I saw on Onepocket.org and I have seen mention of the Louis Robert's Award. I wonder when the great game of pool took its plunge of no class. I was having a discussion of the Derby City tournament and I remarked that it has really gone downhill.
I remember a few years ago watching "Weenie Beanie" making a game of one-pocket. There was no woofing, no screaming, and just two guys quietly and easily making a game and then setting off to play. Each payed after each game, discretely putting the bet in a pocket, the winner of the game discretely pocketing it as the balls were racked for the next game. The players both played great and treated the game with the respect it deserves.
It appears to me when I go to DCC and the "Action Room", there isn’t great pool but appears to be woofing contests between a bunch of people who I am guessing don’t have two nickels to rub together. What makes it even worse, is for those people that think that this is what real pool players do. I wish they could see the players who actually want to gamble and not put on a stage performance.
Buddy Hall was talking about it here the other day, calling it a lot of "Who shot John" instead of pool. I have seen our own Chris Bartram, and I admit he has always shown some class when I have seen him try to make a game.
My friend here suggested that bar table pool ruined the game, maybe he is right, but I just hope when the award is given it is given to someone that in gambling and not making a woofest stage performance.
