to, I'd glady put on a pair of Dockers and a dress shirt to play at Pauls.
Those table rates are ridiculously low. That would be my bane as I'd probably live there.

I took a few pictures tonight. We show respect for our clientèle in many ways and they reciprocate by adhering to a dress and conduct code. This is just a good way to do business.

Congrats Paul,

Your business model works for you. You do seem to have quite a bit more bar/food clientele than pool players (looking at your photos you provided).

With that said and my congratulations stated I will simply say you get to choose who is allowed in your establishment and I as a customer can simply choose not to frequent your establishment.

And yes we know you turn away customers hand over fist...so odds are you wont miss my money ....so I wont feel bad about not spending it...

I don't think you do get it. I do not get to choose who is allowed in my establishment. As a matter of fact, I want everyone to visit my place: all religions, all races, all genders, all professions, and orientations. I want a melting pot. I only require that patrons adhere to a dress and conduct code.

I do not turn away customers hand over fist although it has happened on a few rare occasions and I don't like it.

There are values that are larger than money. Pool is in my blood. When I opened my room in 1978, I had a vision of making pool accessible to all walks of life through operating a clean and attractive place and by instituting a dress and conduct code. I succeeded and I have been rewarded handsomely with good customers and a place of work that I enjoy.
 
I wouldn't go your place, that's just me. I wear a hat everywhere, to cover up my bald head and keep it warm. Wearing a hat forward and pool doesn't work. If as you say how you dress defines who you are. Most suit and tie guys are the scum of the earth, I'm just a commoner. All those fancy clothes turn things into too much one upmanship. Stocking cap is that what Santa claus wears? What is a wave cap? ski cap it's winter time lol. No satanic T-shirts reminds me of 6th grade school teacher when Ozzy came out. Also read something about if you had bankers come to your place, sounds pretty creepy to me.

Although the dress code reads a bit like an eye chart :D, it must be working.....32 years in the business, a new addition, and 500+ customers is hard to argue with....

IMHO, it's very smart.....you've decided to support a customer base that obviously spends money and helps you avoid an unwanted element, whether that is drugs or fighting or whatever.....in every picture, you see people smiling, and more importantly, they all have a beer and/or food in front of them.....the 30-50 year old set not only spends money, they also don't like to fight or cause trouble....looks like a nice place...

Wow, I could write a book on this one but will constrain myself. First off, I totally agree with his dress code and wish I lived near enough to play there.
Secondly, I agree with some of the posters who say "clothes don't make the man", or "I ride a bike and wear leathers appropriate to that and I am a nice/good person".
There are exceptions to every rule and there is almost always a majority versus a minority. Pool/billiards has always attracted the "somewhat less than desirable" members
of society. ALL of you know what I am referring to so please don't insult our intelligence and try to argue that point.

The percentage of people in this country that "act unacceptably" to the majority of Amercians has risen drastically in the last 40 years. It really took off in the late 60's
with the "flower power generation" of which I am a member. Don't get me wrong, a lot of wrongs were righted and a lot of good was accomplished, but we have let
the pointer go from one slight extreme to the other, extreme extreme, and it's staying there until this country is almost destroyed, and then hopefully it will go back
to the middle. But thats another story.

Here is the bottom line: This man has found a way to accomodate the larger selection of pool players in his area by offering a safe/fun place for them to congregate,
play pool, eat, and socialize without the fear of exposing themselves/friends/kids to things that they consider negative, at the expense of excluding the minority of
people that don't meet his dress code standards but would meet his other standards. AND THAT IS OK. They can go play pool somewhere else.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to eliminate all unfairness. What this country has been doing for the past 40 years is trying to eliminate unfairness for the minority (sometimes just 1 person),
at the expense of common sense, safety, and fairness for the majority. The people excluded from his place are NOT excluded because of their race or religion. They can go
somewhere else if they choose. AND THAT IS OK.

Pretty straight forward. Tap, tap, tap. I wonder if those who feel they should be allowed to visit with their MC outer wear, sleepwear, exercise wear and use vulgar, inappropriate language would attend their house of worship dressed the same way and use the same language? Its still about respect to others, if not yourself!

Nice post Three. So right. I don't agree with ALL the rules but at least 95 percent. It's his place and he has certain values. I rode bikes all my life but was really not what you think of as a biker. They call them one percenters for a reason. Only one percent are affiliated with true biker gangs. Kind of a shame a bunch of doctors and lawyers who play pool could not enter the establishment because of their leathers and boots which are by the way functional not some type of statement! I applaud the man for sticking to his guns. The whole bustin a sag gangster crap makes me want to puke! I wear a ball cap and that's about as wild as I get. Someone posted about the event held in Vegas ( APA BCA ) doesn't matter. They do enforce the dress code and I have seen it happen. Busted several ladies for open toed shoes!!!! Get real! But you have to have these rules or people would wear flip flops. The man said he had 500 people in his place. Hard to believe that. How many tables? How long do you wait? Never seen a pool hall that holds 500 people. Tell me he fat fingered that number!

Glad to see your dress code. In Vegas, most anything goes. Pool Sharks has a sign at the door about any kind of "gang" colors and various headwear. They actually have a doorman (nights) whose job it is to ask the mis-dressed to change or leave. I'm not asking for a return to shirt and tie days but the cloths some young people wear is disgusting. And it's not just the guys. One young Asian lady had a fcuk shirt on last night at the pool room. Am I missing something? Am I just too old to understand? Possibly both?
