Sheer brilliance

Playing a scratch 9 ball tournament, loser breaks, I was in 4th place and didnt know.. just kept playing. I play a brutal safety on my opponent. He kicks and misses. I take ball in hand and set up where I have to stop the cue ball making sure I get perfect. I shoot the 6 ball with perfect draw speed and land perfect on the 4 at the other end of the table with my tap shot run out completely set up.

Everyones staring and someone says "you just shot the 6 ball". I have no rational explanation for why I shot the 6 first.. I cant seem to figure out what was going on in my head. I've never in my life just taken ball in hand and shot the wrong ball to get shape on the ball I needed to start with.

I of course lost and finished in 4th while everyone including myself were completely stunned. Had I started with the 4 like I had to.. the rack would've been easier than starting with the 6. I've been cashing in every tournament I've played lately, playing very well, and then I do something so ridiculous as this.. just brilliant enough to share. Have fun.

reminds me..

...of the time I played in an 8-ball league with 4 other team members; I broke and ran the balls and set up perfect on the 8, and after making the 8, the other team is jumping up and down 'cause I overlooked one of my balls....of course the other guy then ran out, and I lost the game....none of my teammates said a word before I mistakenly shot the 8 ball in....guess they weren't paying much attention.....

Just a thought - was the 6 your trouble ball in the layout ? Maybe you were focused on getting the BIH so you could take it out.

Over the years I have ignored the 7 ball probably 6 or 7 times

Why would the other guy have to run out after you made the 8? Even in backwoods bar rules if you make the 8 out of turn you loose the game right there.

I've done it. My opponent scratched on the break one time, and I took BIH and lined up for a shot on the 2. For some reason I thought my opponent had made the 1 on the break, but he hadn't.

So I'm lining up to shoot the 2 ball when a friend of mine in the stands gives it the *cough* "1 ball" *ahem* deal. I hear him and suddenly realize that the 1 is still on the table, so I reposition the cueball to shoot the 1.

Meanwhile, my opponent is furious. I don't remember if he said anything, but I'm sure if he could have reached my friend at that point he would have clocked him in the head with his cue.

Almost everyday that I'm practicng 9 ball, don't know if it's because my focus isn't there or I'm more worried about position..Strangely enough thou,I never do it while running 15 ball,go figure..

This is a good point, I have done this before more times than I care to admit. You focus so much on what you deem important and miss the obvious. Don't beat yourself up too much, I think this sort of thing happens to all of us.

Sometimes we just go brain-dead! Not positive, but I think it was Rempe, many years ago. He was in a tournament, had everything he had bet on himself for the calcutta, which was around $20,000 in it. His opponent scratches, the ref comes over and retrieves the cb and places it on the table. Rempe shoots from where the ref put it, and he was hooked! He did make the ball, and ran out for the win. But, just goes to show, even the very top players can do something stupid once in a while too!

Great story Neil!!

Good, I am not alone!! I have skipped a ball playing 8 ball, shot the wrong group, more than once.

Just the other night playing the wife in 8-Ball I was focused on the 8, and shot at it with one ball left on the table, luckily I missed! Still won the game! :)

And I have many times in APA 8ball forgotten that it's not an open table if you sink only solids or only stripes on the break and went for the wrong group as they had better shape...

I saw a great player one approach the table and stroke the object ball instead of the cue ball. Everyone watching was stunned! The player blamed it on some medicine he was on. Mental lapses happen to us all!

The six is green, yes. It seems to blend in on occasion and I skip right past it and shoot the seven.

uh huh

You're right....my memory failed me....I just remember losing the game....

I've also done it multiple times. I've shot the wrong side in 8 ball and shot the wrong ball in 9 ball. This only happens when I am over focused on some particular ball or on my shot routine. I am usually shooting pretty well when this happens and just lose track of what is going on in the larger picture.

I have one friend I practice with more often than anyone else. He has never done it and he can't believe that I have done this about 5 times. He watches me line up on the wrong ball and doesn't say anything until after the shot hoping that it will teach me a lesson and I won't do it again. Still somehow a few months later I do it again.

I also did it once in a 9 ball tournament and it shook me up and I played like crap after that, plus I was totally embarrassed.

I hope this won't happen anymore because I have now gotten so mad at myself about it I have vowed to pay more attention to what balls are on the table as part of my routine. It's been a few months now since I last did it and I do hope it never happens again because I don't know anyone who has done this more than me. Argh.
