Archer's View on Diamond tables

U.S. Open

The year Buddy Hall beat Hatch in the Open Dennis had a ball skid on him near the end of the match, ultimately cost him the championship, and I believe they were playing on a Gold Crown.

pt109 is very true: New set of balls skid more!!! They have still the original polish on them which needs to break down a bit before the balls come into perfect tournament condition. Top world 3cushion player Nick Polychronopoulos my friend verifies from his vast experience to that.
I don't know the exact phrase Mr. Johnny Archer used but he did not make a public statement and observations like that are necessary for the companies to improve their products. Companies support pool not for the love of God but for their own buisness!
Because pool has not taken the place it deserves sports, even az members forget sometimes the value of models like Mr. Johnny Archer..
It's because of people like him that most of us play pool today..
It's because of people like him that guys at companies like Diamond earn a luxurius living today..
Mr. Archer, representative of a great nation's national team at the art of pool deserves the outmost respect at all times, he has never given any rights throughout his career..
That doesn't mean pool champions can do and say whatever they feel like but in this case after a 146 performance-gift to the spectators over there I doubt there was a low motive on his remarks...
Best of wishes to all az members for the new year!!

Awesome!!!

Thanks guys, now I have another excuse to use when I miss an easy cut shot.

"Damn that static electricity!!!"

Main event, my mentor told me Segal said the same thing. If only my mentor would have specified that when the cue ball is near the rail or you are jacked up or shooting a long shot etc then dont bother putting the English on unless imperative for shape then I would have won more money.
Damn advice!

Diamond tables

Negative ion buildup! Or as grandpa said, static electricity! I missed a few shots the other night and now I have a good excuse. During the dust bowl cars and farm equip. Would buildup crazy amounts of static from constantly being bombarded by sand. Knocked people on their keister! It would seem to be an easy fix by controlling the surface where feet slide. I worked around grain elevators all my life and static elec. Is taken very seriously. The whole dry/wet table scenario would seem to favor the wet table having less static buildup. If static were really the culprit wouldn't players get shocked occasionally? Off thread, but most league/bar players love Diamonds because they are far superior to any bar table they ever played on. I love GC's and many great players speak very highly of them. That is a huge statement by some of the greatest players! Now I know that Diamond must have some engineers/experts/consultants that must have done some serious research while designing their tables. They dropped the ball. Why would you engineer a table that banks short. It physics pure and simple. We spend our whole lives learning how to bank and they make a table that banks like no other! Very strange. Or are they saying all other tables bank wrong and theirs is the true bank? They make a marvelous table compared to really sad bar tables, which is like me saying I am a great player compared to people who play lousy!

My understanding is that skidding occurs usually because some foreign substance (chalk, dirt, etc.) at the point of contact of the two balls causes the two balls to "lock up" so to speak. This usually results in a shot that appears to have been hit too full.

If it happens on Diamonds more often the other tables, particularly GC's, I'm thinking perhaps the reason is the marks put on the balls by the dyed leather pockets.

Good point, this is the only theory that would make any sense to me at all.

Does anyone recall John Schmidt complaining about skids when playing on these tables?

Seems like he has run 200 plus on these tables at least 20x, if they were this bad and it was static electricity, how did he not get in trouble much more often?

I still think it is mainly dirt on the balls. JS makes sure he cleans them often.

Snooker players do seem to complain that they get many more "kicks" than before. I'm not sure if they think its due to different cloth or if the balls are different now. Skids in snooker seem to be a different variety- many times the ball hops up in the air a bit. Pool balls seem to cling and slide more than jump. Weight difference of course between the two...strange after all this time no one seems to know for sure the cause of these events.

Skidding on diamonds

The oil on our skin and the marks that the pockets are said to be putting on the balls are to blame. Imo

if the diamond pockets do in fact put more marks on the balls, then johnny is partially correct.

Doubt that match was on a gold crown!

I could be wrong but a similar remark. Cost the men's pro tour years ago the support of the other big name table maker. And I beleive that they never sponsored another men's event since.

Wondering if Glen will chime in here?? Maybe he's on the road.

Also wondering if Diamond is considering changing their pocket design?

Everyone I know who has a Diamond table complains about the pockets.

I was watching the 2010 DCC 14.1 challenge tonight and specifically Johnny Archers 146 ball run. What ended the run appeared to be a ball skidding, which resulted in him missing a shot in the side pocket. After this, he starting talking about the shot.... then says "thats why these are the worst tables ever built" and goes on to say something about Gold Crowns that I was unable to hear. This is the first time I've ever heard a top pro dog Diamond like that. Just thought I would share.

Archer must have changed his tune or likes the way the "new" diamonds play because he has been wearing a diamond sponsor patch on his shirt at a lot of recent events this year:thumbup:

First of all, let me say that statement would be more valuable if Johnny had made it instead of you.

As far as sharing goes...as you like to put it, then why don't you SHARE the fact that Johnny Archer....HAS in fact...a Diamond 9ft ProAm in his pool room!...or DIDN'T you know about that?;)

Are you even aware of the fact...that I redesigned the playing conditions of the rails on all Diamond tables?...or are you just interested in trying to stir the pot here on AZ?

Since the US Open...have you heard one negative comment about Diamond tables....since you like to share/report..what Johnny has to say about Diamond tables?

Here's a little thought for all of you who think Diamonds skid more than any other tables out here. First of all, all things being equal on Gold Crowns vs Diamond tables, same cloth and all...then ask yourselves what's different between the tables! Hmmmm....MAYBE we should take a look at the balls...COULD there be a major difference between the Brunswick Centennial balls used on a Gold Crown vs the Super Aramith Pro balls used on the Diamond's? YES...there is, the finish don't last on the Super Aramith Pro balls, which in turn with the loss of the finish, the friction factor increases...which in turn, causes cling/hold/ball hop...what ever you want to call it....it even causes balls to hopp off the rails...and play boingy off the cushions....often blamed on the TABLE!!!

So, I say to you....get your damn facts straight....go ask Johnny Archer....if he even knows who you are...what he thinks about Diamond tables...paticularly...the DIAMOND PROAM in his pool room!!!

You..."overheard"....Johnny....and took that to be FACT reporting...a year later?????

Corey Deuel said on a TAR DVD that skids are caused as the result of static electricity between the balls. He said there was some test done by a European group with that finding; also, during the test they used clean balls with no chalk, etc. on them.

Don't know if it is true, but it would be interesting to find out.

I am not buying this one. Has anyone in life ever seen a static charge come from any billiard ball they have every played? NO
Billiard balls are made from a phenolic resin I believe. Phenolic resin would be an insulator not a conductor.
I guess it's possible for moisture, dirt, or chalk on the outside of the ball to pick up some static electricity but there again you are getting back to humidity, dirty balls, dirty table conditions which is what all most everyone believes what causes skids to happen and I did not need a European group to figure that one out.

COULD there be a major difference between the Brunswick Centennial balls used on a Gold Crown vs the Super Aramith Pro balls used on the Diamond's? YES...there is, the finish don't last on the Super Aramith Pro balls

So, would you recommend using Centennial balls over Super Aramith Pro? Do the new Aramith Tournament balls have the same issue? Asking, because a new set of balls is on my list of future purchases :)

I love G.Cs and can't stand the way Diamonds play. But i'm old as dirt. l.o.l.
"country" Bob

I bet you thought this was an opinion poll too:p Have you played on a new Diamond lately?...better not, or you might just be throwing that old GC of yours away for a New Diamond...you DO have a table at home don't you?;)
